STORYLINE:

Smoke was seen rising over the Gaza Strip on Monday as Israel widened evacuation orders.

Gaza health officials said Monday at least 13 people, including two women and five children, were killed in Israeli strikes since the previous night.

There was new alarm as Israel’s military issued evacuation orders for parts of central Gaza, one of the few areas where ground troops have rarely operated and where many international organizations are trying to distribute aid.

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million Palestinians are in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, now relying largely on the limited aid allowed into the territory.

The war was triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which left around 1,200 dead and saw 251 people taken hostage.

Israel’s response in Gaza has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The ministry, which is under Gaza’s Hamas government, does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

The U.N. and other international organizations see its figures as the most reliable statistics on war casualties.

1. The Chinese side has announced that the 25th China-EU Leaders’ Meeting is about to take place this week. Could you further elaborate on China’s expectations for this meeting and its assessment of current China-EU relations?

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, and also the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The world is undergoing accelerated transformation unseen in a century, with a complex interplay of changes in the international landscape. Unilateralism and acts of bullying are seriously impacting the international order and international rules. Humanity is once again at a critical crossroads. As two major forces promoting multipolarity, two major markets supporting globalization, and two major civilizations advocating diversity, the holding of the leaders’ meeting between China and the EU at this moment has great significance and has drawn widespread attention from the international community. Over the past half century, China-EU relations have weathered many storms and have continuously matured and stabilized, becoming one of the most influential bilateral relationships in the world.

At the same time, China-EU relations face some challenges. Some individuals on the European side continue to reinforce the threefold positioning of relations with China, playing up specific economic and trade issues in a one-sided manner, and unjustifiably criticize China over the Ukraine issue, causing unnecessary disruptions to China-EU relations. China firmly believes that, after 50 years of development, China-EU relations have accumulated sufficient experience and positive momentum to cope with changing circumstances and challenges. As the 25th China-EU Leaders’ Meeting approaches, China-EU relations are at a crucial juncture of building on the past and opening up the future. China hopes that the EU will work with China in the same direction, take a comprehensive, dialectical, and developmental perspective on China-EU relations, deeply summarize the lessons and inspirations from the past 50 years of China-EU relations, follow the trend of the times and the common expectations of both peoples and the international community, build consensus, transcend differences, jointly plan the cooperation for the next 50 years, and work together to create a better future for the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the EU.

2. Some European diplomatic sources claim that China is attempting to use the opportunity of institutional restructuring on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations to expand its influence in the UN, and is lobbying governments of Global South countries to support its reform proposals. STORYLINE:

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Monday did not confirm a date for a third round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, but said that the Russian negotiating team would remain the same as in previous meetings.

Speaking to journalists, Peskov also said that the memoranda submitted by both governments outlining their proposals to end the conflict were "diametrically opposed."

"There is a lot of diplomatic work ahead of us," he added.

Peskov did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing.

“Our president is preparing for this trip,” Peskov said.

“But we have not heard that (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump is also going there, to Beijing. If it happens that he is there, then of course we cannot rule out that the question of the advisability of holding a meeting will be raised.”

You have existing minorities and tribes that have lived most of their children's lives in chaos. And another government. So when things happen, they resort to their tribe. It's individual, family, tribe and then nation, last. So these… what's happened is horrible. It's unthinkable. And the hope is that out of this, a consolidation of these issues occurs quicker. But, you have a Syrian government in effect, they need to be held accountable. They also need to be given the responsibility that they’re there to do.”
