US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on June 4 to block citizens of 12 countries, mostly in the Middle East and Africa, from entering the US.
The ban, due to take effect on June 9, is the latest step in Trump’s sweeping immigration agenda. Since taking office in January, he has cracked down on undocumented migration, ramped up deportations and restarted construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border that he initiated during his first presidential term. He is also seeking to end automatic US citizenship for children born in the country to parents who are there unlawfully.
Trump issued a similar ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries in 2017 during his first term in office. He said the latest ban would protect the nation from foreign terrorism and public safety threats, enforce US immigration laws and advance American foreign policy interests.
