A zoo in Thailand has held a birthday celebration for its global superstar and internet darling, the adorable baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng, who turned 1 on Thursday.

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo is holding four days of activities for Moo Deng's birthday, starting Thursday.

Children under 12 years-old can enter the zoo, which is about two hours’ drive from the capital Bangkok, for free throughout the period.

A large makeshift cake made of fruits and vegetables was brought into Moo Deng's enclosure, which she shares with her mom Jona.

At first Moo Deng was reticent to eat, preferring to lounge in the cool water. But once her mom began chewing on the various fruits and vegetables, she soon joined in, much to the delight of the large crowd of visitors.

"Moo Deng is my happy pill. And she's my energy pill, my curing pill. She's my vitamin," said Texas resident Thea Chavez, who made a 21-hour round trip just to see the pygmy hippo, her second visit this year.

"Moo Deng has brought a lot of happiness to each and everyone whether it be a heartbreak or somebody recovering from illness," she continued.

Hong Kong police arrested four people linked to a Taiwan-based group under a Beijing-imposed national security law.

Authorities accuse the men, aged 15 to 47, of conspiracy to commit subversion. They face up to life imprisonment if convicted.

Li Kwai-wah, Chief Superintendent of the National Security Department in Hong Kong, said Thursday the four men's roles included designing flags, studying how to solicit assistance from foreign countries, and planning to provide military training to fellow members.

During their search, Li said police found a proposal to urge the U.S. to devise plans to save political prisoners as well as flags that featured designs calling for Hong Kong and Tibet's independence.

Li said the men "endangered national security."

Critics said the crackdown under the national security law imposed in 2020 has stifled the city's freedom of expression, which Beijing promised to keep intact when Hong Kong returned to its rule in 1997.

The Beijing and Hong Kong governments said the law is necessary for the city's stability following protests in 2019.

Nvidia shares rose 2.5%, in early trading Wednesday, topping $164 each. At the beginning of 2023, Nvidia shares were around $14 each. The company's rise has been meteoric.

The Santa Clara, California, company, was founded in 1993. In just over a decade, it was worth $2 trillion. In June 2024, it reached $3 trillion.

The company’s invention of the graphics processor unit, or GPU, in 1999 helped spark the growth of the PC gaming market and redefined computer graphics.

STORYLINE:

An Ingram, Texas carpenter has built a massive cross to be cemented outside Camp Mystic to honor those that lost their lives in the deadly flash floods that swept through central Texas during July 4th weekend.

Billy Hardy lost his entire wood working shop in 2010 to an electrical fire, so when cross bearer, Dan Beazley, reached out about having one made for flood victims, the answer was yes.

"I know what it's like to lose everything", said Hardy who owns Hardy Custom Cabinets.

Hardy has been thinking about the families affected since the flooding started, "I feel horrible for them", he said.

The massive cross was built to last at thirteen feet tall and five foot wide; it will be concreted three feet into the ground.

"I hope it helps the families, I guess to let them know that other people care", he added.

STORYLINE:

A truck decorated with flowers carrying the coffins of seven newly identified victims of the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica arrived in Potocari on Wednesday ahead of their burial.

More than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed in Srebrenica in July 1995, after Bosnian Serb fighters overran the small eastern Bosnian town during the final months of the war.

The bodies were dumped in mass graves around Srebrenica and later reburied multiple times to hide evidence of the crimes.

The seven victims who were recently identified were found in different locations over the past years.

Hatidza Salihovic, a relative of victims due to be buried, said all of her family were killed in the massacre, including her husband, whose remains have still not been found.

Final burial is scheduled for Friday, marking the 30th anniversary of Europe's only acknowledged post-World War II genocide.

On their journey to Potocari hundreds of people lined up in the streets, putting flowers on a truck carrying the bodies or just standing in silence.

The conflict in Bosnia erupted in 1992, when Bosnia's Serbs took up arms in a rebellion against Bosnia's independence from the former Yugoslavia and with an aim to create an own state and eventually unite with neighboring Serbia.

More than 100,000 people were killed and millions displaced before a U.S.-brokered peace agreement was reached in 1995.

Bosnia remains ethnically split while both Bosnia's Serbs and neigboring Serbia still refuse to acknowledge that the massacre in Srebrenica was a genocide despite rulings by two U.N. courts. Scores of Bosnian Serb political and military officials have been convicted and sentenced for genocide.

Newly identified Srebrenica massacre victims are reburied every July 11 at a vast and ever-expanding memorial cemetery outside the eastern town.

Thousands of people are expected to mark the anniversary on Friday at the Potocari memorial complex near Srebrenica.

A union representing thousands of city workers in Philadelphia and the city have reached a deal to end a more than weeklong strike that halted residential curbside trash pickup and affected other services, officials said Wednesday.

Nearly 10,000 blue-collar employees from District Council 33 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees walked off the job July 1, seeking better pay and benefits after negotiations with the city failed.

The tentative agreement gives workers a 3% raise in each of the next three years, far from the union's quest for 5% annual pay hikes. Half of the members will get an additional 2% raise through an added level on the pay scale, Mayor Cherelle Parker said, and most members will qualify by the end of the contract.

Residential trash collection will resume Monday, according to Parker, who asked for “grace” as pools, libraries, recreation centers and other services get back to normal.

District Council 33 is the largest of four major unions representing city workers. Its membership includes 911 dispatchers, trash collectors, water department workers and many others. Police and firefighters weren’t part of the strike.

Parker said that over her four-year term, DC33 workers will have received a total pay bump of 14%, including a 5% one-year hike she gave all four unions after taking office last year.

Many residents seemed to support boosting the pay of DC33 workers, even as trash piled up in neighborhoods. The union says they earn an average $46,000 a year.

13. Wide of Camp Mystic following catastrophic flood

STORYLINE:

An Ingram, Texas carpenter has built a massive cross to be cemented outside Camp Mystic to honor those that lost their lives in the deadly flash floods that swept through central Texas during July 4th weekend.

Billy Hardy lost his entire wood working shop in 2010 to an electrical fire, so when cross bearer, Dan Beazley, reached out about having one made for flood victims, the answer was yes.

"I know what it's like to lose everything", said Hardy who owns Hardy Custom Cabinets.

Hardy has been thinking about the families affected since the flooding started, "I feel horrible for them", he said.

The massive cross was built to last at thirteen feet tall and five foot wide; it will be concreted three feet into the ground.

"I hope it helps the families, I guess to let them know that other people care", he added.
