Overview: -Sung Psalm- 100-----Last week, we talked about the task of the pastor - both in teaching sound doctrine, and in discipline - rebuking those who contradict sound doctrine.----I mentioned last week the distinction between the wolf and the big, ugly sheep. The wolf is the false teacher who must be silenced -or else he will devour the flock-. The big, ugly sheep is the Christian who is causing trouble - but is still one of Christ-s sheep.----When the shepherds fail - when false teachers creep in and scatter the flock - then the flock ends up without discipline, beating up on each other.----Think about what happens in a home where the parents are not shepherding their children. The children wind up butting into each other. This is true in any community. When those in authority misuse their authority for their own selfish gain, the result is that the community turns chaotic. When the shepherds are primarily focused on feeding themselves, the sheep will mistreat one another.----Notice what God says to Ezekiel- -I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them- he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD. I have spoken.- -34-23-24-----Jesus is the good shepherd. Jesus takes into his own mouth - in John chapter 10 - the language of Ezekiel 34. -I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.- The good shepherd searches for the strays and brings them home. The good shepherd binds up the weak and the frail. The good shepherd leads his sheep in green pastures - beside still waters.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 80-----The word -elder- can mean several different things -this is true in English - as well as Hebrew and Greek-.----First, -Elder- can refer to the older men in the community. For instance, Exodus 3 tells us that Moses was sent to the elders of Israel. Every community has elders - those older people who are respected and wise.----Second, -Elder- can refer to an office - a formal position within the community. Exodus 18 provides us with the foundation for the office of elder. These elders are more like -town fathers- - judges - or magistrates. They are to decide civil cases as well as religious cases. In the OT - and even when talking about Jewish elders in the NT - these men will be referred to as -elders of the people.-----Third, -Elder- can refer to a particularly religious office connected with preaching. We see the beginnings of this in Numbers 11-16-30. The LORD takes these 70 - and gives them some of the Spirit that was on Moses - so that that they might prophesy. In one sense, this episode reveals the problem with the old covenant. They prophesied - but they did not continue doing it. Old Testament elders are not prophets.----And so Moses says, -Would that all the LORD-s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them-- -v29- At Pentecost, that is exactly what Jesus will do. -He puts his Spirit upon all of God-s people - so that all of God-s people become prophets.----But it is important for us to distinguish between these three uses of the term -elder.- -Elder- can refer simply to an older man. -Elder- can refer to a ruler in the community. Or -Elder- can refer to a ruler who also preaches...

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 96-----In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul makes reference to a man who was caught up to paradise - to the third heaven.----To understand what Paul is doing here, we need to pay attention to the biblical picture of the world.----If you are on earth, then you look up and you see the great blue dome - you see the -heavenly- ceiling of the earth.----But what do you see if you are in heaven- The -heaven of heavens- refers to the ceiling of God-s heavenly dwelling place. In the same way that the earth is bounded by the heavens, the heavens are bounded by the -heaven of heavens.-----So what is the -third heaven-- The third heaven is dwelling place of God himself. The third heaven - paradise - is where God dwells in unapproachable light. This is the heavenly holy of holies.----This is where John went in Revelation 4-1, when he was called to -come up here- - and he found himself standing before a throne in heaven.----Before the throne was a sea of glass, like crystal.----Now, if you are on earth looking up, what do you see- The heavens, spread out like a dome of crystal. If you were in the heavens looking down, what would you see- A sea of glass, like crystal-----Now, nobody ever thought that God literally lived on the top of a crystal dome right up there- Remember what Solomon said- -Heaven of heavens cannot contain you - how much less this house that I have built------But the blue dome above your heads is the sea of crystal that John speaks of. It was designed by God as a picture of his heavenly dwelling place.

I will repay.------But there also comes a point when you are grieved to the heart at the slaughter and bloodshed, -and you just cry out,-----Ah, sword of the LORD--- How long till you are quiet---Put yourself into your scabbard--- rest and be still------Jeremiah is speaking about the Philistines. Now, it-s important to recognize that Jeremiah is not actually speaking to the nations. He is still speaking to the church - to the people of God.----But he is speaking to the people of God about the nations. How should we think about the political world around us- How should we think about the powers of this age-
