STORYLINE:

Ukrainian soldiers are holding the Russian offensive on the eastern frontline amid US President Donald Trump's looming ceasefire deadline.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he hopes to meet next week with U.S. President Donald Trump, possibly in the United Arab Emirates, although a White House official cast doubt on the summit occurring unless the Kremlin leader also agreed to a meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Putin’s announcement came on the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress toward ending the 3-year war in Ukraine or suffer additional economic sanctions.

The U.S. was still expected to impose those sanctions Friday on Russia, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ukraine fears being sidelined by direct negotiations between Washington and Moscow, and Zelenskyy said he had phone conversations with several European leaders Thursday amid a flurry of diplomatic activity. European countries have pledged to back Ukraine for as long as it takes to defeat Russia's invasion.

By day, it’s easy to overlook. But as evening nears, it transforms into one of the city’s most sought-after stages for romance.

Starting in spring and continuing through summer, soon-to-be and newlywed couples flock to this unassuming spot in Eminonu district to immortalize their nuptials in radiant, and often highly choreographed, sunset photo shoots.

The spot is so popular, a dozen brides and grooms can often be seen posing side by side, each vying for a sliver of the sunset glow. At peak hours, a traffic jam of couples forms on the stairs leading to the waterside overlook, waiting for their turn.

On any given day during high season, brides and grooms — their faces lit with joy and hope — pose for the cameras, marking the start of their union and creating memories meant to last a lifetime.

“We both love it,” said 22-year-old Elif Yuksel while she stood next to her fiancé, Semih Aydin. “That's why we wanted to be photographed somewhere we could see every corner of Istanbul.”

The setting sun casts its light just right during what’s known as “golden hour,” a coveted time for photographers and videographers who frame their shots against the backdrop of the medieval Galata Tower and the Ottoman imperial mosque, Suleymaniye, the city’s second largest.

It’s a fitting setting for newlyweds like Hasret Yilmaz Ucucu and her husband, Halil Ibrahim Ucucu, who had tied the knot shortly before their shoot.

“I went to the hairdresser and got ready there. Then my husband came and picked me up and we went to our wedding ceremony. Afterward (our photographer) brought us here with great excitement,” said the 24-year-old bride.

For many couples, the photos are more than keepsakes — they symbolize a moment in time when love, tradition and the centuries-old city’s enduring splendor intertwine.

“I've been to London, I've been to Barcelona. There's no place like Istanbul,” said Semih Aydin, who was taking engagement pictures with his soon-to-be wife. “We said, ‘… Let's take beautiful photos, let's make beautiful memories to show our children in the future.’”

STORYLINE:

The director of an Indian luxury garment manufacturer and exporter described Thursday U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on India as "drastic".

Seema Malik, the director of Global Crafts, told the Associated Press that "a lot of people will get impacted," as the company works with artisans, crafts workers and tailors.

Trump has vowed an additional 25% tariff on India as a sanction for its purchases of Russian oil, bringing the combined tariffs imposed by the U.S. on its ally to 50%.

A leading group of Indian exporters said that will affect nearly 55% of the country’s outbound shipments to the U.S. and force exporters to lose long-standing clients.

Malik said Global Crafts exports 90% of their products to the U.S.

She fears that clients will take their business to other Asian countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, who have lower tariffs.

Trump's Wednesday announcement came as India and the U.S. are still negotiating a trade deal that has faced roadblocks after it was first announced when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Trump in Washington earlier this year.

People in Japan attended a memorial ceremony Friday for the South Koreans killed in Nagasaki's atomic bombing - commemorating the day before the bomb was dropped 80 years ago.

Around 80 people gathered around the memorial built four years ago in front of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, near the hypocenter. 

A moment of silence was held at 11:02 a.m. local time (0202GMT), the time when the bomb was dropped. 

The U.S. bomb that was dropped August 9, 1945, killing over 70,000 in the city, including wartime Korean workers and prisoners of war.

According to Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Association, over 50,000 Koreans in Nagasaki and Hiroshima lost their lives due to the bombings. 

Nobuto Hirano has long championed providing state assistance to Korean victims of the atomic bombing, and told The Associated Press that noone can be certain about the actual number. 

The stone memorial was built in 2021, and took almost 30 years since its planning, said Kang Seoung Choon, the head of Korean Residents Union (Mindan) in Nagasaki. 

"It was a long-awaited dream for the those in Nagasaki, especially for the older generation," Kang Seoung Choon added.

Toshio Yoshioka, a 94-year-old who experienced the atomic bombing himself, has been attending the ceremony every year as he felt a strong bond with South Korea.

As a police officer stationed in Tsushima, a Japanese island located closer to South Korea than Japan, he investigated cases which involved South Koreans for over 40 years.

Strong August winds swept across Greece's eastern coastline near Athens on Thursday, drawing dozens of kitesurfers, who performed impressive aerials against a cloudless sky.

With gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour), the beach at Agios Nikolaos — a rugged strip east of the Greek capital, near the port of Rafina — transformed into an open-air playground for wind sports enthusiasts chasing the seasonal “meltemi” winds.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 benchmark surged by 2% on Friday morning.

Japan’s chief tariff negotiator said the U.S. officials acknowledged that the new tariffs that took effect were inconsistent with their agreement, blaming paperwork errors, and that they will correct and pay back the excess from August 7.

The U.S. side agreed to issue the presidential orders to correct the inconsistency of the tariffs and to reduce the new 15% tariffs to automobile and auto parts from the current 25%, said the negotiator, in Washington to discuss the irregularities.

President Donald Trump began levying higher import taxes on dozens of countries Thursday, just as the economic fallout of his monthslong tariff threats has begun to create visible damage for the U.S. economy.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of protesters holding chains gathered on Thursday, near the prime minister’s office in Jerusalem, as Israel’s Security Cabinet convened to discuss a possible expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Such a move would draw fierce opposition internationally and from many in Israel, including the families of hostages held by Hamas.

The mother of one hostage, Anat Angrest accused Netanyahu of failing his son, "instead of doing the one thing that this government hasn’t done — putting a comprehensive deal on the table — to put a comprehensive deal on the table that will bring all 50 of them home together."

A similar protest was held in Tel Aviv on Thursday, where protesters waving flags and holding photos of hostages, gathered around burning tires.

An Israeli official said the Security Cabinet would hold a lengthy debate and approve an expanded military plan to conquer all or parts of Gaza not yet under Israeli control.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal decision, said that whatever is approved would be implemented gradually to increase pressure on Hamas.

Asked in an interview with Fox News if Israel would “take control of all of Gaza,” Netanyahu replied: “We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza, and to pass it to civilian governance that is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel."

Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a plan to take over Gaza City, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said. The decision taken early Friday marks another escalation of Israel’s 22-month offensive launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.

The war has already killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, destroyed much of Gaza and pushed the territory of some 2 million Palestinians toward famine.
