STORYLINE:

A Bangladeshi immigrant still recovering from injuries suffered in the failed pipe bombing of the New York subway system pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges Thursday.

Akayed Ullah, 27, entered the plea after he was indicted a day earlier on charges he provided material support to a terrorist organization and used a weapon of mass destruction in the Dec. 11 attack.

The bearded Ullah was the only person seriously hurt when the bomb went off in a corridor linking the subway to Manhattan's Port Authority bus terminal.

U.S. District Judge Richard J. Sullivan asked Ullah how he wanted to plead to the six-count indictment. Ullah responded: "At this moment, not guilty."

His court-appointed attorney, Amy Gallicchio, did not elaborate on the plea outside court.

During the proceeding, she asked Sullivan if he could intervene to speed medical care to Ullah at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, which is next to the courthouse in lower Manhattan.

She said Ullah recently had some stitches removed but had others that were still causing him a "great deal of discomfort." And she said he needed some of the dressing on his wounds changed.

He seemed to walk gingerly to his seat before the hearing began.

The judge said she should make her requests first of prison authorities and return to the judge only if they don't respond.

The judge said he may set a trial date at the next hearing, which was set for April 13.

Authorities said Ullah taunted President Donald Trump on Facebook before the attack.

The president later demanded tightened immigration rules.

Prosecutors said Ullah wanted to cause carnage to avenge U.S. aggression toward the Islamic State group.

The pipe bomb never fully exploded.

(3 Jan 2018) A Turkish banker accused of helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions has been convicted by a jury in New York after a trial that sowed distrust between the two nations.

The verdict came Wednesday at a trial where witnesses described corruption at the highest levels of Turkey's government, prompting its leaders to lash out at the U.S. prosecution.

The verdict pertained solely to Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla, but its ramifications were likely to affect relations between Turkey and the U.S.

Atilla was convicted of five counts, including conspiracy. He was acquitted of one money-laundering charge.

Defense attorney Victor Rocco, speaking outside of the courthouse said he will appeal.

Social movements and supporters of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gathered for a demonstration on Thursday in Sao Paulo against U.S. President Donald Trump and in favor of taxing the super-rich.

The protest was scheduled by unions and leftist movements as a call for taxing billionaires and confronting what organizers call “an anti-people Congress". After Trump's announcements, the movement incorporated the critics of tariffs and its major effect on Brazil's economy.

Many demonstrators wore green and yellow, as well as Brazil’s national soccer team jersey.

At a time of surging inflation, high unemployment and dwindling savings, the scarcity of cash has magnified the financial squeeze on families -- some of whom have begun to sell their possessions to buy essential goods.

The cash that is available has even lost some of its luster. Palestinians use the Israeli currency, the shekel, for most transactions. Yet with Israel no longer resupplying the territory with newly printed bank notes, merchants are increasingly reluctant to accept frayed bills.

Small business owners said they were under pressure to ask customers for undamaged cash because their suppliers demand pristine bills from them.

This problem has given rise to a new business in Gaza: money repair. It costs between 3 and 10 shekels ($1-$3) to mend old bank notes. But even cash repaired with tape or other means is sometimes rejected.

To curtail Hamas’ ability to purchase weapons and pay its fighters, Israel stopped allowing cash to enter Gaza at the start of the war. Around the same time, many wealthy families in Gaza withdrew ... [truncated]

STORYLINE:

Firefighters in Chile scrambled Thursday to rescue residents and their pets from a building that filled with smoke from a fire in its basement.

Mario Desbordes, Mayor of the Chilean capital Santiago, said that while the fire was still blazing, over 100 people were rescued from the building and there were no reported injuries.

Desbordes said the fire started in the building's basement, used to store cardboard and plastic boxes.

The first responders' teams reported that 40 people were treated after inhaling smoke or for shock.

Residents of the high-rise building were mainly concerned about their pets and thanked the firefighters for helping them to evacuate without leaving them behind.

The firefighter department confirmed the fire did not spread to the apartments.

Israel's military offensive on Tulkarem, an area in the northern West Bank where troops have emptied and ripped up two major refugee camps, has sent residents scrambling for shelter. One, Abdul Salam Awda, 71, has been forced to live in a scrapped minibus.

Salam Awda and his family converted an old minibus into their shelter after being forced by the Israeli military to leave their home.

A deepening economic crisis makes almost every aspect of life in Cuba challenging for the population; long lines for buses, power outages and shortages are part of everyday life on the island.

But Cuban women will do everything they can to look their best no matter what, and the fashion of extremely long and highly decorated fingernails has become a must for those willing and able to spend the time and money.

While over-the-top nail designs have long been common elsewhere, in Cuba they stand out because most Cubans have little disposable income and procuring the embellishments isn’t easy.

And for those who have mastered the work, whether from online video tutorials or visiting manicurists from other countries, extravagant nails have become an important source of income in Cuba’s limited private economy.

Recently, Cuban manicurist Marisel Dárias Valdés spent nearly six hours applying and decorating the acrylic extensions for a client.

She set up a nail salon at her home in Havana, where she displays the specialized, imported products that are expensive and very difficult to obtain in the city.

The nails that Dárias decorated for her client, Mariam Camila Sosa, were at least an inch (2.5 cms) long. Sosa chose the cartoon character Sponge Bob because it is her daughter’s favorite. The ... [truncated]
