STORYLINE:

Haze from forest and peatland fires in some parts of Indonesia’s Sumatra island was detected in Malaysia on Sunday, officials said.

A number of areas in Indonesia's Riau province were still covered by thick haze and some fires were not extinguished.

“About four to five days ago, fire spots started to appear, which then grew larger due to weather factors (dry season) and strong winds, and we have made every effort to the maximum,” said Gen. Maj. Herry Heryawan, the head of Riau provincial police.

Forest and peat fires are an annual problem in Indonesia that strain relations with neighboring countries.

In recent years, smoke from fires blanketed parts of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and southern Thailand.

Rokan Hilir and Rokan Hulu districts were the worst hit areas by fires that burned about 46 hectares in the two districts, resulting in heavy haze pollution across the area that reduced visibility to as low as one kilometer (half a mile).

Forest fires on Sumatra and Borneo islands often break out in the region during dry spells, smothering parts of nearby Singapore and Malaysia in haze.

At Gaza’s Shifa hospital, ambulances arrived in waves, unloading the wounded and the dead.

Others carried the injured in by hand. Bodies wrapped in shrouds lay on the ground as mourners gathered around them, wailing in grief.

Among the survivors was Ehab al-Zein, who described being ambushed while waiting for flour at the aid site.

“We were waiting for flour because of hunger. We wanted to eat and drink. Suddenly the tanks came out, surrounding us. They started shooting at us and we were unable to move," he said.

"Some escaped, some were killed and others were injured," al-Zein added.

Nafiz al-Najjar, who was injured in the attack, said it was his first time attempting to reach aid through the Zikim route.

"I was injured in my ear and hand. Young men were killed in front of me," he said.

At least 73 people were killed while attempting to access aid at locations across Gaza on Sunday, the health ministry in the Palestinian territory said.

The largest toll was in northern Gaza, where at least 67 Palestinians were killed while trying to reach aid entering northern Gaza through the Zikim crossing with Israel, according to the ministry and local hospitals.

More than 150 people were wounded, with some of them in critical condition, hospitals said.

It wasn't immediately clear whether they were killed by the Israeli army or armed gangs or both. But some witnesses said that the Israeli military shot at the crowd.

The evacuation cuts access between the city of Deir al-Balah and the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis in the narrow enclave.

The announcement came as Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar, but international mediators say there have been no breakthroughs.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that expanding Israel's military operations in Gaza will pressure Hamas to negotiate, but negotiations have been stalled for months.

Earlier this month, the Israeli military said that it controlled more than 65% of the Gaza Strip.

STORYLINE:

Syrian Bedouin fighters vowed on Sunday to resume fighting against Druze fighters in Sweida if Hikmat Al-Hijri, the leader of Druze fighters, does not comply with the ceasefire agreement.

Syria's armed Bedouin clans on Sunday announced that they had withdrawn from Sweida following over a week of clashes and a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, as humanitarian aid convoys started to enter the battered southern city.

Khalid Al-Mohammad, a Deir Ez-Zor fighter who joined the Bedouin fighters in Sweida to fight the Druze, said that he will not return home unless Al Hijri surrenders.

The clashes between militias of the Druze religious minority and the Sunni Muslim clans killed hundreds and threatened to unravel Syria's already fragile postwar transition.

Israel also launched dozens of airstrikes in the Druze-majority Sweida province, targeting government forces who had effectively sided with the Bedouins.

A series of tit-for-tat kidnappings sparked the clashes in various towns and villages in the province, which later spread to the city. Government forces were redeployed to halt renewed fighting that erupted Thursday, before withdrawing again.

Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was more sympathetic to the Bedouins, had tried to appeal to the Druze community while remaining critical of the militias.

He later urged the Bedouins to leave the city, saying that they “cannot replace the role of the state in handling the country’s affairs and restoring security.”

D-Day veteran 'Papa Jake' Larson, who survived German gunfire on Normandy's bluffs in 1944 and garnered 1.2 million followers on TikTok late in life by sharing stories to commemorate World War II and his fallen comrades, has died at 102.

Tributes for “Story Time with Papa Jake" poured in from followers across the US, where he had been living in Lafayette, CA., and from towns around Normandy still grateful to Allied forces who helped defeat the occupying Nazis.

"Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young," his granddaughter McKaela Larson posted on his social media accounts.

"He went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end.″

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba arrived at the headquarters of his Liberal Democratic Party on Sunday after exit polls showed his ruling coalition is likely to lose a majority in the smaller of Japan's two parliamentary houses in a key election.

Voters were deciding half of the 248 seats in the upper house, the less powerful of the two chambers in Japan's Diet.

Ishiba has set the bar low, wanting a simple majority of 125 seats, which means his LDP and Komeito Liberal Democratic Party and its Buddhist-backed junior coalition partner Komeito need to win 50 to add to the 75 seats they already have.

That is a big retreat from the 141 seats they had pre-election, but media surveys predict big setbacks for Ishiba.

Exit poll results released seconds after the ballots closed Sunday night mostly showed a major setback for Ishiba’s coalition. Japan’s NHK television projected a range of 32-51 seats for the prime minister's coalition, while other networks projected it would win just over 40 seats.

A poor performance in the election would not immediately trigger a change of government because the upper house lacks the power to file a no-confidence motion against a leader, but it would certainly deepen uncertainty over his fate and Japan’s political stability.

Ishiba would face calls from within the LDP party to step down or find another coalition partner.

Soaring prices, lagging incomes and burdensome social security payments are the top issues for frustrated, cash-strapped voters. Stricter measures targeting foreign residents and visitors have also emerged as a key issue, with a surging right-wing populist party leading the campaign.

Sunday's vote comes after Ishiba's coalition lost a majority in the October lower house election, stung by past corruption scandals, and his unpopular government has since been forced into making concessions to the opposition to get legislation through parliament. It has been unable to quickly deliver effective measures to mitigate rising prices, including Japan's traditional staple of rice, and dwindling wages.

The beaches of Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia are a prized tourist destination, but scientists are warning that they are shrinking rapidly due to coastal erosion.

The Barcelona Metropolitan Authority (AMB) said some are receding as much as a metre each year.

One of them is at Montgat, a commuter town for the city as well as a holiday attraction.

Located about 14 kilometres north east of Barcelona, it makes it a popular choice for commuting workers as well as visitors looking for a beach holiday.

The new seaside at the Catalan regional capital has helped Barcelona turn into one of Europe’s tourism hotspots.

As a result, places such as Montgat turned from small fishing villages to popular summer destinations among locals and tourists alike.

But they could be all in danger. The current climate is causing severe storms which are gradually destroying beaches according to the Barcelona Metropolitan Authority.

Andreu Absil has been the mayor of Montgat since 2020.
