"So initially there was so many people here our firefighters had to triage. There was bystanders, were helping each other out because there's so many patients. So we had a help of LAPD. There's about 25 LAPD officers ultimately showed up on scene. We had 124 firefighters who came here to assist with this, what we call is a mass casualty incident."

"So out of the 30 patients, we transported a total of 23 of those patients. Seven of them were in critical condition, another six were delayed or had other serious injuries as well and then 10 were transported with minor injuries. There was another seven patients that signed out against medical advice and remained on scene. But this was a very chaotic scene and we were able to utilize our triage system, where we put them into different categories. Our partners with LAPD helped us to triage and put people into different categories. And then we had an ambulance staging area set up so that we could rapidly transport the most critical patient."

STORYLINE:

A vehicle rammed into a crowd of people waiting to enter a nightclub along a busy boulevard in Los Angeles early Saturday, injuring 30 people.

Victims were transported to local hospitals and trauma centers, according to Capt. Adam Van Gerpen, public information officer for the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

At least three were in critical condition after being injured along Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, the Fire Department said in a statement.

Van Gerpen said that a line of people — the majority female — were waiting to enter a nightclub when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a taco truck and valet stand.

Paramedics discovered that one of the patients had a gunshot wound, Van Gerpen said.

He told The Associated Press that the identity of that person was not yet known.

STORYLINE:

More explosions and plumes of smoke were seen in the Gaza Strip on Saturday as Israel continued its military operation there.

Israel's army on Saturday said it had struck some 90 targets throughout Gaza over the past day.

It claimed it had killed militants and targeted “terror infrastructure” in northern Gaza and Gaza City.

The Hamas militant group triggered the ongoing 21-month war in Gaza when it stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Some 1,200 people were killed in the assault and another 250 were taken hostage.

Israel launched a military offensive in response, which has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The Gaza ministry does not say how many militants were among the dead, but says over half of the victims were women and children.

The war has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million people and caused widespread destruction.

Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar in recent weeks.

International mediators, however, say there have been no breakthroughs in the talks.

Huckabee, an evangelical Christian who is normally strongly supportive of Israel, harshly condemned the attack.

“It is an act of terror and it's a crime,” he said. “It is one of the last bastions of our civilization, the places we worship.”

The West Bank has experienced a surge in settler violence since the Israel-Hamas war broke out.

The West Bank has also seen the Israeli military targeting militants in large-scale operations that have killed hundreds of Palestinians and displaced tens of thousands.

The Christian community in Israel and the Palestinian territories has dwindled as a percentage of the overall population over the decades, with experts citing lower birthrates and emigration by people fleeing conflict or seeking better opportunities abroad.

STORYLINE:

Syrian government forces were being redeployed Saturday to the southern province of Sweida to halt renewed fighting between armed Bedouin tribesmen and Druze-linked militias.

Convoys of security forces were seen on the highway between Damascus and Daraa in the south, waiting for instructions.

“The internal security forces are gathering to enter Sweida province to prevail security and safety, and to settle the dispute between the Arab tribes and outlaws, to protect the state’s institutions and protect civilians and innocent children and to protect all sects,” said security officer Yousef Al Ahmad.

The violence left hundreds dead and threatened to unravel the country’s post-war transition.

Government forces were initially sent to restore order but effectively sided with the Bedouins against the Druze.

This prompted airstrikes against Syrian forces by neighboring Israel, before a truce was reached.

Israel had launched dozens of airstrikes on convoys of government fighters and even struck the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in central Damascus, saying it was in support of the Druze, who form a substantial community in Israel and are seen as a loyal minority, often serving in the Israeli military.

Also Saturday, Syria’s interim President urged Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes to “fully commit” to the ceasefire, and blamed Israeli intervention for pushing Syria “into a dangerous phase."

Reports had surfaced of Syrian government-affiliated fighters executing Druze civilians and looting and burning homes over the four-day violence.

U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, announced that Israel and Syria had agreed to a ceasefire early Saturday.

More than half of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria. Most of the other Druze live in Lebanon and Israel, including in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed in 1981.

STORYLINE:

Clan fighters gathered in the Syrian capital Damascus on Saturday to support Bedouin militants in their clashes with Druze armed factions in the southern province of Sweida despite calls for a ceasefire.

Supporters and members of Bedouin groups mobilized from other parts of Syria to join the fight.

Mohammad Tarrad said he came from Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in eastern Syria, to support Bedouin clans.

“We, the sons of the clans, came to support them with our own ammunition, no one gave us any ammunition,” Tarrad said.

Another clan fighter, Taher al-Ahmad said, that the clans came "not to enter Sweida, to destroy and to strike..our issue is with those who support Al-Hijri," in reference to Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri, a Druze religious leader opposed to the new government in Damascus.

US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said early Saturday that Israel and Syria had agreed to a ceasefire following Israel’s intervention this week between Syrian government forces and rival armed groups.

Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa said he would send troops back to quell the fighting, which left tens of thousands of people displaced.

Clashes began on Sunday between Druze militias and local Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes in Syria’s southern Sweida province.

Government forces intervened, nominally to restore order, but ended up taking the Bedouins’ side against the Druze.

Israel intervened in defense of the Druze, launching dozens of airstrikes on convoys of government fighters and even striking the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in central Damascus.

The Druze form a substantial community in Israel, where they are seen as a loyal minority and often serve in the Israeli military.
