STORYLINE:

A vehicle rammed into a crowd of people waiting to enter a nightclub along a busy boulevard in Los Angeles early Saturday, injuring 30 people and leading bystanders to attack the driver, authorities said.

The driver was later found to have been shot, according to Los Angeles police, who were searching for a suspected gunman who fled the scene.

It was not immediately clear if the driver had been shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

Twenty-three victims were transported to local hospitals and trauma centers, according to police.

At least three were in critical condition after being injured along Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, the Los Angeles City Fire Department said in a statement.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party rallied in the capital on Saturday.

They gathered to show their strength ahead of elections expected next year, as the nation stands at a crossroads after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ahead of the march, Jamaat-e-Islami said it aimed to mobilize 1 million people on Saturday.

Thousands of supporters spent the night on the Dhaka University campus before the rally.

On Saturday morning, they streamed toward the Suhrawardy Udyan.

The historical ground is where the Pakistani army surrendered to a joint force of India and Bangladesh on Dec. 16 in 1971, ending the nine-month war.

Jamaat-e-Islami sided with Pakistan during Bangladesh's war of independence.

It was the first time the party was allowed to hold a rally on this ground since 1971.

To many, the decision signaled a shift supported by the interim government headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, in which Islamists are gaining momentum with further fragmentation of Bangladesh’s politics and shrinking of liberal forces.

During the rally, party leaders placed a seven-point demand to the interim government: to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election, the trial of all mass killings, essential reforms and proclamation and implementation of a charter involving last year’s mass uprising.

They also called for the introduction of a proportional representation system in the election.

Yunus has said the next election will be held in April, but his administration has not ruled out a possibility of polls in February as strongly demanded by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies.

While Hasina was in power from 2009 until she was toppled in student-led protests last year and fled to India, top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami were either executed or jailed on charges of crimes against humanity and other serious crimes in 1971.

Hasina, whose father was the independence leader and the country’s first president, is a fierce political rival of Jamaat-e-Islami.

A lawyer for the maker of the video game "Call of Duty" argued Friday that a judge should dismiss a lawsuit brought by families of the victims of the Robb Elementary School attack in Uvalde, Texas, saying the contents of the war game are protected by the First Amendment.

The families sued "Call of Duty" maker Activision and Meta Platforms, which owns Instagram, saying that the companies bear responsibility for promoting products used by the teen gunman.

Activision lawyer Bethany Kristovich told Superior Court Judge William Highberger that the “First Amendment bars their claims, period, full stop.”

She argued that the case has little chance of prevailing if it continues, because courts have repeatedly held that “creators of artistic works, whether they be books, music, movies, TV or video games, cannot be held legally liable for the acts of their audience.”

An attorney for the families argued during the hearing that "Call of Duty" exceeds its First Amendment protections by moving into marketing.

More explosions and plumes of smoke were seen in the Gaza Strip on Saturday as Israel continued its military operation there.

Israel's army on Saturday said it had struck some 90 targets throughout Gaza over the past day.

It claimed it had killed militants and targeted “terror infrastructure” in northern Gaza and Gaza City.

The Hamas militant group triggered the ongoing 21-month war in Gaza when it stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Some 1,200 people were killed in the assault and another 250 were taken hostage.

Israel launched a military offensive in response, which has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The Gaza ministry does not say how many militants were among the dead, but says over half of the victims were women and children.

The war has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million people and caused widespread destruction.

Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar in recent weeks.

International mediators, however, say there have been no breakthroughs in the talks.

STORYLINE:

The stacks of boxes with their distinctive circular windows were a local landmark in Ginza District.

Each was a 'micro-dwelling', a tiny home just about big enough for one.

The Nakagin Capsule Tower was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa and was added to Tokyo's skyline in 1972.

In 2022, the building was demolished - but it wasn't the end for all its mini homes.

Of the 140 single-occupancy capsules, 14 have been salvaged, including this one.

It's travelled all the way to New York to go on display in the Museum of Modern Art's street-level galleries.

Inside, it's been restored to its original condition, complete with compact bathroom and electronics that would have been cutting edge in their day.

"This was a radical experiment in urban living in Tokyo in Japan," said Evangelos Kotsioris, assistant curator in architecture and design at MoMA.

|It was intended for people to be able to spend the night in Tokyo, especially if they were workers or salaryman. Instead of commuting to the suburbs in the evening," explained Kotsioris.

The way in which the building was used evolved over the decades, with rooms becoming student quarters, tea rooms, libraries and even DJ booths.

Tatsuyuki Maeda was one of the tower's residents - his office was close by.

He owned 15 capsules which he rented out.

"A community was created around this building which had its own charm. Many creative people, of course, some architects as well, were around, and I very much enjoyed the community and my capsule life," he said.

Relatives of the remaining Israeli hostages being held in the Gaza Strip called once again for a ceasefire and a comprehensive hostage release deal during their weekly statements on Saturday.

The family members urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree with U.S. President Donald Trump's ceasefire vision.

"After 652 days, it is time to do what is right for Israel: bring all 50 hostages home and end this war," said Efrat Machikawa, a relative of released hostage Gadi Moses.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack which triggered the war and abducted 251 people, most of whom have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed over 58,600 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead.

It does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its tally.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government but is led by medical professionals.

The United Nations and other international organizations consider its figures to be the most reliable count of war casualties.

So out of the 30 patients, we transported a total of 23 of those patients. “It was a very chaotic scene on arrival,” Van Gerpen said. “Initially, there was so many people here our firefighters had to triage.”

People inside the club came out to help in the minutes before emergency crews arrived, he said, to help the victims.

STORYLINE:

Israeli troops opened fire Saturday toward crowds of Palestinians seeking food from distribution hubs run by a U.S.-Israeli-backed group in southern Gaza, killing at least 32 people, according to witnesses and hospital officials.

The dead and injured were brought to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

The two incidents occurred near hubs operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Most of Saturday’s deaths occurred as Palestinians massed in the Teina area, around three kilometers (two miles) away from a GHF aid distribution center east of the city of Khan Younis.

Sanaa al-Jaberi, an eyewitness, said the gates to the food hub had been opened and as the crowd started advancing, troops opened fire.

Akram Aker, another witness, said troops fired machine guns mounted on tanks and drones. Both said the shooting happened around 6 a.m. (local time).

The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said it received 25 bodies, along with dozens of wounded.

Seven other people, including one woman, were killed in the Shakoush area, hundreds of meters (yards) north of another GHF hub in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah, the hospital said.

The toll was also confirmed by the health ministry.

Dr. Mohamed Saker, the head of Nasser's nursing department, said it received 70 wounded people. He told The Associated Press that most of the casualties were shot in their heads and chests.

"The number of martyrs is likely to increase,” he said, adding that the facility lacks badly needed medical supplies to treat the daily flow of casualties.

In other violence, 11 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes into Saturday, health officials said.

The GHF launched operations in late May with backing from the U.S. and Israel.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party rallied in the capital on Saturday to show their strength ahead of elections expected next year, as the South Asian nation stands at a crossroads after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ahead of the march, Jamaat-e-Islami said it aimed to mobilize 1 million people on Saturday.

Thousands of supporters spent the night on the Dhaka University campus before the rally.

On Saturday morning, they streamed toward the Suhrawardy Udyan, a historical ground where the Pakistani army had surrendered to a joint force of India and Bangladesh on Dec. 16 in 1971, ending the nine-month war.

Jamaat-e-Islami sided with Pakistan during Bangladesh's war of independence.

It was the first time the party was allowed to hold a rally on this ground since 1971.

To many, the decision signaled a shift supported by the interim government headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, in which Islamists are gaining momentum with further fragmentation of Bangladesh’s politics and shrinking of liberal forces.

During the rally, party leaders placed a seven-point demand to the interim government: to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election, the trial of all mass killings, essential reforms and proclamation and implementation of a charter involving last year’s mass uprising.

They also called for the introduction of a proportional representation system in the election.

Yunus has said the next election will be held in April, but his administration has not ruled out a possibility of polls in February as strongly demanded by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies.
