On February 24, 1978, five young men from Yuba City, California- Jackie Huett, Bill Sterling, Jack Madruga, Ted Weiher, and Gary Mathias—drove north to watch a college basketball game. They had every reason to come straight home. Their Special Olympics tournament uniforms were laid out for the next morning. They were last seen at a convenience store buying snacks for the drive back down the valley.

They never made it home.

Four days later, Jack Madruga's Mercury Montego was found abandoned deep in the frozen high country of the Plumas National Forest, seventy miles in the wrong direction. The car was unlocked, undamaged, and had plenty of gas. What followed over the spring thaw would become one of the most chilling, illogical cold cases in American history.
