STORYLINE:

On a hot summer's morning over a dozen people queue outside for the opening of a new cake shop in central Tokyo.

They are eager to be among the first to get the branch’s exclusive batch of Baumkechen – a traditional German spit cake.

The shop’s prized sweet is known for its moist and puffy sponge.

“I like how fluffy it is,” says Kiyoaki Nakamura, a Baumkuchen fan who has been queuing for hours ahead of the opening of the new branch of a well-known Japanese confectioner: Club Harie.

"It has a simple taste…people of all age groups can enjoy it,” says another customer Miki Fukumoto, trying to explain why the cake so popular in Japan.

Baumkuchen means ‘Tree cake’ in German due to its appearance resembling rings of a tree when you slice the cake. It's believed it was introduced by a German baker who was imprisoned in Japan during World War I and it became popular when he stayed on during peacetime.

Many Japanese associate the appearance of tree rings with longevity and prosperity, and it is often given as a gift at weddings and birthdays.

"Germany was the origin, but now there's something like a distinctly Japanese Baumkuchen culture, and I really do feel that," says the CEO of confectioner Club Harie, Takao Yamamoto.

Despite its origins in Europe, Baumkuchen has become one of Japan’s most beloved sweets.

The cake is widely available in Japan in an array of flavours from matcha to various seasonal fruits.

It is sold as a luxury item at department stores, while also being available at convenience stores like 7-Eleven as snacks. Baumkuchen festivals are held in different parts of the country.

STORYLINE:

Aerial footage shot on Thursday showed the extent of the destruction in the Gaza Strip after some 22 months of Israel's war on the territory.

Tent camps can be seen amid the rubble of destroyed city blocks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering ordering the full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media, a move that would draw fierce opposition internationally and within Israel.

It would mark a stunning escalation of the conflict and would put the lives of countless Palestinians and about 20 living hostages at risk, and deepen Israel's already stark international isolation.

Israel's wartime conduct has shocked much of the international community, and prompted even close Western allies to call for an end to the war and to take steps to recognize Palestinian statehood.

The International Court of Justice is considering allegations of genocide, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the use of starvation as a method of war.

Israel has rejected the allegations and accused those making them of antisemitic “blood libel."

It says it has taken every effort to avoid harming civilians and blames Hamas for their deaths because the militants are deeply entrenched in heavily populated areas.

Hamas-led militants abducted 251 hostages in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war and killed around 1,200 people that day, mostly civilians.

They are still holding 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive, and recent videos have shown emaciated captives pleading for their lives.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or combatants.

The ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government and run by medical professionals, is seen by the United Nations and other experts as the most reliable source on casualties. Israel disputes its toll but has not provided its own.

Yehuda Cohen, the father of Nimrod Cohen—an Israeli soldier held captive in Gaza—spoke over a loudspeaker as the boats moved toward the coastline, calling on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prioritize the hostages over politics.

“Netanyahu’s government is doing nothing to rescue them. Netanyahu’s government are acting to kill them, warning to go to war on all Gaza land and killing and endangering the hostages. Please, we need international help,” Cohen said.

Ship horns blared as the families and supporters sailed near Gaza.

Many tossed yellow swimming rings into the sea, symbolically offering them to the hostages.

This came as Netanyahu was expected to announce further military action — and possibly plans for Israel to fully reoccupy Gaza.
