With temperatures reaching close to 39 degrees celsius in Madrid, tourists and locals alike have taken to using parasols and fans to cool down, while others have flocked to a free 'climate refuge' in the city center.

The Spanish capital, along with much of the country's south, is experiencing a period of extreme temperatures and the heatwave is expected to continue until at least next Wednesday, according to national weather service AEMET.

The Bellas Artes Cultural Centre in central Madrid has - for the second consecutive year - created a free climate refuge for visitors to escape Madrid's torrid temperatures, and enjoy a rest, drink of water and perhaps a game of chess.

"It's really nice, isn't it? It's quite a peaceful place to relax and it's cool here with the heat of Madrid," said 24-year old Raquel Benítez, who was visiting from the Canary Islands.

The climate shelter is located in the center's ballroom and serves as a kind of covered plaza filled with vegetation.

To make the space more comfortable, furniture and hammocks have been designed by the recycling company Basurama.

More than 300 plants have been loaned by the nearby Retiro Park Greenhouse Nursery.

The Refuge also features the sound installation ‘Permanencia Vegetal’ (Plant Permanence), developed specifically for the space by artist Sayaka Fujio.

Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed as the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, especially in southeastern Europe, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires.

France’s largest wildfire in decades was contained Thursday after burning more than 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) in the country's southern wine region and claiming one life, local authorities said.

The blaze erupted Tuesday and tore through the Aude region, spreading rapidly due to hot, dry weather. Cooler overnight temperatures and calmer winds slowed its advance and allowed firefighters to make headway.

Late Thursday, the region's top government official said the fire was contained. However, residents were warned not to return home without authorization, as many roads remained blocked and dangerous.

The fire swept through 15 communes in the Corbières mountain region, destroying or damaging at least 36 homes, with a full damage assessment still underway. One person died at home, and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters, according to local authorities. Three people who were reported missing have been found safe.

An investigation is underway to determine what sparked the fire.

The fire was the largest recorded since France’s national fire database was created in 2006.

But France’s minister for ecological transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, called the blaze the worst since 1949 and linked it to climate change.

Despite the breakthrough, officials warned the situation remained fragile.

The region’s economy relies heavily on winemaking and tourism — both hard-hit.

The fire began in the village of Ribaute, in a rural, wooded area known for its wineries. Pouget said between 8 and 9 square kilometers (more than 3 square miles) of vineyards had burned. Officials estimate 80% of local vines were either destroyed or damaged — and even the grapes that survived may be too smoke-tainted to produce quality wine.

“The vineyards are burnt and the landscape is gone,” said Batiste Caval, a seventh-generation winemaker near Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse.

President Donald Trump on Thursday imposed once unthinkably high U.S. taxes on imports from dozens of countries, part of his campaign to turn one of the world's most open economies into a fortress bristling with barriers to trade.

The taxes — tariffs — that took effect at midnight apply to products from 66 countries, the European Union, Taiwan and the Falkland Islands.

Trump believes the tariffs will protect U.S. industry from foreign competition, encourage companies to build factories and hire workers in the United States and raise revenue to pay for the massive tax cuts he signed into law July 4.

The United Kingdom agreed to 10% tariffs and the European Union, South Korea and Japan accepted U.S. tariffs of 15%.

Those are well above the low single-digit rates they paid last year, but down from the 30% Trump had ordered for the EU and the 25% he ordered for Japan in April.

The grandson of a late Turkish mob boss appeared at a court in Romania’s capital on Friday to challenge a request from his home country to extradite him, months after he was arrested during a traffic stop.

Ismail Onur Ozbizerdik arrived at the Bucharest Court of Appeals, which is expected to decide on whether to extradite him at the request of Turkish authorities.

It is unclear when the court will issue a final ruling.

Ozbizerdik was placed under preventative arrest after being pulled over in April by Romanian traffic police.

Ozbizerdik is the grandson of late Turkish mob boss Dundar Kilic who died in 1999.
