Bruce Springsteen will take the stage as both performer and a guest of honor at one of Hollywood's most prominent fundraising events, the Academy Museum Gala.

The 75-year-old rock legend is being honored alongside actors Penélope Cruz and Bowen Yang and filmmaker Walter Salles at the Oct. 18 celebration hosted by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

The high-fashion get-together, now in its fifth year, has been positioned as a West Coast version of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's Met Gala. It features a massive red carpet with a slew of celebrities from Hollywood and beyond, raising money for the Los Angeles museum's exhibits and education programs.

Gala co-chairs include Jon M. Chu, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. The host committee includes Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, Adrien Brody, Zoë Kravitz, Demi Moore, Colman Domingo, Ke Huy Quan, Meg Ryan and Amy Adams.

STORYLINE:

The funeral of two Christians killed by an Israeli strike took place late Thursday in Gaza City. They were two of three victims who died then a Israeli shell slammed into the compound of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, wounding 10 others, including the parish priest, according to church officials.

The late Pope Francis, who died in April, had regularly spoken to the priest about the situation in the war-ravaged territory.

The shelling of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza also damaged the church compound, where hundreds of Palestinians have been sheltering from the 21-month Israel-Hamas war. Israel issued a rare apology and said it was investigating.

Later in the day the bodies were taken to the Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius, where the funeral was performed.

The three people killed by the Israeli attack were Christian Orthodox living at the Holy Family Church together with dozens of others displaced.

Mossa Ayyad, a displaced Christian, living within the church compound, witnessed the attack, stressing that "all the displaced people in the church being terrified and afraid."

The church compound was sheltering both Christians and Muslims, including a number of children with disabilities, according to Fadel Naem, acting director of Al-Ahli Hospital, which received the casualties.

The Catholic charity Caritas Jerusalem said the parish’s 60-year-old janitor and an 84-year-old woman receiving psychosocial support inside a Caritas tent in the church compound were killed in the attack.

Parish priest Romanelli was lightly wounded.

Pope Leo XIV on Thursday renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in response to the attack.

"My office, D.A. Hockman, has filed three charges, two charges of murder and one charge of burglary, first degree burglory, residential with person present. We have also filed special circumstances with respect to the murders. The first special circumstance is for double murder, or what we call multiple murder. And the second special circumstance, is felony murder, which is murder committed during the course of a burglery. In addition, our DA filed gun enhancements. Which in this case means that there was a use of a firearm that was discharged causing great bodily injury or death."

STORYLINE:

Los Angeles prosecutors on Thursday charged a 22-year-old man with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of a longtime music supervisor for “American Idol" and her husband at their home.

Police said officers conducting a welfare check Monday at a gated house in the Encino neighborhood found the bodies of a woman and man with gunshot wounds. The victims were later identified as Robin Kaye and Thomas Deluca, both 70.

Raymond Boodarian, an Encino resident, was arrested Tuesday afternoon, police said. Investigators believe Boodarian was burglarizing the residence on July 10 while the couple was away and shot them when they suddenly returned home.

Boodarian faces charges including murder and first-degree burglary, Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams told reporters on Thursday. Arraignment was scheduled for August 20.

Boodarian could not be reached for comment. Messages were sent to the public defender’s office inquiring if one of its attorneys was representing him.

Kaye had been with “American Idol,” the hit singing competition TV series, for more than 15 years and was working on the upcoming season at the time of her death.

Court records show Boodarian was arrested in 2024 for alleged battery, exhibiting a deadly weapon and threatening to commit a crime with the intent to terrorize. Charges were later dismissed.

The organization has been one of the most visible critics of Bukele, documenting abuses in the strongman’s war on the country’s gangs and the detention of hundreds of Venezuelan deportees in an agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Bukele’s government has long targeted opponents, but Cristosal Executive Director Noah Bullock said things reached a tipping point in recent months as Bukele has grown empowered by his alliance with Trump.

"Cristosal is being forced to suspend its operations in El Salvador and operate from its headquarters in Honduras and Guatemala," Bullock said in a press conference in Guatemala City.
