STORYLINE:

The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday terminated a $7 billion grant program intended to help pay for residential solar projects for more than 900,000 lower-income U.S. households, in the latest Trump administration move hindering the nation’s shift to cleaner energy.

The funding, part of the Biden-era's Solar for All program, was awarded to 60 recipients including states, tribes and regions for investments such as rooftop solar and community solar gardens. Solar, a renewable energy, is widely regarded as a way to introduce cleaner power onto the electrical grid and lower energy bills for American consumers.

Under Republican President Donald Trump, officials have pursued dozens of deregulatory measures related to federal rules intended to protect clean air and water. Last week, the EPA proposed rescinding the agency’s “endangerment finding” which serves as the scientific and legal basis for regulating planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

The administration has taken steps to bolster fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas as it pursues American "energy dominance" in the global market.

Only $53 million of the $7 billion awarded has been spent, according to a tally by the research firm Atlas Public Policy. Several grant recipients this week said their programs were in planning phases.

Grant recipients have filed lawsuits challenging the administration’s actions, and a judge ruled in April the EPA cannot freeze the contracts.

STORYLINE:

France’s largest wildfire in decades was contained Thursday after burning more than 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) in the country's southern wine region and claiming one life, local authorities said.

The blaze erupted Tuesday and tore through the Aude region, spreading rapidly due to hot, dry weather. Cooler overnight temperatures and calmer winds slowed its advance and allowed firefighters to make headway.

Late Thursday, the region's top government official said the fire was contained. However, residents were warned not to return home without authorization, as many roads remained blocked and dangerous.

The fire swept through 15 communes in the Corbières mountain region, destroying or damaging at least 36 homes, with a full damage assessment still underway. One person died at home, and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters, according to local authorities. Three people who were reported missing have been found safe.

An investigation is underway to determine what sparked the fire.

The fire was the largest recorded since France’s national fire database was created in 2006.

But France’s minister for ecological transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, called the blaze the worst since 1949 and linked it to climate change.

“It is a fire that is clearly a consequence of climate change and drought in this region,” she told France Info radio.

STORYLINE:

A plane belonging to an air ambulance service provider crashed in a residential area just outside Kenya's capital on Thursday, killing at least six people, according to a local official and the aircraft's owner.

Witnesses at the scene told the Associated Press they had found body parts scattered around the site.

AMREF Flying Doctors said that the mid-size jet, a Cessna Citation XLS, took off from an airport in Nairobi and was heading to the territory of Somaliland when it crashed.

The service provider didn't provide the number of casualties or a possible cause, saying in a statement that it was “cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.”

The plane crashed in the residential area of Mwihoko in Kiambu County, which shares a border with Nairobi.

A local official, Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula, told reporters at the scene that four people on board were killed in the crash. Two other victims were inside a house into which the plane crashed, he said.

The Kenya Red Cross said that its rescue teams headed to the crash scene in Kiambu, a county that shares a border with Nairobi. Earlier, the Kenya Red Cross had said that the aircraft that crashed was a helicopter.

Just a week after the Ivorian president announced his intention to run for a controversial fourth term this October, supporters and members of his administration gathered in the central city of Bouaké to mark the country’s 65th independence anniversary with a military parade.

President Alassane Ouattara appeared in a military vehicle at the start of the parade, which was largely off-limits to the public.

French, American, and Moroccan military personnel participated in the event, signaling Ivory Coast’s continued military cooperation with Western powers at a time when much of West Africa is moving in the opposite direction.

Amadou Coulibaly, Ivory Coast’s Communication Minister, praised this military cooperation.

“This military parade demonstrated the military power that is Ivory Coast,” he said. “We are pleased that friendly countries like the United States, France, and Morocco participated in this parade, and all of this reflects Ivory Coast’s position on the geostrategic and geopolitical stage.”

STORYLINE:

Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband and talent manager, has died of cancer, his family said Thursday. He was 48.

“Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years,” a representative for the Blackstock family shared in a statement to The Associated Press. “He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

The news was first reported by People magazine. On Wednesday, Clarkson announced that she was postponing her “Studio Session” concerts in Las Vegas, writing on Instagram, “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.”

Blackstock was the father to four children, two from a previous marriage and two with Clarkson.

Clarkson and Blackstock were married in October 2013. In 2020, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

He was previously Clarkson’s manager and also formerly represented Blake Shelton.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of protesters holding chains gathered on Thursday, near the prime minister’s office in Jerusalem, as Israel’s Security Cabinet convened to discuss a possible expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Such a move would draw fierce opposition internationally and from many in Israel, including the families of hostages held by Hamas.

The mother of one hostage, Anat Angrest accused Netanyahu of failing his son, " instead of doing the one thing that this government hasn’t done — putting a comprehensive deal on the table — to put a comprehensive deal on the table that will bring all 50 of them home together."

A similar protest was held in Tel Aviv on Thursday, where protesters waving flags and holding photos of hostages, gathered around burning tires.

An Israeli official said the Security Cabinet would hold a lengthy debate and approve an expanded military plan to conquer all or parts of Gaza not yet under Israeli control.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal decision, said that whatever is approved would be implemented gradually to increase pressure on Hamas.

Asked in an interview with Fox News if Israel would “take control of all of Gaza,” Netanyahu replied: “We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza, and to pass it to civilian governance that is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel."

The Security Cabinet would still need to approve such a decision.

In Gaza, where Israel's 22-month offensive has already killed tens of thousands of people, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and caused severe and widespread hunger, Palestinians braced for further misery.

At least 42 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes and shootings across southern Gaza on Thursday, according to local hospitals.

Residents of Hungary's capital on Thursday encountered a rare sight on the streets of Budapest: two camels lumbering down the street as part of demonstration by an environmental group to draw attention to the possible desertification of Hungary.

Members of the Green Guerrilla Movement marched with their animals through central Budapest to the gates of Agriculture Ministry as part of their "Carpathian Desert Project," a demonstration against the government's water policy, which they see as ignoring climate change.

Six soldiers at a Georgia Army base are being hailed as heroes for tackling an armed assailant accused of shooting five people.

Officials say Sgt. Quornelius Radford used a personal handgun to shoot five soldiers Wednesday at Fort Stewart before being tackled by other troops.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised the soldiers' quick actions, saying they saved lives. The wounded soldiers are stable and expected to recover.

Sgt. Aaron Turner said he was helping lock down a supply warehouse on Fort Stewart after gunshots were reported in a neighboring office building. Then he saw a fellow soldier walking past, wearing a hooded sweatshirt over his uniform and holding a handgun.

Instead of ducking for cover, Turner said, he approached the gunman and started talking _ asking what he was doing there, and where he was heading. When he got close enough, Turner grabbed the soldier's gun and took him to the floor, holding him until military police arrived.

“Pretty much my training ended up kicking in," Turner said Thursday. "It wasn’t about my life at that point. It was about the soldiers.”

The suspect was arrested and officials are investigating the motive. This incident raises concerns about safety on military bases. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.

STORYLINE:

Airdrops of aid continued Thursday over the Gaza Strip as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to announce further military action — and possibly plans for Israel to fully reoccupy Gaza.

An Israeli official said the Security Cabinet is expected to hold a lengthy debate and approve an expanded military plan to conquer all or parts of Gaza not yet under Israeli control. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal decision, said that whatever is approved would be implemented gradually to increase pressure on Hamas.

But expanding military operations would further isolate Israel internationally, after several of its closest Western allies have called on it to end the war and facilitate more humanitarian aid.

Israel has faced mounting international pressure over the hunger situation in Gaza, which led to the start of international airdrops.

The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, however, warned that airdrops are “expensive, inefficient and can even kill starving civil... [truncated]
