STORYLINE:

The brother of late NFL star-turned-soldier Pat Tillman will undergo a mental competency test before his trial on arson and vandalism charges, a judge ordered Wednesday.

Richard Tillman, 44, of San Jose was arrested after he allegedly rammed a car into a post office in a San Jose, California, strip mall around 3 a.m. Sunday. The car was then set on fire inside the building, which went up in flames, San Jose police said.

No injuries were reported.

During his arraignment Wednesday, his attorney raised doubts about Tillman's ability to stand trial.

The judge ordered a competency test and set bail at $135,000.

Tillman, with a long beard and shoulder-length hair and his hands in handcuffs, waved at television cameras as he entered the courtroom.

He told the judge he didn’t want his court-appointed defense attorney, calling him “incompetent.”

He also said he didn't want to be released on bail.

Tillman was booked on suspicion of arson and vandalism.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Dominican citizens protested on Wednesday in front of Santo Domingo's National Congress in opposition to what they say is a plan that seeks to regularize foreigners which the government intends to implement.

Speaking in May, the country's minister for work said he was working with the construction industry on a plan to regularize foreigners, the majority of them from neighbouring Haiti.

The demonstration was organized by a right-wing group called “La Antigua Orden Dominicana” (The Ancient Dominican Order).

The ultra-nationalist organization claims that the government is under pressure from the business sector, which has been affected by mass deportations of undocumented Haitians, as they rely heavily on Haitian labour, mainly in the agricultural and construction industries.

The Dominican government announced last year that it would deport up to 10,000 Haitians per week, citing an “excess” of immigrants.

Dominican officials argue that Haitian immigrants have overburdened the country’s public services, with more than 80,000 new Haitian students enrolled in public schools in the past four years. Health officials say Haitian women account for up to 70% of births in the country, costing the government millions of dollars.

According to official statistics, half a million Haitians live in the Dominican Republic which has a population of 11 million people.

Argentine pensioners took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Wednesday as they demonstrated against President Javier Milei's anticipated veto of a pension reform bill.

Activists on Wednesday called for more protests of a new law that they say weakens Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdogs, following the first major anti-government demonstration in over three years of war.

The legislation, which has also drawn rebukes from European Union officials and international rights groups, has put increased pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and endangered his public support at a critical phase of the war.

In the morning, Zelenskyy convened the heads of Ukraine's key anti-corruption and security agencies in response to the outcry against his decision to approve the law that was passed by parliament.

“We all hear what society says,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram after the meeting. But he insisted the new legal framework was needed to crack down harder on corruption.

“Criminal cases should not drag on for years without verdicts, and those working against Ukraine must not feel comfortable or immune from punishment,” he said.

Zelenskyy said all government agencies agreed to work constructively and respond to public expectations for fairness and effectiveness.

"Our strategy is right now just absorbing the price and hoping that we see a reduction after the summer months are over, you know, grilling season and all the rest maybe we'll see a price point drop. If we don't see a price point drop, we're gonna have to increase our costs, our price to our customer. Every all the other costs are going up. Cost of employees goes up. All the other staples that we use are, have increased since we've reopened. And so at some point we're gonna have to make that price adjustment. That would be our overall message, you know, let's bite the bullet for as long as we can. And when it starts to impact my ability to take care of my employees, that's when we'll have to adjust."

STORYLINE:

Ken Silver knows beef because he knows Philly cheesesteak. He hopes that a summer spike in how much he pays for his restaurant's main product doesn't cause heartburn for him or his customers.

Silver, president of Jim's South St. in Philadelphia, said the price of beef from his supplier now is about $1 more per pound than it was a year ago. And that is on top of a roughly 50% increase when he reopened in 2024 after a fire — “crazy,” as he put it.
