Taiwan’s stock market opened higher on Friday, shrugging off concerns over a new 100% U.S. tariff on semiconductors announced by President Donald Trump just a day earlier.

The local market’s upbeat performance came even as U.S. markets posted mixed results on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 224.48 points, weighed down by investor caution amid tariff uncertainty, the tech-heavy Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rising by 83.41 points, or 1.5%, signaling investor confidence in semiconductor stocks.

Analysts noted that while the tariff announcement has introduced fresh uncertainty into the global semiconductor trade, Taiwan’s chipmakers are seen as indispensable players in the global tech ecosystem, which may help cushion the impact of future policy shifts.

STORYLINE:

Police officers blocked the street leading to where two Pennsylvania state troopers were ambushed and shot Thursday, near the village of Thompson, in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

A 61-year-old man shot and killed his neighbor in rural Pennsylvania Thursday and then ambushed responding state troopers, wounding two and shooting down a drone while firing dozens of rounds from a semiautomatic weapon, police said. The attacker was killed by police.

The boyfriend of the woman who was killed, Lori Wasko, called 911 after 11 a.m. from their home near Thompson to report that shots had been fired, state police Col. Christopher Paris told reporters. Police did not say why Carmine Faino decided to kill 57-year-old Wasko outside her home and then fire at responding troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins.

Faino also fired at police vehicles and at an SUV operated by a responding emergency worker, Paris said. The EMT was injured when his vehicle veered off the roadway and was being treated, Paris said.

Both troopers were in stable condition with serious injuries Thursday night, he said.

The troopers were flown to hospitals for medical care.

Faino had a rifle and did not comply with demands, a state police statement said. He was “ultimately shot and killed during the incident,” police said.

The shooting happened about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of the borough of Thompson, some 163 miles (262 kilometers) north of Philadelphia.

STORYLINE:

A plane belonging to an air ambulance service provider crashed in a residential area just outside Kenya's capital on Thursday, killing at least six people, according to a local official and the aircraft's owner.

Witnesses at the scene told the Associated Press they had found body parts scattered around the site.

AMREF Flying Doctors said that the mid-size jet, a Cessna Citation XLS, took off from an airport in Nairobi and was heading to the territory of Somaliland when it crashed.

The service provider didn't provide the number of casualties or a possible cause, saying in a statement that it was “cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.”

The plane crashed in the residential area of Mwihoko in Kiambu County, which shares a border with Nairobi.

A local official, Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula, told reporters at the scene that four people on board were killed in the crash. Two other victims were inside a house into which the plane crashed, he said.

The Kenya Red Cross said that its rescue teams headed to the crash scene in Kiambu, a county that shares a border with Nairobi. Earlier, the Kenya Red Cross had said that the aircraft that crashed was a helicopter.

Trade unions, health professionals, educators, and citizen groups held a demonstration in Quito on Thursday to protest recent decisions made by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa's government.

Among those organizing the protest were the United Workers' Front (FUT), the National Union of Educators (UNE), the Ecuadorian Medical Federation (FME), Faperpise, and more than 15 other organizations. They are demanding that the Court rule on the Security Law, the Intelligence Law, and the Public Integrity Law, which were promoted by the Executive Branch. They also protested the merger of ministries and mass layoffs in the public sector.

During the march, protesters denounced the more than 5,000 layoffs in the public sector and warned that this number could reach 60,000 by 2028. They also criticized the elimination of entities such as the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Secretariat for Child Malnutrition.

The South Korean market opened slightly lower due to foreign and institutional investors selling amid concerns over U.S tariffs.

A few minutes after the market opening, South Korea's benchmark KOSPI (Korean Composite Stock Price Index) was at 3221.86, which was 0.18% lower than Thursday's close.

Elsewhere, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia.

Stocks climbed 0.2% in Shanghai and 0.7% in Hong Kong after China reported that its exports picked up in July, helped by a flurry of shipments as businesses took advantage of a pause in Trump’s tariff war with Beijing.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.6%. Toyota Motor’s stock fell after it cut its full-year earnings forecasts largely because of Trump’s tariffs, but Sony rose after the entertainment and electronics company indicated it’s taking less damage from the tariffs than it had expected.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.23% from 4.22% late Wednesday after the latest reports on the U.S. economy came in mixed.

Thousands of supporters of Colombia's ex-President gathered on the streets of downtown Bogotá Thursday, after Alvaro Uribe was sentenced to 12 years of house arrest in an unprecedented ruling against a former head of state in Colombia.

Uribe supporters were heard chanting “Uribe, my friend, the people are with you.”

Uribe, who ruled the country between 2002 and 2010, continues to generate marked admiration among a segment of the population that believes his heavy-handed policies against illegal groups, especially leftist ones such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), were necessary, and strong rejection among another segment that claims he allowed serious human rights violations such as extrajudicial killings of civilians.

His legacy has been tarnished by last week's first-instance conviction by Judge Sandra Heredia, who found him guilty of instigating a lawyer to manipulate former paramilitaries with offers of money or criminal benefits to testify in his favor and deny any alleged links between the former president and those illegal groups. However, she acquitted him in a case involving the bribery of a former prosecutor convicted of corruption.

Uribe pleaded not guilty and appealed the first instance ruling, questioning the judge's impartiality and warning that she had political motives.

Actor Gina Carano has settled her federal lawsuit against Lucasfilm and its parent The Walt Disney Co. over her claim that she was fired from “The Mandalorian” in 2021 for expressing right-wing views on social media.

The specific terms of the agreement were not made available.

“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect,” Lucasfilm said in a statement. “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

The two sides stipulated in a federal court filing Thursday that the case should be dismissed with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. A judge still needs to formally dismiss it. The case had been scheduled to go to trial in Los Angeles in February of next year.

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in California last year, alleged Carano was wrongfully terminated from the “Star Wars” galaxy Disney+ series after two seasons due to a post likening the treatment of American conservatives to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany. Her posts were widely criticized online and spurred a trending #FireGinaCarano hashtag.

“I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud,” Carano wrote in a statement Thursday. “I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”

Carano thanked Elon Musk for helping fund the lawsuit “and asking for nothing in return.” The suit had alleged that the 43-year-old actor was fired because she “dared voice her own opinions” against an “online bully mob who demanded her compliance with their extreme progressive ideology.”

Carano is a former mixed martial artist who played the recurring character Cara Dune on the show, which launched in 2019 and ran for three seasons. A feature film starring Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” is set for release next summer.

Carano had previously been criticized for mocking mask wearing during the pandemic and making false allegations of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.

A wealthy businessman became president Thursday of Haiti’s transitional presidential council tasked with restoring order in the troubled country, while a prominent gangster underscored the challenges by vowing to overthrow the government.

The appointment of Laurent Saint-Cyr at the council’s heavily guarded office in the capital of Port-au-Prince - where criminal gangs control 90% of the neighborhoods - marked the first time that people from Haiti’s private sector serve in both the rotating presidency and as prime minister - two positions that share the country’s executive duties.

“Our country is going through one of the greatest crises in all its history,” Saint-Cyr said at a ceremony attended by ambassadors of several countries. “It’s not the time for beautiful speeches. It’s time to act.”

Saint-Cyr previously served as president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Haiti and of the country’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He’ll be working with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, a one-time president of an internet company in Haiti and also a former president of the country’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A growing number of people have grumbled about Haiti's private sector leading the country. Some of Haiti’s wealthy elites and powerful politicians have long been accused of financing and arming dozens of gangs.

However, dozens of Haitians wearing white T-shirts and clutching signs emblazoned with Saint-Cyr's picture gathered outside the council's office to support him.

Hours before the swearing-in, a powerful gang federation that has long denounced Haiti’s oligarchs threatened to overthrow the government, and gunfire erupted in parts of the capital in the morning as many residents stayed away from usually congested streets.
