STORYLINE:

Tokyo stocks opened slightly lower Thursday, as U.S. President Donald Trump was set to officially begin levying higher import taxes on dozens of countries. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average opened at 40,668.19 points, down 126.67 points, or 0.31%.

Asian shares were mixed on Thursday after a rally for Apple led Wall Street higher, with U.S. stocks reclaiming more of their sharp losses from last week.

In Japan, factory output contracted in July, purchasing activity fell and hiring slowed, according to the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI. But the data were collected before Trump announced a trade deal that cut tariffs on Japanese exports to 15% from 25%.

To keep their access to the huge American market, major trading partners have struck deals with Trump. The United Kingdom agreed to 10% tariffs and the European Union, South Korea and Japan accepted U.S. tariffs of 15%. Those are much higher than the low single-digit rates they paid last year, but down from the 30% Trump had ordered for the EU and the 25% he ordered for Japan.

"They were my ray of hope on a daily basis. Like when I was feeling down after treating, trying to resuscitate 10, 15 children who just died in front of me, they were the ones who would come to me and try to, you know, give me pep talks. Which is really odd to say, but that was the reality for all of us healthcare workers that came in from the outside. And so, they've been my crutch to kind of keep me up and keep me focused on what matters most."

STORYLINE:

Two injured Palestinian children arrived in San Francisco from Gaza to begin life-saving medical treatment in the Bay Area.

It’s part of a historic humanitarian effort led by a U.S.-based nonprofit.

Fourteen-year-old Layan and six-year-old Ghazal were evacuated from the conflict zone in Gaza to receive life-saving medical care in the United States.

Layan suffered severe burns and shrapnel wounds when her school was bombed. She’s traveling with her mother and younger sister.

Ghazal was injured by an explosion while her family was displaced in Rafah. Her mother and siblings are by her side.

The effort is led by HEAL Palestine, a nonprofit working to connect wounded children from Gaza with hospitals and medical teams across the U.S.

Scientists from Conicet, Argentina’s leading scientific funding and research body, staged a candlelight vigil outside their headquarters in Buenos Aires to protest budget cuts, layoffs and low salaries during a 48-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday.

President Milei has taken his bureaucracy-slashing chainsaw to Argentine research projects and grants, curbing science spending as a part of a broader drive to eliminate Argentina’s chronic fiscal deficit and bring down inflation.

State-backed science organisations have lost 4,000 positions in the last year and a half, a combination of layoffs, frozen contracts and resignations over poor working conditions and low pay.

Conicet suffered a 21% budget cut in real terms last year. Salaries for Conicet researchers have lost 35% of their value. Many warn that the measures are causing a brain drain.

STORYLINE:

Eddie Palmieri, the avant-garde musician who was one of the most innovative artists of rumba and Latin jazz, has died. He was 88.

Fania Records announced Palmieri's death Wednesday evening. Palmieri’s daughter Gabriela told The New York Times that her father died earlier that day at his home in New Jersey after “an extended illness.”

The pianist, composer and bandleader was the first Latino to win a Grammy Award and would win seven more over a career that spanned nearly 40 albums.

Palmieri was born in New York’s Spanish Harlem on December 15, 1936, at a time when music was seen as a way out of the ghetto. He began studying the piano at an early age, like his famous brother Charlie Palmieri, but at age 13, he began playing timbales in his uncle’s orchestra, overcome with a desire for the drums.

He eventually abandoned the instrument and went back to the playing piano. “I’m a frustrated percussionist, so I take it out on the piano,” the musician once said in his website biography.

His first Grammy win came in 1975 for the album “The Sun of Latin Music,” and he kept releasing music into his 80s, performing through the coronavirus pandemic via livestreams.

In a 2011 interview with The Associated Press, when asked if he had anything important left to do, he responded with his usual humility and good humor: “Learning to play the piano well. ... Being a piano player is one thing. Being a pianist is another.”

Thirteen people were killed east of Gaza City on Wednesday in two Israeli airstrikes.

Six children and five women were among the dead, according to Al-Ahli Hospital.

The Israeli military responded to the report saying that "in stark contrast to Hamas' intentional attacks on Israeli men, women and children, the IDF follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm."

At least 38 Palestinians were killed overnight and into Wednesday in the Gaza Strip while seeking aid from United Nations convoys and sites run by an Israeli-backed American contractor, according to local health officials.

The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots when crowds approached its forces.

The latest deaths came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to announced further military action — and possibly plans for Israel to fully reoccupy Gaza.

Experts say Israel's ongoing military offensive and blockade are already pushing the territory of some 2 million Palestinians into famine.

Another escalation of the nearly 22-month war could put the lives of countless Palestinians and around 20 living Israeli hostages at risk, and would draw fierce opposition both internationally and within Israel.

Netanyahu's far-right coalition allies have long called for the war to be expanded, and for Israel to eventually take over Gaza, relocate much of its population and rebuild Jewish settlements there.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted another 251.

Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals.

Fifty are still held in Gaza and about 30 are dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians but says around half were women and children.

It is part of the now largely defunct Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals.

The UN and independent experts consider it the most reliable source for the number of war casualties.

STORYLINE:

Anti-nuclear war activists protested outside Lawrence Livermore National laboratory in California on Wednesday, the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Several dozen protesters staged a "die-in," lying on ground as sirens blared, to remember the Japanese victims of the US attack that led to Japan's surrender during World War II.

Then they performed a traditional Japanese Bon dance to honor deceased ancestors.

Some activists blocked the gates of the laboratory, prompting police to declare an unlawful assembly and ordering them to disperse. After the activists failed to heed the orders, police wrote them citations, but did not detain them.

Activists have held similar events outside Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to commemorate the WWII bombings for more than 40 years.

The bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroyed the city and killed 140,000 people.

A second bomb dropped three days later on Nagasaki killed 70,000. Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, ending World War II and Japan’s nearly half-century of aggression in Asia.

But when the chatbot refused to answer prompts about harmful subjects, researchers easily found information by claiming it was for a presentation or a friend. The answers reflect something known as sycophancy, a tendency for AI responses to match rather than challenge a person's beliefs. A study found that in the US, more than 70% of teens turned to AI chatbots for companionship and half use AI companions regularly. Sam Altman said the company is trying to study emotional overreliance on the technology."
