STORYLINE:

Fuel control switches for the engines of the Air India flight that crashed last month were moved from the “run” to the “cutoff” position moments before impact, starving both engines of fuel, a preliminary investigation report said on Saturday.

The report, issued by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, also indicated that both pilots were confused over the change to the switch setting, which caused a loss of engine thrust shortly after takeoff.

The Air India flight - a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner - crashed on June 12 in Ahmedabad, killing at least 260 people, including 19 on the ground.

Only one passenger survived the crash, which is one of India’s worst aviation disasters.

According to the report, the flight lasted around 30 seconds between takeoff and crash.

It said that once the aircraft achieved its top recorded speed, “the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another" within a second.

The report did not say how the switches could have flipped to the cutoff position during the flight.

The movement of the fuel control switches allow and cut fuel flow to the plane’s engines.

The switches were flipped back into the run position, the report said, but the plane could not gain power quickly enough to stop its descent after the aircraft had begun to lose altitude.

“One of the pilots transmitted “‘MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY’,” the report said.

It also indicated confusion in the cockpit moments before the crash.

In the flight’s final moment, one pilot was heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel. “The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” the report said.

The preliminary report did not recommend any actions to the Boeing.

Air India in a statement said it is fully cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

The plane’s black boxes - combined cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders - were recovered in the days following the crash and later downloaded in India.

Peruvian workers protesting the cancelation of their mining permits clashed with police on Friday after blocking sections of the Pan-American Highway for several days.

Officers used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators in Ayacucho.

Local media reported that several people were injured during the clashes, while authorities had not immediately provided any official figures.

The miners operated for decades under a law that sought to regulate their practices, which expired in June.

Mining associations and unions have said about 50,000 jobs would be lost following the permit cancellations.

Peru is the world's third-largest producer of copper and ninth-largest producer of gold, according to the United States Geological Survey.

STORYLINE:

For 23-year-old Oleksandra Ymanets, seeking shelter in a Kyiv metro station each night has become routine.

Ymanets, who has a 10-month-old son, says the shelter in the subway feels safer than her home at night as Russian missile and drone attacks continue to target the Ukrainian capital with little warning.

Around 5 a.m., she usually leaves the shelter with her child, walks home, lies down to sleep and wakes up relieved to see her baby smiling.

Then evening comes. She packs a bag, places it by the door, prepares the stroller and lays out clothes for herself and her baby. When the siren sounds again, she’s ready to hide.

“When it’s about you — that’s one thing. But when it’s about your child, for what?” she said. “To kill him just for being born in Ukraine? He didn’t choose where to be born.”

Before marching towards the City Hall they released white doves, as Leo Martinez, a leader with VC Defensa, said they were fighting for peace.

Federal immigration authorities said Friday they arrested about 200 immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally in raids a day earlier on two California cannabis farm sites.

Protesters engaged in a tense standoff with authorities during an operation at one of the farms. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that authorities executed criminal search warrants in Carpinteria and Camarillo, California, on Thursday.

They arrested immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally, and there were also at least 10 immigrant children on site, the statement said.

Four U.S. citizens were arrested for “assaulting or resisting officers,” the department said.

I think I'm just still trying to have conversations all across the board. When you get tightened to a certain area, I'm disinterested in being bounded by a budget or bounded by medium. I'm open. I just think I'm constantly trying to be influenced and to influence and to have richer conversation. You know, you get to, if that conversation comes because of a 'Till,' fantastic. If that conversation come because you see me in a performance art piece on the street, wilding out presumably, fantastic! If that leads you to one or the other, if '40' leads you to 'Till' to perform. Or anybody who's been in connection to me, because the community that has developed me is just as valuable as the things that I have had the privilege and honor to do."
