Overview: What-s missing- Did you notice- There is no title for Psalm 33. All of the Psalms in book 1 have a title - except Psalms 1, 2, 10, and 33.-------All of the surrounding Psalms are Psalms of David. All of the surrounding Psalms call us to sing them in and with David. Psalm 33 does not.----Then again, look at the content of Psalm 33. There is no -first person singular- speaker. Most of the Psalms that we have been singing recently -distinguish between -I- -the king- and -we- -the people-. Psalm 33 does not. There is a king in Psalm 33 -verse 16-, but he is a passive figure who cannot be saved by a great army.----And yet, while there is that difference, Psalm 33 connects closely with the themes of this section of the Psalter.----32-11 had closed with an appeal for the righteous to be glad and rejoice and shout for joy. Psalm 33 opens with an appeal to the same people to do the same thing. Psalm 34 is a song of thanksgiving for deliverance - precisely what the conclusion of Psalm 33 asks for.----Indeed, one could imagine that Psalm 33 was placed here in order to connect Psalms 32 and 34...

Overview: It has been our practice to read Lukeas story of the incarnation during Advent. Psalm 35 is a fitting place to begin our Advent series since Psalm 35 is a song for the hated King. I title it this because Jesus himself says that Psalm 35 is about him.----Jesus quotes verse 19 in John 15-25 a -they hated me without cause- as he tells his disciples that the world will hate you as well. He calls you to sing this song with him.----Hereas how Jesus says it-----aIf the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own- but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. ----aRemember the word that I said to you- aA servant is not greater than his master.a If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. ----aWhoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, -but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. Overview: If it weren-t for Psalm 110, Genesis 14 - the story of Abraham and Melchizedek - might have stood simply as a somewhat strange episode in the life of Abraham.----After all, Melchizedek, king of Salem, disappears from the scene as quickly as he appeared, and there is no further trace of him until you get to Psalm 110.----Psalm 110 speaks of the kingly rule of the Son of David. But Psalm 110 also speaks of a priest - but a priest not of the line of Aaron - rather, a priest after the order of Melchizedek, and Melchizedek was both King of Salem and a priest of God Most High. David saw with the eyes of faith, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, that Melchizedek prefigured something in the future of his own line.----This obscure event in the life of Abraham reveals God-s plan for the salvation of the human race. There must be a priestly king who never dies.----Q. 25. How does Christ execute the office of a priest-----A. Overview: Psalm 29 follows the path of a thunderstorm from Lebanon in the north -to the wilderness of Kadesh in the south, and then realizes that that is the answer-----Have you ever thought that the solution to your problems is found in the path of a thunderstorm- Probably not-----We live in an age of barren, sterile interpretation. We don-t see the connections between scripture, nature, and history - because we think that each of these subjects has their own interpretive method. We interpret nature by means of careful scientific investigation. We interpret history by means of careful study into what people said and did. We interpret scripture by means of grammatical-historical analysis.----And we have carefully sealed off any overlap. One of the reasons why I really enjoy reading the early church fathers is because they lived in a world where they expected overlap- They interpreted nature, history, and scripture all together.----Psalm 29 invites us to reconnect the broken fragments of our lives. When you hear the Voice of the LORD in the thunder you will never experience -nature- the same again- When you hear the Voice of the LORD shaking the wilderness you will never think of history the same again - because the Voice of the LORD - the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us - has opened your ears so that you might hear the scriptures afresh-

Overview: We need to see Psalm 26 as the Song of the Innocent One - our Lord Jesus. He is the David who has walked in his integrity and who has passed the test and entered into the Holy of Holies.----But we cannot stop there. If we stop there, if we never learn to sing Psalm 26 for ourselves, then we will never enter the Holy of Holies.----What are all these Psalms doing- How do they fit together- They are teaching us - better yet - they are showing us how discipleship prepares us for worship.----Discipleship prepares us for worship. As we walk in a certain path - as we develop habits and patterns in a certain direction - we are orienting ourselves toward a certain goal - we are learning to love. In Psalm 26 we learn how to love - to follow the path of our Lord Jesus - so that we, too, might love the place where his glory dwells.
