A union representing thousands of city workers in Philadelphia and the city have reached a deal to end a more than weeklong strike that halted residential curbside trash pickup and affected other services, officials said Wednesday.

Nearly 10,000 blue-collar employees from District Council 33 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees walked off the job July 1, seeking better pay and benefits after negotiations with the city failed.

The tentative agreement gives workers a 3% raise in each of the next three years, far from the union's quest for 5% annual pay hikes. Half of the members will get an additional 2% raise through an added level on the pay scale, Mayor Cherelle Parker said, and most... [truncated]

Christian Horner has been fired as head of the Red Bull team in Formula 1.

He'd been in the job for 20 years and in that time, Red Bull drivers won eight Formula 1 titles and that includes defending champion Max Verstappen.

So why has Horner been replaced so suddenly, halfway through the season?

There was no explanation in a statement from the Red Bull company today though it did thank Horner for his work.

Red Bull's results on the track have dipped season and Verstappen has said often that he's not happy with the car. There's even been speculation he could seek to join a rival team, like Mercedes.

Horner's position has come into question before. He faced a complaint of alleged inappropriate conduct last year involving a team employee.

At the time, Red Bull said that complaint and a subsequent appeal had been investigated and dismissed.

Horner denied wrongdoing and remained in charge of the team.

Laurent Mekies from the sister team Racing Bulls is due to take over as Red Bull Chief Executive.

Chipmaker Nvidia became the first public company to top $4 trillion in value Wednesday after a two-year investor frenzy driven by the artificial intelligence boom.

Nvidia shares rose 2.5%, in early trading Wednesday, topping $164 each. At the beginning of 2023, Nvidia shares were around $14 each. The company's rise has been meteoric.

The Santa Clara, California, company, was founded in 1993. In just over a decade, it was worth $2 trillion. In June 2024, it reached $3 trillion.

The company’s invention of the graphics processor unit, or GPU, in 1999 helped spark the growth of the PC gaming market and redefined computer graphics.

Now Nvidia’s specialized chips are key components that help power different forms of artificial intelligence, including the latest generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Nvidia's innovation powered its rise, rapidly outgrowing Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Google parent Alphabet.

The stock’s movement carries more weight on the S&P 500 than any other company.

The U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria told The Associated Press after meetings in Damascus Wednesday that Syria's central government and the Kurdish administration controlling the country's northeast remain at odds over how to merge their forces together into a single army.

Ambassador Tom Barrack's comments came after he met with Mazloum Abdi, head of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, and Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa in the Syrian capital.

In early March, the new authorities in Damascus signed a landmark deal with the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

Under that deal, the SDF forces would be merged with the new national army.

The deal to be implemented by the end of the year would also bring all border crossings with Iraq and Turkey, airports and oil fields in the northeast under the central government’s control.

Prisons where about 9,000 suspected members of the Islamic State group are also expected to come under government control.

However, the agreement left the details vague, and progress on implementation has been slow.

A major sticking point was whether the SDF would remain as a cohesive unit in the new army - something the Kurds had pushed for - or whether it would be dissolved and its members absorbed into the new military as individuals.

Barrack said that remains "a big issue" between the two parties.

"I would have loved to have sat down with you today and say, this is fantastic - it's all done," he said after Wednesday's meetings, "we're not there."

Barrack said he believed Damascus had "done a great job in presenting...very reasonable options".

He encouraged SDF to consider the terms.

"I hope they will and I hope they'll do it quickly," he added.

Washington, initially skeptical of the Islamist-led former insurgents who took power in Syria after a lightning offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar Assad, has since warmed to the new leaders.

STORYLINE:

Multiple explosions were seen in northern Gaza on Wednesday afternoon as the Israeli military reported that additional troops have joined the forces in the enclave.

The army said in a statement that a division has joined the troops there "and begun operations to encircle Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip."

Five Israeli soldiers were killed earlier in the week in this area.

This came as U.S. President Donald Trump pushed for a ceasefire that might end the war and free dozens of Israeli hostages.

Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the second time in two days at the White House on Tuesday evening, but there was no sign of a breakthrough.

Netanyahu has vowed to continue the 21-month war until Hamas is destroyed, while the militant group has said it will only release the remaining hostages in return for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

The war started after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage.

Most of the hostages have been released in earlier ceasefires.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry, which is under Gaza’s Hamas-run government, doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants. The U.N. and other international organizations see its figures as the most reliable statistics on war casualties.
