STORYLINE:

Foreign nations continued airdropping aid in Gaza Friday amid Israel's announcement of its plan to retake Gaza City in another escalation of the war.

The decision, made after a late-night meeting of top officials, drew Palestinian rejection, fueled mounting international calls to end the war and provoked worries in Israel over the fate of hostages still held by Hamas.

Israel’s air and ground war has already killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine. Another major ground operation would almost certainly exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe.

Hamas rebuffed Israel's plans in a statement and said people in Gaza would “remain defiant against occupation."

“Expanding of aggression against our Palestinian people will not be a walk in the park," the group said.

Meanwhile the about 2 million people in Gaza depend of humanitarian aid to survive.

Israel implemented a total blockade on aid trucks entering the Gaza Strip in early March and began allowing aid back in May, although humanitarian organizations say the amount remains far from adequate.

(6 Aug 2025) The Port of Antwerp, Europe's second busiest port after Rotterdam, continued to load and unload giant container ships for destinations all around the world.

This comes as the European Union is prepared for its new trade deal with the United States to go into effect.

The European Union is working on the presumption that the United States will impose a 15% tariff on most EU exports from Friday, even though the two sides have yet to complete a key document clarifying how the agreement will operate.

U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have reached a political agreement that would see 15% duties imposed on around two-thirds of EU produce, worth around 380 billion euros ($434 billion).

(7 Aug 2025) President Donald Trump’s new tariff rates on U.S. imports from dozens of countries took effect Thursday, the latest chapter in the saga of Trump’s reshaping of global trade. But many questions remain.

Trump has threatened tariffs of up to 200% on imports of pharmaceuticals and has ordered a 100% import tax on computer chips.

Most U.S. imports of copper, steel and aluminum are subject to a 50% tariff.

There’s still no agreement on what tariffs might apply to products shipped from China. India has no deal yet and faces a potential 50% tariff as Trump pressures it to stop buying oil from Russia.

Recent data shows uncertainty is clouding the outlook for exporters around the world as a rush to beat the tariffs during a pause for negotiation tapers off.

Companies are reporting billions of dollars in higher costs or losses due to the higher import duties.

Global financial markets took Thursday's tariff adjustments in stride, with Asian shares and U.S. futures mostly higher.

The tariffs announced on August 1 apply to 66 countries, Taiwan and the Falkland Islands.

They are a revised version of what Trump called " reciprocal tariffs," announced on April 2: import taxes of up to 50% on goods from countries that have a trade surplus with the United States, along with 10% “baseline’’ taxes on almost everyone else.

That move triggered sell-offs in financial markets and Trump backtracked to allow time for trade talks.

The president has bypassed Congress, which has authority over taxes, by invoking a 1977 law to declare the trade deficit a national emergency. That's being challenged in court, but the revised tariffs still took effect.

To keep their access to the huge American market, major trading partners have struck deals with Trump.

The United Kingdom agreed to 10% tariffs and the European Union, South Korea and Japan accepted U.S. tariffs of 15%. Those are much higher than the low single-digit rates they paid last year, but down from the 30% Trump had ordered for the EU and the 25% he ordered for Japan.

Countries in Africa and Asia are mostly facing lower rates than the ones Trump decreed in April. Thailand, Pakistan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines cut deals with Trump, settling for rates of around 20%.

Indonesia views its 19% tariff deal as a leg up against exporters in other countries that will have to pay slightly more, said Fithra Faisal Hastiadi, a spokesperson in the Indonesian president's office.

“We were competing against Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China ... and they are all subject to higher reciprocal tariffs,” Hastiadi said.

“We believe we will stay competitive.”

(7 Aug 2025) US President Donald Trump’s new tariff rates on U.S. imports from dozens of countries took effect Thursday - the latest chapter in the saga of Trump’s reshaping of global trade.

The Philippines, a longtime treaty ally of the United States, received a 19% tariff from the Trump administration.

The latest figure represents a slight increase from the 17% tariff that was announced by the Trump administration in April.

Key Philippine exports to the U.S. include electronic products, including semiconductors, automobile parts, textiles and garments, wheat and animal feeds, coconut oil.

Philippine government reaction to Trump’s tariff impositions has been relatively tame.

The Philippines and the U.S. are considerably strengthening their defense cooperation and largescale combat exercises in northern and western Philippine coastal provinces.

Hamas rebuffed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans in a statement and said people in Gaza would “remain defiant against occupation."

“Expanding of aggression against our Palestinian people will not be a walk in the park," the group said.

Netanyahu has signaled plans for even broader war.

Early Thursday, he outlined more sweeping plans in an interview with Fox News, saying Israel planned to take control of all of Gaza. Israel already controls around three quarters of the devastated territory.

Israel's plan, announced after the Security Cabinet met through Thursday night, stopped short of what Netanyahu had suggested, and may be aimed in part at pressuring Hamas to accept a ceasefire on Israel's terms.

It may also reflect the reservations of Israel’s top general, who reportedly warned that expanding operations would endanger the remaining 20 or so living hostages held by Hamas and further strain Israel’s army after nearly two years of regional wars.

The military “will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones,” Netanyahu's office said in a statement after the meeting.

Israel has repeatedly bombarded Gaza City and carried out numerous raids there, only to return to different neighborhoods again and again as militants regrouped. Today, it is one of the few areas in Gaza that hasn’t been turned into an Israeli buffer zone or placed under evacuation orders.

A major ground operation there could displace tens of thousands of people and further disrupt efforts to deliver food to the hunger-stricken territory.

It’s unclear how many people reside in the city, which was Gaza’s largest before the war. Hundreds of thousands fled Gaza City under evacuation orders in the opening weeks of the war, but many returned during a ceasefire at the start of this year.

STORYLINE:

Ukrainian soldiers are holding the Russian offensive on the eastern frontline amid US President Donald Trump's looming ceasefire deadline.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he hopes to meet next week with U.S. President Donald Trump, possibly in the United Arab Emirates, although a White House official cast doubt on the summit occurring unless the Kremlin leader also agreed to a meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Putin’s announcement came on the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress toward ending the 3-year war in Ukraine or suffer additional economic sanctions.

The U.S. was still expected to impose those sanctions Friday on Russia, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ukraine fears being sidelined by direct negotiations between Washington and Moscow, and Zelenskyy said he had phone conversations with several European leaders Thursday amid a flurry of diplomatic activity. European countries have pledged to back Ukraine for as long as it takes to defeat Russia's invasion.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Buddhist monks in Cambodia on Friday held a religious ceremony to honor soldiers killed in recent border clashes with Thai forces, and to pray for peace.

They marched from the country’s main religious school near the Royal Palace, in the capital Phnom Penh, to a nearby temple, where they were joined by nuns and laymen and women.

A board inside displayed the photographs of more than 40 men in uniform. It wasn’t clear whether these images were all of soldiers killed or whether they included images of those wounded and captured.

Cambodia has only admitted to the deaths of six of its troops in the fighting, which began late last month and continued for five days.

The monks chanted and prayed to honour the souls of the dead soldiers and to pray for lasting peace.

Dozens of people were killed in the fighting and over 260,000 displaced on both sides of the border.

It began on July 24, after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers, the second such incident in a week.

It was the latest eruption of hostilities in a decades-old dispute over ownership of several small pockets of land along the 800-km land border.

Under pressure from U.S. President, Donald Trump, the two countries agreed a ceasefire on July 28.

This continues to hold, though tension remains high, with both sides accusing the other of breaches and of acting in bad faith.

Talks in Kuala Lumpur, Thursday, reaffirmed commitment to the ceasefire deal but failed to secure the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, captured in disputed circumstances, after the agreement went into effect.

Thailand says it is treating the men in full compliance with international humanitarian law and will free them once "active hostilities" end.
