STORYLINE:

Provocative avant-garde design duo Viktor & Rolf had a surprising inspiration for their latest collection in Paris on Wednesday - angry birds.

"The first thing that came to mind was the phrase angry birds, we don't know why, and the image of a feather and we started thinking about what can you do with feathers," said Rolf Snoeren talking to the media post-show.

The couture show featured many pieces with feathers, including headpieces and overflowing coats with feathers literally spilling out of them.

The feathers were synthetic and took hours of craftsmanship - and were often neon in colour.

"The feathers are my favourite ingredient because they're not real feathers. They're all handmade in silks and organzas and I think they look very beautiful," said Viktor Horsting after the show.

Other inspirations were the reusing and recycling of garments and some pieces were almost comically inflated, like an oversized puffer jacket and puffer skirts.

Founded in 1993 by fashion artists Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren - the pair discussed their collaboration - saying they work best in a “complete silence.”

"We just sit at a table, we close the door, no music, and we just start talking and sketching," added Horsting.

STORYLINE:

Flowers tucked on its side, a blue truck draped in the Bosnian flag carried coffins with the remains of seven newly identified victims of the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica on their final journey through Bosnia to be buried on the 30th anniversary of Europe's only acknowledged post-World War II genocide.

Dozens of people in the Bosnian town of Visoko paid their respects on a rainy Wednesday morning as the truck departed in a convoy toward the capital Sarajevo, where it stopped on its way to Srebrenica.

Hundreds of people lined the streets, putting flowers on the truck or standing in silence.

“This is teaching the younger generation and not forgetting,” said the top international official in Bosnia, High Representative Christian Schmidt.

"How can you forget such a massacre and a genocide as we have seen?"

More than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed in Srebrenica in July 1995, after Bosnian Serb fighters overran the small eastern town during the final months of the war.

The bodies were dumped in mass graves around Srebrenica and later reburied multiple times to hide evidence of the crimes.

The seven victims who were recently identified were found in different locations over a period of years.

The U.N. General Assembly last year adopted a resolution to commemorate the Srebrenica genocide on the July 11 anniversary.

STORYLINE:

French Air Force deployed over two dozen war planes and several helicopters in Paris on Wednesday for a rehearsal ahead of Bastille Day air parade next week on 14 July.

French President Emmanuel Macron invited Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as a guest of honor for the celebrations.

Indonesian soldiers are going to join the Bastille Day celebrations as well alongside their leader.

The two presidents met in Jakarta at the end of May during Macron’s Southeast Asia trip.

Military cooperation between Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, and France grew in recent years, starting in 2019 when Subianto became defense minister.

Indonesia is also purchasing French Dassault Rafale fighter jets.

Elie Saab, the Lebanese designer long favored on the red carpet, returned to familiar territory on Wednesday, with fall haute couture — and did so unapologetically.

Fashion insiders gathered in Paris among marble columns as models descended a gilded stone staircase to the strains of harpsichord music, setting the tone for a collection steeped in historical romance.

Saab leaned into his signature codes: sumptuous velvets, gowns gathered at the back, and pearl and jewel-adorned chokers. Floral appliqués — another hallmark — appeared throughout, anchoring the collection in the romanticism that has defined the house for decades.

This was a particularly thoughtful collection, evoking Romantic silhouettes from the turn of the 19th century in Europe. The soft draping and historical references gave the show a sense of emotional depth beyond its surface opulence.

The color palette ranged from deep emeralds and sapphires to dusky mauves, offering a moody backdrop for the jewel-encrusted embroidery that shimmered under the lights. Among the standout pieces were gowns with cascading trains and bejeweled details, encasing the body in a kind of luxurious cage.

Though luxury and opulence may be Saab’s well-trodden path, he showed that consistency remains its own form of artistry.

Saab’s couture is less about surprise and more about control — control of silhouette, embellishment, and fantasy. Where other houses have veered into avant-garde or gender-fluid territory this season, Saab stayed rooted in his vision of archetypal femininity, shaped by heritage and craftsmanship.

If the show felt familiar at times, it was also undeniably polished — a standout collection that reminded audiences why Saab’s world of embellished escapism continues to resonate.

Hospital officials said overnight Israeli attacks killed at least 40 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, including 10 from the same family who were sheltering in a tent in Muwasi.

The strikes came as U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a ceasefire that might end the war and free dozens of Israeli hostages.

Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the second time in two days at the White House on Tuesday evening, but there was no sign of a breakthrough.

Netanyahu has vowed to continue the 21-month war until Hamas is destroyed, while the militant group has said it will only release the remaining hostages in return for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

A series of dozens of earthquakes were recorded in the span of hours in Guatemala, leaving two dead when rocks fell on their vehicle, authorities said.

Landslides left several others buried.

In the southern town of Palin, residents were forced to spend the night in makeshift camps following the destruction of homes in the town.

"Our home, from bottom to top, is completely damaged. So, you can't stay there anymore," said Elvia Moratel, a Palin resident who was forced to spend the night outside.

More than 37 earthquakes and aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 5.6 were reported in Guatemala Tuesday afternoon, said Edwin Rodas, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology.

The tremors resulted in the evacuation of buildings, landslides, and minor property damage, officials said, adding they were felt as far away as El Salvador.

The two men killed were traveling in a pickup truck on a local road in the department of Escuintla when the rocks fell from a hillside onto the vehicle, firefighters said.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said at a press conference Tuesday that the main epicenter of the quakes was in the department of Sacatepéquez, with aftershocks in the regions of Escuintla and Guatemala department.
