STORYLINE:

Clan fighters gathered in Syrian capital Damascus on Saturday to support Bedouin militants in their clashes with Druze armed factions in the southern province of Sweida despite calls for a ceasefire.

Supporters and members of Bedouin groups mobilized from other parts of Syria to join the fight.

Mohammad Tarrad said he came from Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in eastern Syria, to support Bedouin clans.

“We, the sons of the clans, came to support them with our own ammunition, no one gave us any ammunition,” Tarrad said.

Another clan fighter, Taher Al Ahmad said, “we don't want to destroy, but we will show people our mercy before we demonstrate our strength that will be against those who belong to Al-Hijri group", in reference to Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri, a Druze religious leader opposed to the new government in Damascus.

US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said early Saturday that Israel and Syria had agreed to a ceasefire following Israel’s intervention this week between Syrian government forces and rival armed groups.

Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa said he would send troops back to quell the fighting, which left tens of thousands of people displaced.

Clashes began on Sunday between Druze militias and local Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes in Syria’s southern Sweida province.

Government forces intervened, nominally to restore order, but ended up taking the Bedouins’ side against the Druze.

Israel intervened in defense of the Druze, launching dozens of airstrikes on convoys of government fighters and even striking the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in central Damascus.

The Druze form a substantial community in Israel, where they are seen as a loyal minority and often serve in the Israeli military.

Emergency services lined up the road by the Los Angeles County Coroners Office, saluting as a procession carrying the bodies of the three deputies killed earlier on Friday drove past them.

A blast at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility killed three members of its arson and explosives unit, marking one of the department's worst losses of life from a single incident, the sheriff said.

All three were veteran deputies. The department hasn’t said what they were doing at the time of the blast or what caused it.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the arson and explosives team undergoes in-depth training and responds to more than 1,000 calls a year. The deputies had served 19, 22 and 33 years in the department, Luna said.

The explosion was reported about 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Facility, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida said.

An early line of investigation was looking at a possible training accident, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter who was not authorized to discuss it and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Venezuelan top officials on Friday welcomed a flight with hundreds of migrants previously deported from the U.S. and imprisoned in El Salvador.

Diosdado Cabello, Venezuelan Interior Minister, thanked former Spanish President, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who served as an intermediary for the agreement between the U.S. Salvadoran and Venezualan governments.

Cabello was accompanied by the government's chief negotiator, Jorge Rodriguez, and Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez.

The 252 Venezuelans who arrived Friday to La Guaira airport, were released in exchange for 10 Americans jailed in Venezuela.

The Venezuelans have been held in a mega-prison known as the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, which was built to hold alleged gang members in El Salvador war on the country’s gangs.

Cabello denounced that the Venezuelans were shot during their confinement and showed rubber bullets while migrants walked through the runway.

El Salvador is sending back some 300 Venezuelan migrants deported by the United States to El Salvador months ago under the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

In exchange, Venezuela has released 10 jailed Americans in an arrangement that represents a diplomatic achievement for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and helps President Donald Trump in his goal of bringing home Americans jailed abroad.

The Trump administration had agreed to pay $6 million to house the deported migrants in a notorious Salvadoran prison.

The arrangement drew immediate blowback when Trump invoked an 18th century wartime law to quickly remove men his administration had accused of belonging to the violent Tren de Aragua street gang.
