"I'm in Fort Stewart, Georgia, where yesterday 5 soldiers of the Army's 3rd Infantry division were shot by someone that authorities say was a sergeant in their own unit. Today Army Secretary Dan Driscoll came to the post and presented awards, meritorious service medals to 6 soldiers in the unit. He said because of their quick action, we were able to save the lives of all 5 people who were injured and prevent further injuries. Several of these soldiers, as soon as they heard gunfire, ran out, found the victims, one of them lying in a hallway, a couple of others in their offices, and immediately applied first aid, stopped their bleeding until medics could arrive. Another soldier here says that he saw the gunman walking into a nearby warehouse, wearing a hoodie and carrying a handgun. And that he approached the soldier who he knew and spent several minutes talking to him trying to de-escalate the situation telling him he didn't want anybody else to get hurt until he finally got close enough that he was able to grab the man's gun and take him to the ground and hold him there until military police arrived. Soldiers here at the 2nd brigade combat team, which is the brigade where the attack happened yesterday, were back at work this morning. They were out jogging and doing physical exercises this morning and there were dozens of them gathered here for when the Army Secretary came. In addition to granting medals to the 6 soldiers who intervened immediately, he also thanked a number of other army soldiers, firefighters, sheriff's deputies and others who were part of the response yesterday. There's still a lot we don't know about this shooting, for instance, why it might have happened. The army officials here and investigators are not speculating and we'll have to wait. They say the investigation is is continuing. They're still gathering evidence, but Secretary Driscoll promised that they will release more as they're able to."

'meltemi' — the Greek wind that blows through the Aegean. It's very specific; everyone else hates it, but we love it. It usually comes in July and August, so we get heat, lots of wind — it’s great. But I enjoy it in winter too, because we get strong north winds, and there are often sailing bans — so while the seas are off-limits to others, we’re out there — and fewer of us too.”

STORYLINE:

Strong August winds swept across Greece's eastern coastline near Athens on Thursday, drawing dozens of kitesurfers, who performed impressive aerials against a cloudless sky.

With gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour), the beach at Agios Nikolaos — a rugged strip east of the Greek capital, near the port of Rafina — transformed into an open-air playground for wind sports enthusiasts chasing the seasonal “meltemi” winds.

“The bigger the jump and the longer you’re in the air, the more intense the feeling of joy this gives you,” said Alexios Limperopoulos, 38, a business owner and longtime kiteboarder who took a break from running his two restaurants to ride the waves.

The meltemi — a dry northern wind that sweeps through the Aegean in summer — is dreaded by ferry passengers and commercial sailors but revered by the tight-knit community of kiteboarders who plan their days, and sometimes their lives, around the weather report.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Israeli protesters gathered on Thursday near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem, as Israel’s Security Cabinet convened to discuss a possible expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Such a move would draw fierce opposition internationally and from many in Israel, including the families of hostages held by Hamas.

An Israeli official said the Security Cabinet would hold a lengthy debate and approve an expanded military plan to conquer all or parts of Gaza not yet under Israeli control.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal decision, said that whatever is approved would be implemented gradually to increase pressure on Hamas.

In Gaza, where Israel's 22-month offensive has already killed tens of thousands of people, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and caused severe and widespread hunger, Palestinians braced for further misery.

At least 42 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes and shootings across southern Gaza on Thursday, according to local hospitals.

The indictment, filed in federal court in Washington, charges Elias Rodriguez with nine counts, including a hate crime resulting in death. The indictment also includes notice of special findings, which would allow the Justice Department to potentially pursue the death penalty.

Elias Rodriguez is accused of gunning down Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim as they left an event at the museum in May. He was heard shouting “Free Palestine” as he was led away after his arrest. He told police, “I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza,” federal authorities have said.
