Many were treated to a video light show, projected onto historic buildings in the capital, which charted Mexico's history from the founding of the Aztec empire to the Spanish conquest, independence, revolution, and modern Mexico.

The facades of the National Palace and the cathedral were the backdrop for the projections, while replicas of several Aztec gods were placed in the main square and illuminated during the show.

Just a week had remained before scientists in South Africa were to begin clinical trials of an HIV vaccine, and hopes were high for another step toward limiting one of history's deadliest pandemics. Then the email arrived.

Stop all work, it said. The United States under the Trump administration was withdrawing all its funding.

The news devastated the researchers, who live and work in a region where more people live with HIV than anywhere else in the world. Their research project, called BRILLIANT, was meant to be the latest to draw on the region's genetic diversity and deep expertise in the hope of benefiting people everywhere.

But the $46 million from the U.S. for the project was disappearing, part of the dismantling of foreign aid by the world's biggest donor earlier this year as President Donald Trump announced a focus on priorities at home.

Crowds of protesters took to central Tel Aviv on Saturday to demand a ceasefire and hold a silent vigil for children killed in the war in Gaza.

Demonstrators on the side of the road held candles and pictures showing hundreds of children who were killed in Gaza as they tried to raise awareness and engage with another large group marching to demand the immediate release of all the hostages by Hamas.

Knesset member Ofer Cassif said at the vigil he is "ashamed of what is going on, of what Israel has been doing for almost two years now: the genocide in Gaza, the butchery of thousands of thousands of innocent civilians, almost 20,000 children."

At the weekly demontration in Tel Aviv, Maayan Sherman, the mother of former hostage Ron Sherman, called for further action.

“I'm here to remind everybody that there are 50 more hostages that must come back to Israel, must come back to their families. 20 of them are still alive, and we have to do whatever we can in order to bring them back,” she told The Associated Press.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people in their Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and abducted 251.

They still hold 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

STORYLINE:

At least 31 Palestinians were fatally shot on their way to an aid distribution site in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, while Israeli airstrikes killed at least 28 Palestinians including four children, Palestinian hospital officials and witnesses said.

The deaths came after no signs of a breakthrough in ceasefire talks following two days of meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump had said he was closing in on an agreement between Israel and Hamas that would potentially wind down the war.

The 31 shot dead were on their way to a distribution site run by the Israeli-backed American organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation near Rafah in southern Gaza, hospital officials and witnesses said.

The Red Cross said its field hospital saw its largest influx of dead in more than a year of operation after the shootings, and that the overwhelming majority of the more than 100 people hurt had gunshot wounds.

The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots toward people it said were behaving suspiciously to prevent them from approaching.

It added it was not aware of any casualties from the incident.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said no incident occurred near its sites.

Abdullah al-Haddad said he was 200 meters (655 feet) away from an aid distribution site run by the GHF close to the Shakoush area, west of Rafah, when an Israeli tank started firing at crowds of Palestinians.

At least 31 people were fatally shot when they were travelling to the site run by the Israeli-backed American organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation near Rafah, hospital officials and witnesses said on Saturday.

They also said that Israeli airstrikes in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis on Saturday killed at least 28 Palestinians, including four children.

Israel's military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people in their Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that sparked the war and abducted 251.

Hamas still holds some 50 hostages, with at least 20 believed to remain alive.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed over 57,800 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry, under Gaza’s Hamas-run government, doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

STORYLINE:

Puerto Rico’s renowned rapper Bad Bunny launched his first concert on Friday night as part of the artist's 30-show residency in the island.

In his newest album, "DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS”, Bad Bunny promoted the island’s traditional music, denounced its gentrification and challenged the political status of the U.S. territory.

The crowd filled the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum with a capacity for 18,000 people.

The artist spent half of Friday’s concert singing from the porch and roof of a traditional Puerto Rican home that served as a second stage, where he wondered about its fate aloud because it’s been rented: “Do good people live there? Is it an Airbnb?”

Bad Bunny’s newest album and his planned 30 concerts are already having a tangible effect.

More than 35,000 hotel nights have been booked during the normally slow summer season, with the concerts expected to attract more than 600,000 visitors, generate more than $186 million and create more than 3,600 jobs, according to government officials.

Beyond that, Bad Bunny’s use of folkloric music like bomba and plena in his latest album has revived interest in those musical traditions.

Some Bad Bunny fans sported long ruffled skirts traditionally worn to dance bomba, while others donned straw hats known as a “pava,” worn by “jíbaros,” Puerto Rican peasants.

It was the same outfit worn by musicians and dancers on the main stage, which at one point even featured live chickens.

On the stage, bright lights showed the words “No me iré de aquí”, "I will not leave here”.
