STORYLINE:

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the Georgian capital on Saturday to reinforce their demand for new parliamentary elections.

Last year's decision by the ruling Georgian Dream party to halt Georgia’s bid to join the European Union continues to spark protests across the country.

Demonstrators gather in Tbilisi on a daily basis to rally against the government's decision.

They also argue that the election on Oct. 26 that handed Georgian Dream another term in power was not free or fair.

Protesters and the country’s opposition have declared the result illegitimate amid allegations of vote-rigging helped by Russia.

Georgian Dream has seen widespread condemnation by European leaders and rights groups over its rough handling of protesters and perceived democratic backsliding.

Last month, four key opposition figures were jailed within days as part of a monthslong crackdown on dissent that followed the disputed election.

Nearly all leaders of Georgia’s pro-Western opposition are now behind bars.

Crowds gathered for their weekly rally at Hostage Square on Saturday before marching towards the Tel Aviv branch of the US Embassy to call for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza and a deal to return the remaining hostages.

Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar in recent weeks. But international mediators say there has been no breakthrough.

The Israeli military offensive has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million people and caused widespread destruction.

Hamas triggered the ongoing 21-month war in Gaza when it stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage.

Explosions and smoke could be seen from the Gaza Strip late Saturday, as Israel continues its offensive.

The Israeli army said it had struck some 90 targets throughout Gaza over the past day and that it had killed militants and targeted “terror infrastructure” in northern Gaza and Gaza City.

Hamas triggered the 21-month war when militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage.

Fifty remain, but fewer than half are thought to be alive.

Israel's military offensive has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn't say how many militants are among the dead.

The ministry, which says more than half of the dead have been women and children, is part of the Hamas government.

But the U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar, but international mediators say there have been no breakthroughs.

Displaced Palestinians in a neighborhood in Gaza City fear a looming disaster from an overflow of a contaminated rainwater reservoir.

The Gaza Municipality warned this past week that fuel supplies are needed to avert the potential overflow of the Sheikh Radwan water collection pond as the water level continues to rise.

The reservoir is typically used to collect rainwater but it has been contaminated throughout the war, which has severely damaged infrastructure across the Gaza Strip.

“We’re scared the boy would fall and drown in the sewage or get harmed by mosquitos or something. The entire area is dangerous,” said Atef al-Batsh a man displaced from Jabalia along with 30 family members.

The al-Batsh family was displaced multiple times, moving through school-turned shelters after their home was destroyed, before eventually settling in tents in Sheikh Radwan.

AP footage shows the reservoir surrounded by debris, rubble, and damaged buildings, set amid displacement tents.

Nearby, people laid out dried beans, basic cooking utensils, and hung laundry on makeshift lines.

The United Nations estimates that more than 87,000 people have been displaced in Syria's Sweida province since July 12 due to days of heavy fighting between Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes and Druze-linked militias that has left hundreds dead.

The violence that threatens to unravel the country’s post-war transition continued on Saturday, and smoke was seen rising from burning homes and vehicles, and many shops and residential buildings appeared badly damaged.

Scores of tribal fighters from various Syrian provinces have travelled to Sweida to support their Bedouin kin.

One of them, Abdulaziz Al Aziz from Deir Ez-zor, said he came in order to help "lift the oppression and the persecution" of his brethren.

Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Saturday urged the Bedouin tribes to “fully commit” to a ceasefire aimed at ending the violence.

Meanwhile, prominent Druze leader Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri said that an agreement brokered under the sponsorship of guarantor states contained several measures aimed at de-escalating tensions in Sweida.

They include the deployment of checkpoints outside the province’s administrative borders to contain clashes and prevent infiltration, a 48-hour ban on entry by any party into border villages, and safe, guaranteed passage for remaining members of the Bedouin tribes still inside the province.

Al-Hijri opposes the current government and has distanced himself from the two ceasefires announced on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the violence has forced entire communities to flee on foot.

Many are now crammed into overcrowded schools, churches and public buildings under dire conditions, it said in a report, adding that infrastructure damage cut electricity, water and telecommunications in much of the area.
