STORYLINE:

Smoke was seen rising above the Gaza skyline on Thursday evening after another day of Israeli strikes.

The Israel military struck the compound of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, killing three people and wounding 10 others, including the parish priest who was an acquaintance of the late Pope Francis.

Separately, another person was killed and 17 wounded in a strike against two schools sheltering displaced people in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to Al-Awda Hospital.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike.

The Gaza Health Ministry said that over the past 24 hours, local hospitals received the bodies of 94 people killed in Israeli strikes and another 367 wounded.

There has been little visible progress in months of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas aimed at a new ceasefire and hostage release agreement, after Israel ended an earlier truce in March.

According to an Israeli official familiar with the details, Israel is showing “flexibility” on some of the issues that have challenged negotiators, including Israel’s presence in some of the security corridors the military has carved into the territory.

The war was triggered by Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel in which some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 251 people taken hostage.

Most of the hostages have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals while 50 are still being held, less than half of them believed to be alive.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed over 58,600 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead.

It does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its tally.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government but is led by medical professionals.

The United Nations and other international organizations consider its figures to be the most reliable count of war casualties.

Mourners in Iraq grieved their loved ones, weeping on their coffins after a shopping mall fire killed more than 60, including children.

Civil defense teams rescued more than 45 people who became trapped when the fire broke out late Wednesday in the city of Kut, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Others were still missing, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency.

Photographs and videos on local media showed the five-story Corniche Hypermarket Mall engulfed in flames only a week after it had opened.

Iraq's Ministry of Interior said in a statement that 61 people died in the shopping center fire, most of them from suffocation.

Among the dead were 14 charred bodies that remain unidentified, it said.

Provincial Gov. Mohammed al-Miyahi in a statement declared three days of mourning.

Imad al-Quraishi, relative of one of the victims, demanded al-Miyahi and his office all submit their resignations.

Al-Miyahi said the cause of the fire is under investigation and that legal cases were filed against the building owner and shopping center owner but did not specify what the charges were.

He said that no government official has resigned or been dismissed as a result of the fire, and that they are currently awaiting the results of the investigation.

The results of the preliminary investigation will be released within 48 hours, he said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani said in a statement that he had directed the interior minister to go to the site of the fire to investigate and take measures to prevent a recurrence.

An Israeli shell slammed into the compound of Gaza’s only Catholic church on Thursday, killing two people and wounding several others, according to witnesses and church officials.

Among the injured was the parish’s priest, Rev. Gabriel Romanelli, who became a close friend of Pope Francis in the final months of the late pontiff’s life.

The shelling also damaged the church compound, where hundreds of Palestinians have been sheltering from the war.

The church compound was sheltering both Christians and Muslims, including a number of children with disabilities, according to the acting director of Al-Ahli Hospital, which received the fatalities and people injured.

The Catholic charity Caritas Jerusalem said the parish’s 60-year-old janitor and an 84-year-old woman receiving psychosocial support inside a Caritas tent in the church compound were killed in the attack.

Parish priest Romanelli was lightly injured.

The Israeli military said it was aware of the damage caused at the church and is investigating.

In a rare move, the Israeli Foreign Ministry posted an apology on social media.

The church is just a stone’s throw from Al-Ahli Hospital, the facility's acting director said, noting that the area around both the church and the hospital has been repeatedly struck for over a week.

Organizers say the pet transfers help free up space in the Texas shelters, allowing their staff members to focus on rescuing animals and reuniting them with their humans.

Wednesday's arrivals are the second group to arrive in Chicago from Texas this month.
