STORYLINE:

Years of American-led investment into AIDS programs has reduced the number of people killed by the disease to the lowest levels seen in more than three decades.

But in the last six months, the sudden withdrawal of US money has caused a “systemic shock,” U.N. officials warned.

They also warned if the funding isn’t replaced, it could lead to more than 4 million AIDS-related deaths and 6 million more HIV infections by 2029.

“The sudden withdrawal of the single biggest HIV donor combined with other cuts of aid from other governments that were happening more gradually is putting this progress at risk, particularly for the low income, highly burdened countries, again mostly on this continent,” said Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of the UN agency that fights HIV, UNAIDS.

UNAIDS also said it feared other major donors might also scale back their support, reversing decades of progress against AIDS worldwide — and that the strong multilateral cooperation is in jeopardy due to wars, geopolitical shifts and climate change.

The $4 billion that the United States pledged for the global HIV response for 2025 disappeared virtually overnight in January when President Donald Trump ordered all foreign aid be suspended.

The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, was launched in 2003 by President George W. Bush, the biggest-ever commitment by any country focused on a single disease.

UNAIDS called the program a “lifeline” for countries with high HIV rates, and said it supported testing for 84.1 million people, treatment for 20.6 million, among other initiatives.

According to data from Nigeria, PEPFAR also funded 99.9% of the country’s budget for medicines taken to prevent HIV.

In 2024, there were about 630,000 AIDS-related deaths worldwide, per a UNAIDS estimate; the figure has remained about the same... [truncated]

The unique and original Birkin bag that fashion house Hermès made for actor and singer Jane Birkin has sold for 8.6 million euros ($10.1 million), including fees, at auction in Paris.

The huge amount on Thursday shattered the record for a handbag and made the bag the second most valuable fashion item ever sold at auction.

The price crushed the previous auction record for a handbag — $513,040 paid in 2021 for a Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28.

Sotheby’s didn’t identify the buyer.

“It's been bought by a Japanese collector and the total 'hammer' and BP (buyer's premium) price is 8.6 million euros,” said Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's Global Head of Handbags and Fashion Department.

Nine collectors bidding by telephone, online, and in the room competed in the 10-minute auction battle, with the private collector from Japan beating a last remaining other bidder at the end.

Paris fashion house Hermès exclusively commissioned the bag for the London-born star in 1984.

The subsequent commercialized version of Birkin’s bag went on to become one of the world’s most exclusive luxury items.

A deacon who helped prevent what authorities say could have been a mass shooting by using his truck to strike a gunman outside a Michigan church has received a new Ford F-150.

Richard Pryor was handed the keys to the new pickup Thursday at a Detroit-area dealership.

Pryor had arrived late to a June 22 morning service at CrossPointe Community Church when he saw Brian Browning driving recklessly. Browning was wearing a tactical vest and carrying firearms when he exited his car before being struck by Pryor’s F-150. He shot at Pryor’s vehicle and continued firing as he approached the church, wounding one person. Members of the Wayne church’s security staff fatally shot Browning.

The new pickup is on a two-year lease and valued at about $70,000. That’s according to Matthew Demmer, the dealership's owner and general manager.

President Donald Trump singled out Brazil for import taxes of 50% on Wednesday for its treatment of its former president, Jair Bolsonaro, showing that personal grudges rather than simple economics are a driving force in the U.S. leader's use of tariffs.

Trump avoided his standard form letter with Brazil, specifically tying his tariffs to the trial of Bolsonaro, who is charged with trying to overturn his 2022 election loss. Trump has described Bolsonaro as a friend and hosted the former Brazilian president at his Mar-a-Lago resort when both were in power in 2020.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of people arrived at the Srebrenica memorial center in Bosnia on Thursday, the eve of the burial of seven more massacre victims on the 30th anniversary of Europe's only acknowledged post-World War II genocide.

The marchers set off on their journey earlier in the week, tracing in reverse the path taken by men and boys of the primarily Muslim Bosniak ethnic group who were killed while fleeing Bosnian Serb forces during the country’s interethnic war in 1995.

More than 8,000 men and boys were executed in just several days after Bosnian Serb fighters overran the small eastern Bosnian town during the final months of the interethnic war in the Balkan country.

Their bodies were dumped in mass graves around Srebrenica and later reburied multiple times to hide evidence of the crimes.

Remains are still being excavated and buried annually on July 11, the anniversary of the start of the killings.

The seven victims that are to be laid to rest on Friday at the cemetery near Srebrenica were identified recently after being recovered in different locations over the past years.

Thousands of people, including a number of foreign government dignitaries, are expected to attend Friday's burial and mark the anniversary at the Potocari memorial complex near Srebrenica.

The conflict in Bosnia left more than 100,000 people killed and millions displaced.

Both Bosnia’s Serbs and neigboring Serbia still refuse to acknowledge that the massacre in Srebrenica was a genocide, despite rulings by two U.N. courts.

Scores of Bosnian Serb political and military officials have been convicted and sentenced in connection with the massacre.
