STORYLINE:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said intelligence reports indicate Russia will “drag” out the war.

"Putin will drag on this war. Putin refuses all opportunities to initiate a real ceasefire. He doesn't want real peace," said Zelenskyy at a press conference in Rome on Thursday.

Separately, Zelenskyy added he had "a very constructive dialogue with President Trump about Patriot systems" asking for 10 systems "and an appropriate amount of missiles for these systems."

It comes after the Trump administration resumed sending some weapons to Ukraine, a week after the Pentagon had directed that some deliveries be paused, U.S. officials said on Wednesday.

The weapons heading into Ukraine include 155 mm munitions and precision-guided rockets known as GMLRS, two officials told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to provide details that had not been announced publicly.

It’s unclear exactly when the weapons started moving.

Russia pounded Ukraine’s capital with another major missile and drone attack overnight into Thursday.

The attack killed at least two people and caused fires across Kyiv a day after the heaviest drone attack so far in the more than three-year war, Ukrainian officials said.

In another tense and sleepless night for Kyiv residents, with many of them dashing in the dark with children, pets and blankets to the protection of subway stations, at least 22 people were wounded, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Administration.

The night was punctuated with drones that slammed into residential areas, exploded and sent balls of orange flames into the dark during the 10-hour barrage.

Russia fired 397 Shahed and decoy drones as well as cruise and ballistic missiles at Kyiv and five other regions, authorities said.

STORYLINE:

Shock has turned into grief across Texas where at least 120 people have died from flash floods and more were missing as the search for victims moved methodically along endless miles of rivers and rubble Thursday.

Photos of those who have died along with a colorful array of flowers and candles now decorate a fence in Hill Country — a growing tribute that reflects the enormity of the disaster in the region.

The victims include three friends who had gathered for the July Fourth weekend, 8-year-old sisters who were at summer camp and a 91-year-old grandmother known for her sharp wit.

More than 170 people have been reported missing, most in Kerr County, where nearly 100 victims have been recovered. The death toll remained at 120 Thursday, nearly a week since the floods first hit.

Authorities say they have carefully gone over the list of those unaccounted for but those numbers are often tough to pin down in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

The unrelenting power of the floods forced families to make unnerving escapes with little time to spare in the middle of the night. One woman recounted how she and others, including a toddler, first climbed into an attic and then onto a roof where they heard screams and watched vehicles float past. Photos and videos captured their ordeal.

President Trump will visit Texas tomorrow.

"I think it's awesome that he cares enough to come down here and help us and do what he can," said Kerrville resident Margaret Marrell, as she visited a memorial with flowers and photos of the flood victims.

Local officials and aid workers gathered outside the Ukrainian embassy in Paris on Thursday to wave off a truck carrying medical supplies and health equipment for the war-affected nation.

The supplies were collected by the French public health association SAFE, as part of its ongoing commitment to humanitarian aid distribution.

Included in this latest shipment are an ambulance, medical equipment, and 15 portable power stations, which will be deployed in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, a region still in need of humanitarian assistance.

SAFE is working closely with the Ukrainian non-governmental organisation the Medical Aid Committee, which was launched by several members of the French association over 20 years ago.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, SAFE rekindled its connections with the Committee and has sent more than 300 aid trucks so far.

The departure of the truck came as European leaders gathered in Italy to open an annual Ukraine recovery conference.

The conference is expected to finalize individual deals of guarantees and grants to unlock more than 10 billion euros (around $12 billion) in investments, Italy's prime minister said.

The European Commission, for its part, announced the creation of the European Flagship Fund for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, the largest equity fund to date to support the country.

President Donald Trump singled out Brazil for import taxes of 50% on Wednesday for its treatment of its former president, Jair Bolsonaro, showing that personal grudges rather than simple economics are a driving force in the U.S. leader's use of tariffs.

Trump avoided his standard form letter with Brazil, specifically tying his tariffs to the trial of Bolsonaro, who is charged with trying to overturn his 2022 election loss. Trump has described Bolsonaro as a friend and hosted the former Brazilian president at his Mar-a-Lago resort when both were in power in 2020.

“This Trial should not be taking place,” Trump wrote in the letter posted on Truth Social. “It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!”

There is a sense of kinship as Trump was indicted in 2023 for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The U.S. president addressed his tariff letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who bested Bolsonaro in 2022.

“(Donald) Trump had already alerted on retaliations for BRICS (members) since he took office and when the story about using their own currency started, to deal with our own currency. Trump never admitted this. At the same time, there was the (BRICS) meeting in Rio and Bolsonaro’s trial, that’s why the letter mixes both subjects,” Marco Teixeira, Political Science Professor of FGV, told the Associated Press.

Lula responded in a forceful statement that said Trump's tariffs would trigger the country's economic reciprocity law, which allows trade, investment and intellectual property agreements to be suspended against countries that harm Brazil's competitiveness.

He noted that the U.S. has had a trade surplus of more than $410 billion with Brazil over the past 14 years.

“Brazil is a sovereign country with independent institutions that will not accept being taken for granted by anyone,” Lula said.

A deacon who helped prevent what authorities say could have been a mass shooting by using his truck to strike a gunman outside a Michigan church has received a new Ford F-150.

Richard Pryor was handed the keys to the new pickup Thursday at a Detroit-area dealership.

Pryor had arrived late to a June 22 morning service at CrossPointe Community Church when he saw Brian Browning driving recklessly. Browning was wearing a tactical vest and carrying firearms when he exited his car before being struck by Pryor’s F-150. He shot at Pryor’s vehicle and continued firing as he approached the church, wounding one person. Members of the Wayne church’s security staff fatally shot Browning.

The new pickup is on a two-year lease and valued at about $70,000. That’s according to Matthew Demmer, the dealership's owner and general manager.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of people arrived at the Srebrenica memorial center in Bosnia on Thursday, the eve of the burial of seven more massacre victims on the 30th anniversary of Europe's only acknowledged post-World War II genocide.

The marchers set off on their journey earlier in the week, tracing in reverse the path taken by men and boys of the primarily Muslim Bosniak ethnic group who were killed while fleeing Bosnian Serb forces during the country’s interethnic war in 1995.

More than 8,000 men and boys were executed in just several days after Bosnian Serb fighters overran the small eastern Bosnian town during the final months of the interethnic war in the Balkan country.

Their bodies were dumped in mass graves around Srebrenica and later reburied multiple times to hide evidence of the crimes.

Remains are still being excavated and buried annually on July 11, the anniversary of the start of the killings.

The seven victims that are to be laid to rest on Friday at the cemetery near Srebrenica were identified recently after being recovered in different locations over the past years.

Thousands of people, including a number of foreign government dignitaries, are expected to attend Friday's burial and mark the anniversary at the Potocari memorial complex near Srebrenica.

The conflict in Bosnia left more than 100,000 people killed and millions displaced.

Both Bosnia’s Serbs and neigboring Serbia still refuse to acknowledge that the massacre in Srebrenica was a genocide, despite rulings by two U.N. courts.

Scores of Bosnian Serb political and military officials have been convicted and sentenced in connection with the massacre.
