A explosion at a Los Angeles law enforcement training facility early Friday that killed three deputies was being investigated as a possible training accident, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the deputies were members of the arson and explosives unit, a team that goes through in-depth training and responds to more than 1,000 calls a year.

“They have years of training,” he said. “They are fantastic experts and, unfortunately, I lost three of them today.”

The explosion was reported about 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Facility, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida said. It was not immediately known what caused the explosion or what the deputies were doing at the time.

Luna said it took more than fours to rendered the scene safe and the deaths are being investigated by the department’s homicide detectives, who are being assisted by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

An early line of investigation was looking at a possible training accident, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter who was not authorized to discuss it and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

In a post on X, Attorney General Pam Bondi said the explosion "appears to be a horrific incident” and federal agents are at the scene to learn more.

“Please pray for the families of the sheriff’s deputies killed,” Bondi wrote.

Top church leaders in Jerusalem headed into Gaza Friday in a rare solidarity visit to the territory one day after an Israeli shell slammed into its only Catholic church, killing three people.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III prayed together at the Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius and later paid a visit to the wounded at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City.

The Patriarchs also visited the Holy Family Catholic Church, which was struck in the attack.

The delegation was also planning on sending hundreds of tons of food aid, medical supplies and equipment to families inside Gaza, the patriarchate said, adding they also had "ensured evacuation" of individuals injured in the attack to hospitals outside Gaza.

The attack drew condemnation from world leaders and religious figures.

Pope Leo XIV on Thursday renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in response to the attack and President Donald Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express his frustration.

Israel on Thursday expressed regret over what it described as an accident and said it was investigating.

The visit by religious leaders on Friday marked a rare entrance to the territory by a delegation of outsiders.

Dozens of South African chefs, community cooks, caterers, and culinary students joined forces in a "souper-human" effort on Friday in Johannesburg to make 67,000 liters (17,700 gallons) of soup to feed the hungry, in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day.

First officially recognized by the United Nations in 2009, International Nelson Mandela Day encourages people to commemorate the birthday and legacy of South Africa’s first Black president by volunteering for 67 minutes, which is equivalent to his 67 years of public service.

To mark the birthday of South Africa’s former head of state, who was born in 1918, cooks all over the country made soup in their own kitchens to contribute toward reaching the target.

Despite the numbers of cooks taking part, they didn't seem concerned about spoiling the broth.

Every year, South Africans volunteer their time on July 18, cleaning up public spaces, helping at schools or hospitals, or performing humanitarian work and making donations.

Merchants protested on Friday at Sao Paulo's 25 de Março street against U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods.

The street where the demonstration was held was cited in a U.S. report as a location where counterfeit product sales were being made.

Street vendors, union leaders, and leftist activists organized the demonstration, accusing the U.S. government of attacking Brazilian workers and interfering with the country's economy.

"We are fighting for our survival, and the American government has no right to come here and try to dictate what happens in our country. Brazil is a sovereign, democratic nation and deserves respect," said José Nildo, 56, a local street vendor who showed his support for the protest.

A school in Colombia’s capital has become an unlikely refuge for dozens of rescued dogs, offering them not only a second chance at life, but a home filled with affection.

At the Delia Zapata Olivella School in northeastern Bogotá, the program “Four-Legged Friends” has been operating for several years.

Since its inception, it has rescued and rehomed more than 580 dogs, many of them victims of abuse and neglect.

Each morning, the dogs eagerly await the arrival of the students, who hug and care for them as part of their daily routine.

Inside a tent set up on school grounds, children learn the basics of dog training, practice yoga alongside the animals, and offer them the love they were once denied.

The school’s animal shelter, which has received recognition from Bogotá’s City Hall, has been described as a pioneering effort in the development of an “animal rights classroom.”

The project began with a single dog rescued from the streets by students and a supportive teacher.

The animal, later named Mickey, refused to eat.

When taken to a vet, it was discovered that his snout had been sealed shut with an industrial stapler.

After three surgeries, Mickey survived—and became the first official rescue of the initiative.

No one was hurt in the fire, organizers said. The causes are being investigated.

Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world attend Tomorrowland's annual multi-day festival outside the Belgian town of Boom.

Some 38,000 people were camping at the festival site Friday, a Tomorrowland spokesperson said.
