STORYLINE:

This is Dr. Claudette Yaméogo at work.

It's painstaking, and tricky to treat the children here - especially when you are the only ophthalmologist who specializes in such treatment.

Isaka Diallo was playing with friends when a stone struck his left eye.

For two weeks, his parents searched hospitals in western Burkina Faso for an eye doctor. The village clinic only prescribed painkillers. Other health workers did not know what to do.

When they eventually found Dr.Yaméogo it was too late for Isaka. His injury had become too difficult to treat.

It is a common problem in the country of about 23 million people, which has just 70 ophthalmologists.

Yaméogo, who started her practice late last year, says the work is daunting and often requires her to visit — at no cost — families who cannot afford care or cannot make their way to the hospital where she works.

In Burkina Faso, an estimated 70% of the population lives in rural areas.

And yet ophthalmologists are concentrated in the capital, Ouagadougou, and other main cities, making them unreachable for many.

While more than 2,000 ophthalmology procedures were performed in Burkina Faso’s western Hauts-Bassins region in 2024, only 52 of those were carried out in its more rural areas, according to the Ministry of Health.

Most procedures were done in the area of Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second city.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on France, Britain and other countries to join together in recognizing a Palestinian state to revive efforts for a two-state solution in the Middle East.

This statement came during a joint press conference with the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the two held talks in London on the last day of Macron's three-day state visit to the UK.

Macron expressed the need to recognize a Palestinian state and initiate this political dynamic for a two-state solution, "which is the only one that conforms with a perspective of peace" he said.

Macron has been increasingly talking about recognizing a Palestinian state, and pushing for it to happen as part of a larger international effort alongside other countries recognizing Israel.

The French leader had been scheduled to jointly host with Saudi Arabia a big conference at the U.N. last month on a two-state solution, but it was postponed after Israel's attacks on Iran

Discussions are under way on rescheduling it, possibly during the U.N. General Assembly in September instead.

A deepening economic crisis makes almost every aspect of life in Cuba challenging for the population; long lines for buses, power outages and shortages are part of everyday life on the island.

But Cuban women will do everything they can to look their best no matter what, and the fashion of extremely long and highly decorated fingernails has become a must for those willing and able to spend the time and money.

While over-the-top nail designs have long been common elsewhere, in Cuba they stand out because most Cubans have little disposable income and procuring the embellishments isn’t easy.

And for those who have mastered the work, whether from online video tutorials or visiting manicurists from other countries, extravagant nails have become an important source of income in Cuba’s limited private economy.

Recently, Cuban manicurist Marisel Dárias Valdés spent nearly six hours applying and decorating the acrylic extensions for a client.

She set up a nail salon at her home in Havana, where she displays the specialized, imported products that are expensive and very difficult to obtain in the city.

There is no official figure on the number of these specialized businesses, but since the pandemic, these small private spaces have flourished, and some have turned it into an art form.

Each client agrees with their manicurist on the cost of the service, which can range from $10 to $40. That’s a lot of money in a country where a monthly state salary is around 5,000 Cuban pesos (about $13), although many families rely on remittances from relatives abroad and state subsidies.

The materials are brought into Cuba from the United States or Panama by the manicurists themselves or relatives, or they are bought from resellers in Cuba.

A small bottle of professional nail polish alone can cost $15.

The class is slightly narrower than that sought by the plaintiffs, who wanted to include parents, but attorneys said that wouldn't make a material difference.

"We took a strong hit, but our spirit is strong. Actually that was the biggest hit, the biggest disaster that the city ever had in nearly 100 years. In one day we lost nine of our people, 200 were injured and more than 2,000, more than 1% of our population are now homeless. They are living at hotels. But we are not looking at yesterday, we're looking at tomorrow, and tomorrow we'll be here, a lot of new buildings. We're going to demolish 20 buildings, but we're going to build them better, stronger. And there will be much more Israeli families running around here, and that will be the best answer to our enemies."

STORYLINE:

Israel began demolishing some of the buildings that were destroyed by Iranian missiles during the 12-day war.

In Bat Yam, just south of Tel Aviv, on the third day of the war, an Iranian missile tore through a building killing nine people, wounding dozens, and damaging or destroying hundreds of home.

"We took a strong hit... that was the biggest hit, the biggest disaster that the city ever had in nearly 100 years. In one day we lost nine of our people, 200 were injured," said Tzvika Brot, the Mayor of Bat Yam.

Israel, which has aimed its missiles at Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program and military leadership, said Iran has fired 550 missiles and over 1000 drones during the war.

31 of which slipped through the country’s sophisticated multi-tiered air defenses and caused havoc in residential suburbs, killing 28 people and wounding over 3000.

Israeli authorities said more than 9,000 people have been displaced from their home.

Over 12 days before a ceasefire was declared, Israel claimed it killed around 30 Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists, while hitting eight nuclear-related facilities and more than 720 military infrastructure sites.

More than 1,000 people were killed, including at least 417 civilians, according to the Washington-based Human Rights Activists group.
