The Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, the Catholic Bishops Conference, the Christian Council, and the Ghana Journalists Association are urging President Akufo-Addo to impose a ban on illegal mining.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued an ultimatum to government, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of September 2024 if a total ban on illegal mining aka “galamsey,” is not imposed. In a strongly worded statement, UTAG criticised state-led efforts to combat illegal mining, or “galamsey,” describing them as “failed and corruption-infested militarized battles.”

Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has filed his nomination for the presidential election. On Monday, September 9, Dr Bawumia, accompanied by his wife, his running mate, the Chief of Staff, and others, submitted his nomination at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Bernard Mornah has won the flagbearer race for the People's National Convention (PNC).He was announced the winner by the Electoral Commission officials at the UDS Guest House in Accra on September 7, 2024.He garnered 1,138 votes, defeating his challenger, David Apasera, who managed to secure 216 votes.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential campaign is facing criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority in Parliament for using the Foreign Affairs Ministry to send invitations to diplomats for a meeting. Although the Bawumia campaign requested a meeting with resident diplomats in Ghana, the invitation was issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
