STORYLINE:

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men blocked a major highway in Jerusalem on Wednesday to protest against enlisting for military service.

“We are forced to go to the army that it is brainwashing, and we can’t keep our religion,” said Dovi, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish protester.

Under longstanding arrangements, ultra-Orthodox men have been exempted from the draft, which is compulsory for most Jewish men and women, who serve two to three years as well, as reserve duty until around age 40.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government suffered a serious blow last week when ultra-Orthodox parties announced they were bolting the coalition.

The parties leaders said they were leaving the government because of disagreements over a proposed law that would end broad exemptions for religious students from enlistment into the military.

Roughly 1.3 million ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 13% of Israel’s population and oppose enlistment because they believe studying full time in religious seminaries is their most important duty.

The House is leaving Washington early as Republicans clash over the Jeffrey Epstein files.

 

Even with the month-long break, the pressure on House Speaker Mike Johnson is unlikely to end.

 

Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican whose contrarian stances are often a thorn in the side of leadership, is gathering support for a legislative maneuver to force the bipartisan bill to a House vote, even without leadership's consent.

STORYLINE:

The stench of trash and regret throughout the French Quarter has been scrubbed away thanks to a change in garbage collectors that New Orleanians say has transformed one of America’s favorite party hotspots.

Residents and a chorus of officials say IV Waste, a company run by a man known as the city's “Trash King", has cracked the code for sanitary success and received near-universal acclaim after receiving an emergency contract in December last year to temporarily manage the Quarter's waste.

But on Wednesday, a civil court judge allowed Mayor LaToya Cantrell to cancel IV Waste's contract and install a new garbage collector for the Quarter at the end of July amid broader litigation still working its way through state courts over who will a receive long-term contract, worth tens of millions of dollars, to manage the neighborhood's trash.

"We have overcome a tremendous challenge. There's no reason for this to happen," says the Daniel Conwill, owner of Felix's Restaurant and Oyster Bar, which has been open in New Orleans since the 1940's.

STORYLINE:

Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador acknowledged that nothing would bring “true justice” for the “evil” of Bryan Kohberger’s murderous attack on four University of Idaho students. But he endorsed the sentence handed down by the court.

“Today’s sentencing ensures one thing: That the perpetrator will never again walk free,” Labrador said Wednesday. “In fact, he will never harm another family.”

Judge Steven Hippler ordered Kohberger to serve four life sentences without parole for four counts of first-degree murder in the brutal stabbing deaths of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin early on Nov. 13, 2022.

He was also given a 10-year sentence for burglary and assessed $270,000 in fines and civil penalties. He has waived his right to appeal.

The defendant pleaded guilty early this month, just weeks before his trial was to start, in a deal to avoid the death penalty, and the prosecutors and defense attorneys had agreed on the sentence.

Prosecutor Bill Thompson has defended the plea deal.

At least one family has blasted the deal as a “shortcut” that didn’t constitute justice.

Thompson said that all perspectives were considered before Kohberger was offered the deal that led to his being sentenced to life in prison.

Kohberger broke into the home through a kitchen sliding door and brutally stabbed the four friends. It remains unclear why Kohberger did it. When given an opportunity to speak Wednesday, he told the judge, “I respectfully decline."

The judge acknowledged that the motive may never be known.

Investigators told reporters after the hearing that exhaustive efforts failed to find the murder weapon or any connection between Kohberger and the students.

Law enforcement confirmed their belief that the location of the murders wasn't random.

The number of tourists arriving in Cuba in the first half of 2025 fell by 25% compared to the same period last year.

The news about the decline in this vital sector of the Cuban economy adds to the growing financial challenges facing the country, which have negatively impacted the population's quality of life over the past five years.

According to the official newspaper Granma, based on data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), the island recorded 981,856 visitors between January and June, which is 327,799 fewer than in the same period in 2024.

Canada remains the top source of visitors with 428,125 arrivals. The newspaper reported declines in visitors from major markets like Russia, Germany, France, Spain, and the Cuban community abroad.

The tourists still visiting the island are faced with garbage piling up in the streets, power outages, and food shortages that affect even some of the best hotels.

The few tourists in the streets of Havana on Wednesday praised the island's beauty but viewed the poverty and hardships as drawbacks to visiting the capital.

“I am young, so I don’t mind (the difficulties) so much, but I can imagine an older person might not be so disposed to deal with those problems,” said Spanish tourist, Beatriz Colmena.

"Ukraine keeps insisting on a full and unconditional ceasefire as the necessary basis for effective diplomacy. We are ready for a ceasefire now and to start substantive peace negotiations. And it is up to the other sides to accept this basic step towards peace."

"Regarding the exchanges of prisoners of war, we expect further progress. We continue to insist on the release of civilians, including children. Real steps are possible, and the other sides must demonstrate a constructive and realistic approach. We will keep working to achieve this."

STORYLINE:

Rustem Umerov, the head of the Ukrainian delegation at peace negotiations in Istanbul, stressed on Wednesday that Kyiv’s top priorities were a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian presidents and a “real ceasefire” ending all strikes on civilian infrastructure.

"This can be a crucial first step towards lasting peace," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his offer to meet with Russia's Vladimir Putin and negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, but hopes of progress were low as delegations held another round of talks.

Russian forces, meanwhile, pounded four Ukrainian cities in night-time attacks that officials said killed a child.

Putin has spurned Zelenskyy’s previous offers of a face-to-face meeting to end Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II. But the Ukrainian leader insisted that lower-level delegations like the ones at talks in Istanbul on Wednesday don't have the political heft to stop the fighting.

The sides remain far apart on how to end the war begun by Russia’s full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022.

Ukrainian and Western officials have accused the Kremlin of stalling in talks in order for its bigger army to capture more Ukrainian land. Russia currently holds about 20% of Ukraine.

The previous two rounds of talks in May and June were also held in Istanbul and led to a series of exchanges of prisoners of war and the bodies of fallen soldiers, but produced no other agreements.
