Midnight Local

In this episode we talk about the best space thriller of all time. This is the second Ridley Scott film we have discussed - go back and check out our episode on Blade Runner - so we spend some time talking about other directors who have made their mark and if the position of the director has changed. Also we discuss how Dan O'Bannon creates the most terrifying creatures of all time!

Is the Matrix as awesome as we thought it was in 1999. There is no question that bullet time made it’s mark on filmmaking but is that the best thing the Matrix left us with? This week we are talking about this and much more.

We are talking about Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure this week, Tim Burton’s feature debut. We also dive into the miss information surrounding Paul Reubens and how his signature alter ego came to be. This comedian and the world he created will be very missed.

We watched the Netflix doc Muscles and Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators and it brought us back to the golden age of weird fever dream TV. We are talking about Sifl and Olly, Cutlery Corner, UHF and all the other content that was filling time slots in the early days of late night television and cable. Let us know if you agree that the world needs more weird shit on TV again?

After watching the 1989 Batman we thought there was a lot more to talk about, especially when it comes to different versions of the Joker. This week we decided to take a look at The Dark Knight and see how Christopher Nolan's Batman compares to Burton's and how Heath Ledger's Joker compares to Jack Nicholson's. Both are great but is one better than the other?

Disney has always reused old IP to make more money, so the “live action” remakes are nothing new, but do they hold up to the originals? In this episode we compare the animated and live action Little Mermaids.

Movies are wonderful but there is a lot of fantastic Television out there as well. This episode started out about Columbo and Poker Face (which is heavily inspired by Columbo) but turned into a love letter to Natasha Lyonne and Peter Faulk.

This unexpected Oscar winner really holds up! We debate if there is a victim or a villain or if the main characters of this film all deserved what they got. What is for sure is that the all star cast and crew created a perfect storm for a silly movie that gives your more than you bargain for.

Did Paul Verhoeven have a time machine or is he a wizard? We watched Total Recall, another of his sci fi action films that has remained shockingly relevant well over 30 year past it's release. This film has some of the most memorable special effects of the time and holds up in ways that seem impossible.
