STORYLINE:

China on Thursday called for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity to be “respected” after Israel struck the Syrian defense ministry in Damascus as it intervened in the clashes between the government forces and Druze militias in southern Syria.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, says at least 374 combatants and civilians were killed in the clashes and Israeli strikes, among them dozens of civilians killed in the crossfire or in targeted attacks against the minority group.

Israel, which has periodically intervened or threatened to intervene in support of the Druze in Syria, launched dozens of strikes on convoys of government forces in southern Syria and on government facilities in Damascus. It has threatened further escalation.

Clashes have on several occasions broken out between forces loyal to the government and Druze fighters since the fall of President Bashar Assad in early December in a lightning rebel offensive led by Sunni Islamist insurgent groups, but this week's fighting has escalated to new levels of violence.

Separately, Lin once again urged the U.S. to engage in dialogue based on “equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit” with China if it wanted to solve the fentanyl issue.

This follows reports that President Donald Trump said he believed China might soon sentence to death those involved in manufacturing and smuggling fentanyl.

STORYLINE:

Witnesses of a fire that engulfed a newly opened shopping mall in eastern Iraq have questioned the building's safety.

More than 60 people, including children, died in the blaze in the city of Kut, Iraqi officials said Thursday.

Accordi ng to the Interior Ministry, civil defense teams rescued more than 45 people trapped when the fire broke out late Wednesday at the Corniche Hypermarket Mall, a five-story shopping center that had opened only a week earlier.

Jalal Al-Shaty, an eyewitness and a local journalist, said the building lacks occupational safety measures.

"I don't know how it was approved to open, " he said, adding that "we hold accountable all those who approved this building, especially since the residents have objections to it."

Poor building standards have often contributed to tragic fires in Iraq.

In July 2021, a blaze at a hospital in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah that killed between 60 to 92 people was determined to have been fueled by highly flammable, low-cost type of “sandwich panel” cladding that is illegal in Iraq.

In 2023, more than 100 people died in a fire at a wedding hall in the predominantly Christian area of Hamdaniya in Nineveh province after the ceiling panels above a pyrotechnic machine burst into flames.

STORYLINE:

Members of the Druze community in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights were seen gathering at the border with Syria Thursday morning waiting to be reunited with their families who crossed into Syria yesterday.

Yasmin Johary, a Druze who resides on the Israeli side, said she was happy to visit on Wednesday relatives and Druze sacred paces in Jarama, Syria. But her mood changed on Thursday as Israeli border police was preventing crossings from Syria. "I am really upset about what is going on and the fact that they can't come here and we can't see them. I have never seen my relatives, my cousins I have never seen them in my life, and I would have liked to see them today," she said.

Syrian government officials and leaders in the Druze religious minority announced a renewed ceasefire Wednesday after days of clashes that have threatened to unravel the country’s postwar political transition and drawn military intervention by powerful neighbor Israel.

The announcement came after Israel launched rare airstrikes in the heart of Damascus, an escalation in a campaign that it said was intended to defend the Druze and push Islamic militants away from its border.

The Druze form a substantial community in Israel as well as in Syria and are seen in Israel as a loyal minority, often serving in the military.

The Druze religious sect began as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.

More than half of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria.

STORYLINE:

From Charleston dresses to Yves Saint Laurent creations, Florence’s Museum of Fashion and Costume is taking visitors on a tour of 20th century styles, with many never-before-seen garments now on show in nine newly-dressed rooms.

Forty dream dresses by the world's most skilful tailors have been brought out from the gallery's storerooms, which hold a collection of 15,000 historical garments and accessories from the 18th century to the present day.

The museum, which reopened in 2024 after being closed for five years, preserves clothes from the Medici dynasty and the 18th and 19th centuries.

It has decided to renew the collections of the selection dedicated to the 20th century on an annual basis.

In rotation, carefully restored gowns - some of which have never been seen by the public - are selected from the warehouse to offer a fresh look at the history of costume.

Passing through the rooms of the Renaissance Palazzo Pitti, visitors can admire the styles of the last century from the Charleston of the 1920s to the glittering 1980s of Enrico Coveri, via creations by Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin and Roberto Capucci.

The clothes are displayed alongside works by Alberto Burri, Galileo Chini and Felice Casorati, Italian masters of 20th century painting.
