STORYLINE:

US Ambassador to Malaysia said Thursday the recent cross-border talks between Thailand and Cambodia had heralded an "important step" in ceasefire negotiations but more discussion needed to be held.

“The US believes this is an important step. However it's important to recognize this is only a step," Edgard Kagan said in Kuala Lumpur where the talks were taking place.

"The goal here is a sustainable and durable ceasefire, one that is able to be accepted and enforced by both sides," he added.

His comments came as cross-border committee talks continued on Thursday in Malaysia after a tense ceasefire was brokered last week between Thailand and Cambodia after five days of deadly armed border clashes that killed dozens and displaced over 260,000 people.

The talks were initially due to be hosted by Cambodia, but both sides later agreed to a neutral venue in Malaysia, the annual chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which mediated the halt in hostilities last month.

The July 28 ceasefire followed economic pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had warned the warring nations that the U.S. would not conclude trade deals with them if the fighting persisted.

Washington lowered tariffs on goods from the two countries from 36% to 19% on August 1 following the truce.

Discussions of the decades-long competing territorial claims over the pockets of land near the shared border are not on the agenda.

Thailand’s Deputy Defense Minister General Natthaphon Nakpanit said the meeting was held in Malaysia for a "friendly atmosphere."

Four Barbary lion cubs played in their outdoor enclosure at the Safari Park in Dvůr Králové.

The three females and one male soaked up the sun alongside their mother, Khalila, and father, Bart.

The family group will be broken up soon, however, as the Czech zoo is part of an international endangered species program.

That means the cubs will be sent to other participating parks, including the Beersheba Zoo in Israel.

A majestic member of the northern lion subspecies, the Barbary lion once roamed freely across its native North Africa, including the Atlas Mountains.

A symbol of strength, it was almost completely wiped out due to human activity.

Many were killed by gladiators in Roman times, while overhunting and habitat loss contributed to their extinction.

The last known photo of a wild Barbary lion was taken in 1925, and the last confirmed individual was killed in 1942.

It’s believed the last small populations went extinct in the wild in the mid-1960s.

Fewer than 200 are estimated to live in captivity today.

STORYLINE:

France’s largest wildfire in decades continued to burn and spread on Thursday, albeit at a slower pace, having already ravaged more than 16,000 hectares in the south of the country and killed one person, local authorities said.

The blaze, which started on Tuesday and quickly spread through a region battling weeks of dry and hot weather, remained uncontained.

However, a drop in temperature overnight combined with weakening winds helped improve the situation.

The fire has swept through 15 communes in the Corbières massif, destroying or damaging at least 36 homes, with a full damage assessment still underway.

One person died in their home, and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters, according to local authorities.

Three people were reported missing, the Aude prefecture added.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, which has left behind a landscape of total devastation, with tree skeletons left in a lunar landscape of ashes.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to remain confined to their homes “unless evacuation orders are issued by the fire department.”

Those who have already been evacuated were sheltered overnight in temporary accommodation centers in 17 municipalities.

The U.S. began officially levying higher taxes on imports from dozens of countries, four months after Trump first announced plans to impose tariffs on most of the world while seeking new trade agreements across the board.

The White House said that starting just after midnight goods from more than 60 countries and the European Union would face tariff rates of 10% or higher.

The E.U. struck a trade deal with the U.S. to secure a 15% tariff rate on 70% of European goods brought into the U.S., including cars, computer chips and pharmaceuticals.

The remaining 30% of goods are still open to further decisions and negotiations.

STORYLINE:

Airdropped aid continued to fall in the central Gaza Strip Thursday, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to announce further military action — and possibly plans for Israel to fully reoccupy Gaza.

Just a day before, at least 38 Palestinians were killed overnight and into Wednesday while seeking aid from United Nations convoys and sites run by an Israeli-backed American contractor, according to local health officials.

The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots when crowds approached its forces.

Another 25 people, including several women and children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to local hospitals in Gaza. The military said it only targets Hamas militants.

This comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering ordering the full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media, a move that would draw fierce opposition internationally and within Israel.

It would mark a stunning escalation of the nearly 22-month war in the territory that has already been largely destroyed and where experts say famine is unfolding.

It would put the lives of countless Palestinians and about 20 living hostages at risk, and deepen Israel's already stark international isolation.

Israel's wartime conduct has shocked much of the international community, and prompted even close Western allies to call for an end to the war and to take steps to recognize Palestinian statehood.

The International Court of Justice is considering allegations of genocide, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the use of starvation as a method of war.

Israel has rejected the allegations and accused those making them of antisemitic “blood libel." It says it has taken every effort to avoid harming civilians and blames Hamas for their deaths because the militants are deeply entrenched in heavily populated areas.

The war was sparked when Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted another 251.

Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals.

Of the 50 still held in Gaza, around 20 are believed to be alive.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians but says around half were women and children.

It is part of the now largely defunct Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals.

The U.N. and independent experts consider it the most reliable source for the number of war casualties.
