STORYLINE:

Liberia is bringing women together through the unique sport of kickball - a mix of soccer and baseball.

Kickball has become the second most popular sport in the country, and the national league is fuelling even more popularity.

A member of the Girls of Aries team, Saydah A. Yarbah, says the sport is "traditional".

“We’ve been playing this game from childhood, so we have grown, we have grown passion for this game. This game brings us together, our young people, young girls. It made us leave some other bad activities, we come around, play kickball, get to know new friends. So this is what I like about kickball.”

Kickball was founded in the 1960s by Cherry Jackson, a Peace Corps volunteer, who was teaching in an all-girls school in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city.

Jackson noticed that, unlike the boys, her students didn't play sports.

Its now played everywhere from schoolyards to public squares and dirt fields.

Liberia's National Kickball League, only for women, was created in 1994 to bring people together after a ravaging civil war.

Emmanuel Whea is the President of the Liberia Kickball Federation, and says the game bonded communities which had been split by the conflict.

“We had just left the civil war, and everybody had just scattered. We needed to bring them together before the peace messages could be given out.”

STORYLINE:

Hunched over his workbench, Tan Chin Seng shaves the wooden top plate of a violin, removing thin layers with slow, deliberate strokes. The work is meditative, out of the public eye. For Tan, transforming raw wood into a violin is a labour of artistry and love.

The 45-year-old is Malaysia’s first professional violin maker. Over the past decade, he has earned international accolades. Now, he mentors a new generation of makers in a field still little-known here in Southeast Asia.

Traditionally, luthiers - makers of string instruments like violins and cellos - are associated with Europe, where masters like Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri shaped the modern violin. The craft has spread globally, with thriving communities now in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Tan’s path to violin-making was unconventional. A computer science graduate who doesn’t play the violin, he was helping in his family’s food business and co-owned a music school. In 2010, a trip to China to restore an aging violin sparked a deeper fascination with the instrument’s construction.

Curiosity led him to apprentice with Chinese luthier Han Zhao Sheng, and he built his first violin.

“At first, it was just that I find it really interesting, why not just make one violin? It's just that after completing the first violin, I knew this craft is for me, and I like it a lot," says Tan.

“Everything about the process, you know, there is woodworking, carpentry, artistic thing, there is chemistry, acoustics, physics, everything about violin-making I like it. Also turning wood into musical instruments is just amazing.”

STORYLINE:

The cemetery of La Tirana town, in the desertic region of Northern Chile, on Thursday filled with Catholic devotees dressed as "Devils', who danced and marched to pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.

They were taking in the celebrations of Our Lady of Carmen, Chile's patron saint.

Every July, thousands of devotees and visitors gather in La Tirana for ten days, with the peak of the celebration taking place on July 16th, when many danced in costumes through the night to mark the day of the patron.

Thursday's celebrations are reserved for the deceased relatives, and the younger generations said their devotion is feeding a new tradition that they learned from their elders.

The “Devils" gathering represents the battle between good and evil, with the Catholic and Andean traditions embedded into one colorful festival.

"La Diablada," as the gathering is locally known, started to be celebrated in the mid-20th century, fusing elements of the Oruro Carnival, in Bolivia.

Since then, residents have been adding new elements to the festivities, with the procession to the cemetery being the most recent one.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Liberians took to the streets of Monrovia under the slogan "enough is enough" on Thursday, calling for accountability from the administration of President Joseph Boakai.

Boakai, who came into office last year, ran on a campaign to clear up governance and improve living conditions for ordinary Liberians.

Protesters say those promises have not been fulfilled.

“I am in the street to remind my government of their past promises that they made to we, the Liberian people," protester and businesswoman Victoria Roberts told the Associated Press.

“How can you say that you came to better the lives of the people, but then you came and took people from jobs? Is that what you call betterment?”

Opposition figure Mulbah Morlu, a former chair of ex-president George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change party, is leading the protest movement.

The demonstrators will make their way through the capital to the presidential palace to deliver a petition, Morlu said on local radio.

Among their concerns are the establishment of a special court dedicated to investigating war crimes, restoration of the rule of law, and redress for what they described as politically motivated dismissals by the government.

Monrovia’s normally busy streets were visibly quieter as many residents stayed home out of concern the protest could turn chaotic.

Protests and events against President Donald Trump's controversial policies that include mass deportations and cuts to Medicaid and other safety nets for poor people have started Thursday at more than 1,600 locations around the country.

In New York, the New York City Good Trouble team held a "Good Trouble Lives On" protest Thursday afternoon, beginning at Foley Square. Protesters marched around 26 Federal Plaza carrying signs and chanting slogans such as "No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here" and "No ICE, no KKK, no fascists, USA." The demonstration included singing, a moment of silence, and a display of a portrait of civil rights leader John Lewis.

The “Good Trouble Lives On” national day of action honors the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis. Protests were being held along streets, at court houses and other public spaces. Organizers have called for them to be peaceful.

Major protests were planned in Atlanta and St. Louis, as well as Oakland, California, and Annapolis, Maryland.

Lewis first was elected to Congress in 1986. He died in 2020 at the age of 80 following an advanced pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

He was the youngest and last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1965, a 25-year-old Lewis led some 600 protesters in the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Lewis was beaten by police, suffering a skull fracture.

Within days, King led more marches in the state, and President Lyndon Johnson pressed Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act that later became law.

“Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and redeem the soul of America,” Lewis said in 2020 while commemorating the 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Liberia's beautiful game isn't quite soccer, it's kickball, a mixture of football and baseball which is played by women and watched by everyone.

It's been credited with giving women a common bond in the country with a history of civil war and bitter divisions.

STORYLINE:

It's just before kick off and the Girls of Aries get the adrenaline going with a team song. The Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia is full of anticipation.

This is kickball, a mix of football and baseball.

It's played with the feet, not bats as in baseball, and there are no men involved.

As play gets underway, the ball flies in the air to the plate but is kicked away in the nick of time.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of Liberians took to the streets of Monrovia under the slogan "enough is enough" on Thursday, calling for accountability from the administration of President Joseph Boakai.

Boakai, who came into office last year, ran on a campaign to clear up governance and improve living conditions for ordinary Liberians.

Protesters say those promises have not been fulfilled.

“I am in the street to remind my government of their past promises that they made to we, the Liberian people," protester and businesswoman Victoria Roberts told the Associated Press.

“How can you say that you came to better the lives of the people, but then you came and took people from jobs? Is that what you call betterment?”

Opposition figure Mulbah Morlu, a former chair of ex-president George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change party, is leading the protest movement.

The demonstrators will make their way through the capital to the presidential palace to deliver a petition, Morlu said on local radio.

Among their concerns are the establishment of a special court dedicated to investigating war crimes, restoration of the rule of law, and redress for what they described as politically motivated dismissals by the government.
