Midnight in Kentucky

Second only to the state of Alaska in navigable waterways, the Bluegrass state’s intimate connection with it’s lakes, streams, and rivers is well documented. From legends of exploration by historic figures like Daniel Boone and Abraham Lincoln, to the seasonal tourism brought to Kentucky in more modern times, water is as important to the Commonwealth as horse racing or bourbon. As we have discussed several times on MIK, running water seems to be a major factor in many paranormal encounters and supernatural experiences, and attractor of different types of phenomena. While dogmen stalk the banks of the Land Between the Lakes and Mothman beats its wings along the surface of the Ohio river, what unknown entities and unfathomable creatures lurk in the depths of Kentucky’s waters? Come along as we plunge the murky bluegrass waters in search of the monsters that may call them home. From Herry, the Herrington Lake Monster, a supposed pig-eel creature, and the Lake Linville Monster, described by some witnesses as a large black slug released into the lake by machine-gun toting G-men, to a Nessie-like serpent said to make the Ohio river near Henderson, Kentucky it’s home, and unnaturally gigantic specimens of Catfish and Alligator Gar, we’ve drug the waters in search of them all! Something deadly walks the Norfolk Southern Railway Trestle. Just outside the Highlands in Louisville, Kentucky, in an small area known as Popelick, named for the creek that runs under the old train bridge, a monster supposedly makes it’s home in the crags and crevices of the railway trestle. Though never rightfully sighted or documented, the legend of the creature claims a body count so high that official numbers remain unreleased. Just six months, three days, and 1200 miles removed from the infamous UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico, on January 7th, 1948, something tragic happened in the skies over Franklin County, Kentucky, that would change the face of UFOlogy forever. At 2:30 in the afternoon, After repeated and coinciding reports around the region of a massive, white, circular object overhead, Twenty five year old Kentucky air national guardsman, Thomas F. Mantell, was dispatched to observe the unknown craft and report back to Godman Army Airfield, at Fort Knox. Around 3:15, Captain Mantell’s P-15 Mustang would come crashing down, into the Franklin County bluegrass below, ending the pilot’s life. What happened over the course of less than an hour on that January day, early in 1948, would redefine the golden age of the flying saucer phenomena and introduce a terrifying element of danger into the mystery that had come before. Tonight, on our first episode of 2021, and in commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the unexplained and tragic death of Captain Mantell, we examine the series of events that led up to the crash, as well as the possible cover-up that began even before Mantell’s P-51 hit the ground.
