If you read it simply as an individual lament over sickness and trouble, then you will struggle over how to sing it. After all, few of us have enemies who would rejoice over our death. And -hopefully- few of us are wishing that God would raise us up, so that we can repay our enemies for their malicious betrayals-----If you read Psalm 41 as a generic individual lament, then Psalm 41 is a mean and nasty song that Christians simply shouldn-t sing.----But here is the problem. Jesus said that Psalm 41 is about himself and Judas. That line about -my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me- - Jesus says in John 13 that this scripture was fulfilled by Judas.

Overview: Psalm 36 opens -Of David, the servant of the LORD.-----This exact title is given to only three people in the Old Testament- --Moses, Joshua, and David. -God refers to a few others as -my servant- - like Job, Isaiah, Nebuchadnezzar- He also speaks from time to time of Israel or of the prophets as -my servants------But very few people are named directly as -the servant of the LORD.-----Psalm 36 is a song of the servant of the LORD. Psalm 36 opens with an oracle regarding the wicked. The problem with the wicked is that -there is no fear of God before his eyes.- The song then turns to give praise to God for his steadfast love - and concludes by praying that God will continue his steadfast love to his people.

But you have failed. And so God says that he will raise up a righteous Branch for the house of David who will be what he expects of a king.----Our catechism summarizes this by saying-----Q. 26. How does Christ execute the office of a king---A. Christ executes the office of a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.----Jeremiah-s language states this------he shall reign as king and deal wisely- -he will rule us------he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land- -he will defend us------in his days Judah will be saved- -he will subdue us to himself------and Israel will dwell securely- -he will restrain and conquer all his and our enemies-.

Overview: And there are lots of potential puzzles in Psalm 37. The Psalmist says that he has never seen the children of the righteous begging for bread.----Seriously- Maybe the Psalmist just didn-t get out very much- It kind of sounds like he is saying that if someone is begging they must be wicked - or at least his parents must be wicked - after all, if the children of the righteous never beg - then what does that say about beggars and their parents---Job-s friends seem to have thought that way.----And Jesus was once asked, -Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind.- Jesus answered -Neither------It might sound like Jesus is rejecting the logic of Psalm 37- But then we face this title again- -Of David.- And we realize that David is singing this song to Israel. King Jesus sings this song to us.----He is describing his kingdom. He is describing the way things should be - and indeed the way things will be. This is what his kingdom looks like. Do you want a world in which no children are begging for bread- Then live this way.
