STORYLINE:

Bangladeshi security forces on Wednesday clashed with supporters of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leaving at least four people dead and scores injured, a hospital official and local media said.

The violence erupted in the morning and spread as a new political party formed by students who led the uprising against Hasina in August last year announced a march toward southwestern Gopalganj district, Hasina’s ancestral home, and her Awami League party’s stronghold.

TV footage showed pro-Hasina activists armed with sticks attacking police and setting vehicles on fire as a convoy of about 20 vehicles carrying the leaders of the National Citizen Party arrived as part of commemorations of the uprising.

Top leaders of the party took shelter in the office of the local police chief as footage showed some of them were being escorted by soldiers to an armored vehicle for safety.

Jibitesh Biswas, a senior official of a state-run hospital, told reporters that at least three people were brought in dead.

The country's leading English-language Daily Star reported that four people died.

Later on Wednesday, authorities imposed an overnight curfew in the district.

Bangladesh has been in political turmoil since Hasina was toppled and fled to India.

The interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, took over three days after her ouster and pledged to restore order.

He said a new election would be held in April next year.

Gopalganj is a politically sensitive district because Hasina father’s mausoleum is located there.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s independence leader, was buried there after he was assassinated along with most of his family members in a military coup in 1971.

The students' party launched its 'July March to Rebuild the Nation' on July 1 across all districts in Bangladesh as part of its drive to position itself as a new force in Bangladeshi politics, which as been largely dominated by two dynastic families.

One is Hasina’s Awami League party, and the other is the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, or BNP, headed by Hasina’s archrival Khaleda Zia, also a former prime minister.

NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles won as best male and female athletes at the ESPYS on Wednesday night.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA championship last month while piling up hardware as league MVP and scoring champion.

Biles' Olympic teammate, Suni Lee, won the best comeback award for overcoming two rare kidney diseases. She brought one of her doctors to the show.

Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage from point guard Russell Westbrook.

Robertson was president of the NBA Players' Association at the time of a landmark antitrust lawsuit against the NBA in 1970. It led to an extensive reform of the league's strict free agency and draft rules and eventually to higher salaries for all players.

The 86-year-old Robertson, a 12-time All Star known as The Big O during his career, was the first Black president of any sports labor union.

“I knew there was work to do. There was a desperate need for players to have more career security, improved working conditions and other accommodations," he said. “In life, it’s important to be persistent or as I have been called stubborn. Stubborn about what you believe in.”

STORYLINE:

Several thousand people scaled a steep hill in a rural part of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Wednesday to honor Erzulie and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.

The small church replaced Saut-d’Eau after violent gangs attacked the town in March, where the 100-foot waterfall had attracted thousands of Vodou and Christian followers for decades.

The town remains under gang control, preventing thousands from participating in the traditional annual pilgrimage meant to honor the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, who is closely associated with the Vodou goddess of Erzulie.

“It is important to celebrate the mother’s (The Virgin Mary) day anyway, and I came here to thank her,” said a Vodou Priest who preferred not to give his name.

On Wednesday, videos posted on social media showed members of the Canaan gang standing in the large church of Saut-d’Eau that traditionally hosted the annual Mass amid the three-day pilgrimage.

While the small church in Port-au-Prince burst at its seams with faithful praying for the blessing of the Virgin.

During mass service, Monsignor Sander Louis Jean asked the faithful to pray for Haiti. “It is what the Virgin Mary, our mother, wants – unity,” said Monsignor Sander.

STORYLINE:

U.S authorities deported another ninety-five Haitans on Wednesday.

The flight from Florida arrived in the northern city of Cap-Haïtien, where armed police officers waited on the tarmac.

According to authorities, some of the deportees have criminal records and were serving time in the United States.

Many migrants disembarked from the plane with their faces covered and refused to identify themselves.

One of the deportees said he chose to give himself up to ICE – Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and be repatriated. “ I did not want to stay in prison. I am happy to be back in my country,” he said

Eleven women were among the ninety-five deportees.

The immigrants were processed in a makeshift facility set up at the airport in Cap-Haïtien in February when the first deportation flight arrived in the country.

The police detained the repatriates, who will be investigated on a case-by-case basis before being released to go home.

In June, the Department of Homeland Security terminated legal protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitians, setting them up for potential deportation.

It is unclear if any of the deportees were in the United States under the Temporary Protected Status that allows people already in the United States to stay and work legally if their homelands are deemed unsafe.

Immigrants from 17 countries, including Haiti, Afghanistan, Sudan and Lebanon, were receiving those protections before President Donald Trump took office for his second term in January.

STORYLINE:

Several thousand people scaled a steep hill in a rural part of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Wednesday to honor Erzulie and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.

The small church replaced Saut-d’Eau after violent gangs attacked the town in March, where the 100-foot waterfall had attracted thousands of Vodou and Christian followers for decades.

The town remains under gang control, preventing thousands from participating in the traditional annual pilgrimage meant to honor the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, who is closely associated with the Vodou goddess of Erzulie.

“It is important to celebrate the mother’s (The Virgin Mary) day anyway, and I came here to thank her,” said a Vodou Priest who preferred not to give his name.

On Wednesday, videos posted on social media showed members of the Canaan gang standing in the large church of Saut-d’Eau that traditionally hosted the annual Mass amid the three-day pilgrimage.

While the small church in Port-au-Prince burst at its seams with faithful praying for the blessing of the Virgin.

During mass service, Monsignor Sander Louis Jean asked the faithful to pray for Haiti. “It is what the Virgin Mary, our mother, wants – unity,” said Monsignor Sander.
