  • Skills Forward DETROIT: City-Focused Talent Academy from Penn Foster
Chris Holman talks with Ron J. Stefanski, Managing Director, Corporate Education of Penn Foster about Skills Forward DETROIT: City-Focused Talent Academy.
Penn Foster is a social impact organization focused primarily on up skilling frontline workers through a deep portfolio of innovative skills and credential programs. Their workforce training programs are delivered online at scale, and supported by over 500 success coaches, certified instructors and mentors as part of our “surround sound” service. They will be launching the Detroit Online Skills Academy later this spring and believe there is significant opportunity to expand access to these programs through a community focused strategy in Detroit, Michigan with public and private enterprises.
    Detroit Online Skills Academy
Penn Foster wants to lead the effort around upskilling in Detroit and support the city’s traditionally underserved communities (both opportunity youth and underemployed adults) with their Detroit Online Skills Academy. The Academy aims to provide these communities with workforce and educational opportunities across in-demand fields that foster wage gains and improve job placements.
The arrival of Ford Motor Company, and Linked In to Detroit along with the growing success of Quicken Loans, Little Caesars Arena, and countless small entrepreneurial businesses moving to Detroit underscore a deep belief among many that Detroit has the local talent to succeed. Penn Foster wants to drive the conversation about how to mobilize innovative private and public sector partners to build even greater awareness and adoption through coordinated outreach including Penn Foster and partner curated events, and featuring Skills Forward Roadtrip: Detroit in partnership with Roadtrip Nation.

  • MiCareerQuest Event Comes to Capital Area April 26th | Capital Area Michigan Works!
Chris Holman welcomes Edythe Copeland CEO of Capital Area Michigan Works! to talk about some exciting news on the Michigan Business Beat. In partnership with T3: Teach. Talent. Thrive, Capital Area Michigan Works! and a host of regional partners, MiCareerQuest Capital Area is bringing 5,000 capital area student together for hands-on career exploration. The event is scheduled for April 26 at the Lansing Center. An estimated 37.5 million baby boomers will retire in the next decade, yet only 21 million workers will enter the workforce to replace them.
This event will give businesses in the capital area a significant way to help fill these impending workforce shortages. MiCareerQuest is not your typical career fair, though; in fact, it’s not a career fair at all. It’s a hands-on career exploration event for middle and high school students. During this unique experience, students will find out what it’s like to be a nuclear machinist, mechanical engineer, agri-scientist, network technician and more by interacting with professionals who do these jobs every day here in the capital region. Exhibits will engage employers and students in activities designed to expose students to a variety of occupations and career pathways available in the region and around the world.
Another feature that sets MiCareerQuest Capital Area apart from other job or career fairs is its focus on new economy industries as opposed to individual employers and organizations. One representative from a small business can work with dozens of people from a multinational corporation to ensure students learn how to get the jobs our region has to offer. This is a unique opportunity for businesses to take part in building talent in our region while also giving our children exposure to career exploration, directly connecting them with local businesses. If children are exposed to jobs and opportunities in our community at a young age, there is a better chance they will stay here and positively contribute to our region.
MiCareerQuest Capital Area is the fourth MiCareerQuest event in the state. If cities such as Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo can do this for their kids, we can do it for ours because greater Lansing’s kids deserve this kind of exposure.
