Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he and US President Donald Trump have a common goal to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of excited fans flocked to a Thai zoo on Thursday to celebrate the first birthday of Moo Deng, the adorable baby pygmy hippo that has become a social media sensation.

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo was overrun with Moo Deng's fans on the first of four days of activities marking the hippo's birthday, some flying internationally to see her.

The crowd took pictures of the baby hippo on their cameras or cell phones and sang “Happy birthday” as her birthday cake, made of a variety of fruits and vegetables, was placed near the pond.

Moo Deng soared to stardom shortly after she was born, largely thanks to her keeper Atthapon Nundee who shared adorable pictures and videos of the baby hippo on social media.

Atthapon keeps Moo Deng's fans updated with moments of her squirming as he tries to wash her, biting him as he tries to play, or calmly closing her eyes as he rubs her belly.

Moo Deng, which literally means “bouncy pork” in Thai, is a type of meatball. The name was chosen by fans via a poll on social media.

It matches the names of her other siblings: Moo Toon (stewed pork) and Moo Waan (sweet pork). There is also a common hippo at the zoo named Kha Moo (stewed pork leg).

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo saw spikes of visitors since shortly after Moo Deng was born.

But its director Narongwit Chodchoy says the number of visitors to the zoo has somewhat dropped since the height of Moo Deng’s fame.

Narongwit said the zoo has had about 2,000 visitors during a weekday and around 5,000 during weekends over the past few months, about half the numbers it saw at its peak.

STORYLINE:

A special tribunal indicted Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday by accepting charges of crimes against humanity filed against her in connection with a mass uprising in which hundreds of students were killed last year.

A three-member panel, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, indicted Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on five charges.

Hasina and Khan are being tried in absentia.

The tribunal opened the trial June 5 and asked Hasina to appear. Authorities published newspaper advertisements asking Hasina, who has been in exile in India, and Khan to appear before the tribunal.

Hasina has been in exile since August 5.

Bangladesh’s interim government, headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, sent a formal request to India for Hasina’s extradition but India has not responded. Khan is possibly also in India.

Al-Mamun was arrested and was in the dock Thursday while the judges indicted them. Al-Mamun pleaded guilty and told the tribunal that he would make a statement in favor of the prosecution at a later stage.

The prosecution offered a leaked audio of Hasina and other documents as evidence to the tribunal.

Amir Hossain, a lawyer appointed by the state for Hasina and Khan, appeared at Thursday's hearing and filed a petition to drop their names from the case but the tribunal rejected the plea.

The tribunal later fixed August 3 for the opening statement by the prosecution and August 4 for recording witness statements.

Hasina and her Awami League party previously criticized the tribunal and its prosecution team for connections to political parties, especially the Jamaat-e-Islami party.

The Kremlin insisted Thursday that the resumption of weapons deliveries between the United States and Ukraine and harsher rhetoric from President Donald Trump sides would not stall peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

"We are still waiting for a signal from Kyiv’s representatives as to their desire or unwillingness to enter into a third round of direct negotiations,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

STORYLINE:

A special tribunal indicted Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday by accepting charges of crimes against humanity.

The chargers were filed against her in connection with a mass uprising last year in which the U.N. human rights office estimates up to 1,400 people may have been killed in crackdowns on student-led protest.

A three-member panel indicted Hasina as well as a former Home Minister and former police chief.

Hasina has been in exile in India since 5 August 2024 and is being tried in absentia after India did not respond to an extradition request.

The prosecution offered a leaked audio of Hasina and other documents as evidence to the tribunal.

Filing five charges, the prosecution argued Hasina was directly responsible for ordering all state forces, her Awami League party and its associates to carry out actions leading to mass killings, injuries, targeted violence against women and children, the incineration of bodies and denial of medical treatment to the wounded.

The charges describe Hasina as the “mastermind, conductor, and superior commander” of the atrocities.

Earlier this month the tribunal sentenced Hasina to six months in jail after she was found in contempt of court for allegedly claiming she had a license to kill at least 227 people.
