Justice Department officials will meet with Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned girlfriend of financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

That's according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person tells The Associated Press the meeting is Thursday in Florida, where Maxwell is being held. The meeting is part of a Justice Department effort to cast itself as transparent following backlash from parts of

President Donald Trump’s base over an earlier refusal to release additional Epstein records.

A lawyer for Maxwell says she'll "always testify truthfully.” Maxwell was convicted of helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 awaiting trial.

Anyone firing up the grill this summer already knows hamburgers and steaks are expensive, but the latest numbers show prices have climbed to record highs. And experts say consumers shouldn’t expect much relief soon either.

According to U.S. government data, the average price of a pound of ground beef rose to $6.12 in June, up nearly 12% from a year ago.

The average price of all uncooked beef steaks rose 8% to $11.49 per pound. But this is not a recent phenomenon. Beef prices have been steadily rising over the past 20 years because the supply of cattle remains tight while beef remains popular. That's not likely to change.

In fact, the U.S. cattle herd has been steadily shrinking for decades. As of Jan. 1, the U.S. had 86.7 million cattle and calves, down 8% from the most recent peak in 2019. That is the lowest number of cattle since 1951, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Many factors including drought and cattle prices have contributed to that decline.

Stew Leonard Jr., owner of eight grocery stores in the New York City area, says the increased prices for beef has not led to a decline in shoppers buying beef at his stores.

Mounted on slow-moving, homemade tractors laden with possessions, a stream of Cambodian villagers and their families fled through the darkness on Thursday night, seeking safety after long-simmering tensions erupted in a day of deadly fighting between Cambodian and Thai forces.

Clashes took place in at least six disputed areas along the border, according to the Thai Defense Ministry.

The two sides traded artillery, gun and rocketfire and Thai fighter planes carried out airstrikes.

At least 14 Thais have been killed, most of them civilians, according to the Thai health ministry.

There’s no information yet about casualties on the Cambodian side.

The displaced villagers set up an encampment about 30km from the border, near the town of Samrong in Oddar Meanchey province.

They rigged up tents and deployed hammocks and mosquito nets.

Tep Savouen, a 45 year old mother of four children, recounted the events of the morning that forced her to flee.

“It was about 8 o’clock this morning. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise. My son told me it might be thunder and I thought, “is it thunder or is it loud, more like a gun?” At that time I was very scared,” she said.

It’s not clear how long they will have to remain, with little sign yet of either side backing down.

The Southeast Asian neighbors have longstanding border disputes that periodically flare along their 800-kilometer (500-mile) frontier and usually result in brief confrontations that sometimes involves exchanges of gunfire.

But relations have deteriorated sharply since a confrontation in May that killed a Cambodian soldier, and Thursday's clashes were far bigger in scale and intensity than usual.

A replica Oval Office on display near the White House has been made over to look exactly like President Donald Trump’s office.

But it isn’t the gilded version that the Republican is currently using.

Not yet. Instead, it's a mirror image of the Oval from Trump's first term. The replica initially looked like Democrat Joe Biden’s office when the White House Historical Association opened “The People’s House" educational center last fall.

“Just like the White House itself, our Oval Office is a living space, so it changes and evolves as the actual Oval Office changes,” Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association, said Wednesday as he led The Associated Press on a tour of the space as it was being revamped.

It takes time to get copies made of every item in the real Oval. It will be fully revamped next year to mirror Trump's second-term office.

STORYLINE:

Both Republican and Democratic Senators agree that the Epstein files should be released even if President Donald Trump is directly named in them.

On Wednesday a House subcommittee voted to subpoena the Department of Justice for files in the sex trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and now the Senate is considering following suit.

"There should definitely be a subpoena for those files in the Senate as well as in the House," said Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut.

"The fact that (Trump) was informed and the decision was made to refuse to release the files smacks of a cover-up," Blumenthal added.

Democrats cheered the action as proof that their push for disclosures in the Epstein investigation was growing stronger. The committee agreed to redact information on victims, yet Democrats successfully blocked a push by Republicans to only subpoena information that was deemed to be “credible” — language that Trump has also used when discussing what he would support releasing.

"Just put everything out, make it as transparent as you can, protect victims," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina.

Democratic leaders are hoping to make the issue about much more than just Epstein, who died in his New York jail cell six years ago while he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges.
