Protesters in Tel Aviv gathered on Saturday to hold a silent vigil for children killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza and to call for a comprehensive ceasefire to end the war.

Demonstrators on the side of the road held candles and pictures showing hundreds of children who were killed in Gaza as they tried to raise awareness and engage with another large group marching to demand the immediate release of all the hostages by Hamas.

Crowds of protesters took to central Tel Aviv on Saturday for the weekly demonstration demanding a ceasefire and a deal to return all the remaining hostages.

Maayan Sherman, the mother of former hostage Ron Sherman, called for further action.

“I'm here to remind everybody that there are 50 more hostages that must come back to Israel, must come back to their families. 20 of them are still alive, and we have to do whatever we can in order to bring them back,” she told The Associated Press.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people in their Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and abducted 251.

They still hold 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

It comes as 31 Palestinians were fatally shot on their way to an aid distribution site in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, while Israeli airstrikes killed at least 28 Palestinians including four children, Palestinian hospital officials and witnesses said.

There were no signs of a breakthrough in ceasefire talks following two days of meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump had said he was nearing an agreement between Israel and Hamas that would potentially wind down the war.

Over a hundred people crowded into a small bookstore in Puerto Rico to learn more about the island and the work of its homegrown artist: Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny.

In his newest album, “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS”, Bad Bunny elevated Puerto Rico’s global profile to new heights this year and sparked ongoing fascination with the Caribbean island.

But not all the words in his lyrics are easy to understand for non-Puerto Ricans or people of another generation.

That is why linguist and lexicographer Maia Sherwood Droz has launched “El ABC de DtMF”, a dictionary that decodes the slang, cultural references, and historical allusions found in Bad Bunny’s songs.

Puerto Rico’s renowned rapper Bad Bunny launched his first concert on Friday night as part of the artist 30-show residency in the island.

In his newest album, "DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS”, Bad Bunny promoted the island’s traditional music, denounced its gentrification and challenged the political status of the U.S. territory.

The crowd filled the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum with a capacity for 18,000 people.

The artist spent half of Friday’s concert singing from the porch and roof of a traditional Puerto Rican home that served as a second stage, where he wonders about its fate aloud because it’s been rented: “Do good people live there? Is it an Airbnb?”

Bad Bunny’s newest album and his planned 30 concerts are already having a tangible effect.

More than 35,000 hotel nights have been booked during the normally slow summer season, with the concerts expected to attract more than 600,000 visitors, generate more than $186 million and create more than 3,600 jobs, according to government officials.

Beyond that, Bad Bunny’s use of folkloric music like bomba and plena in his latest album has revived interest in those musical traditions.

Some Bad Bunny fans sported long ruffled skirts traditionally worn to dance bomba, while others donned straw hats known as a “pava,” worn by “jíbaros,” Puerto Rican peasants.

It was the same outfit worn by musicians and dancers on the main stage, which at one point even featured live chickens.

On the stage, bright lights showed the words “No me iré de aquí”, "I will not leave here”.

STORYLINE:

Intensive firefighting operations are ongoing around the town of Kassab in northwestern Syria, as wildfires continue to burn for the tenth consecutive day.

Syrian Civil Defense units, supported by teams from neighboring countries, remain deployed across the affected areas, to contain the blazes and limit environmental damage.

The fires, which started in early July, have proven difficult to bring under control despite reinforcements from Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.

Specialized search and rescue and firefighting teams from Qatar’s Ministry of Interior also arrived on Saturday.

According to a statement by the Syrian Civil Defense, the Qatari teams are equipped with advanced vehicles and equipment, including aircraft dedicated to firefighting, to support ongoing efforts to control the fires in the forests of Latakia’s countryside and prevent their spread.

“Large areas have been burned, possibly exceeding 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres),” said Abdel-Kafi Kayali, a Syrian civil defense officer.

“Our teams are working with full capacity and all available resources to confront the fire lines and contain them to prevent the flames from spreading to new forested areas,” he added.

Helicopters from the Syrian Air Force have also been deployed, conducting aerial water drops over the burning areas.

Summer fires are common in the eastern Mediterranean region, where experts warn that climate change is intensifying conditions.

Below-average rainfalls over the winter have also left Syrians struggling with water shortages this summer, as the springs and rivers that normally supply much of the population with drinking water have gone dry.

Mihkku Laiti, also known by his artist name “Yungmiqu”, is performing in his native tongue - Sámi in Utsjoki, Finland.

"So many voices who bring a brand new day," he raps.

"Still the war keeps raging in my head. Don’t care what others think or say. The boat waits ashore."

The majority of the population in Utsjoki are members of Europe’s only recognised Indigenous people, and Sámi culture is visible also here.

Laiti founded this festival.

He first found fame on the TV show Talent Finland, where he surprised the judges by rapping in traditional Sámi clothing, the gákti.

He’s worn it less for performances recently, to show people that it’s possible to be Sámi and wear whatever you want.

“When I rap about my culture, I want to show how it (is) being like Sámi from my point of view is like. Because there are many stereotypes about Sámi people and I want to normalise the basic stuff we do and not romanticise those things,” he explains.

Yungmiqu is aware that many of his fans don’t understand what he’s saying, but it doesn’t seem to bother anyone.

He started rapping because he became embarrassed by his voice cracks during his teenage years but hopes to return to singing.

Close to midnight in the northernmost municipality in the European Union, at this time of year the sun doesn’t set at all.

The weather in the fells is unpredictable, and tourists who come to Lapland are warned to respect the rapidly changing conditions.

At Loktafeasta festival, no-one seems to be put off by the alternating rain and almost surreal beam of the midnight sun illuminating the performer's face just after 11pm.

Events like this are rare in the region.

“Our teams are working with full capacity and all available resources to confront the fire lines and contain them to prevent the flames from spreading to new forested areas. Heavy machinery is also being used to isolate roads and to separate forested regions from each other. We are doing everything we can to achieve a good level of control. Yes, large areas have been burned, possibly exceeding 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres). All efforts are focused on reducing the affected area and protecting the remaining green spaces.”

“We’re working under difficult weather conditions and natural challenges, as the fire is in mountainous areas that are hard to reach with ground firefighting vehicles. However, we are carrying out operations using aircrafts in locations that are inaccessible by land.

STORYLINE:

Intensive firefighting operations are ongoing around the town of Kassab in northwestern Syria, as wildfires continue to burn for the tenth consecutive day.

Syrian Civil Defense units, supported by teams from neighboring countries, remain deployed across the affected areas, to contain the blazes and limit environmental damage.

The fires, which started in early July, have proven difficult to bring under control despite reinforcements from Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.

Specialized search and rescue and firefighting teams from Qatar’s Ministry of Interior also arrived on Saturday.

According to a statement by the Syrian Civil Defense, the Qatari teams are equipped with advanced vehicles and equipment, including aircraft dedicated to firefighting, to support ongoing efforts to control the fires in the forests of Latakia’s countryside and prevent their spread.
