In the past, Shiite pilgrims from Syria and abroad used to flock to the Sayyida Zeinab shrine outside of Damascus every year to commemorate Ashoura - a solemn day marking the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.

In the days leading up to Ashoura, the streets would be lined with black and red mourning banners and funeral tents.

On the day of the commemoration, black-clad mourners would process through the streets, while in gathering halls known as “husseiniyas,” the faithful would listen and weep as clerics recounted the death of Imam Hussein and his 72 companions in the battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq.

STORYLINE:

Taipei Zoo’s female panda Yuanzai, the first giant panda of her species ever born in Taiwan, celebrated her 12th birthday Sunday morning with dozens of fans filming her eating an ice cake.

The fans raced into the zoo to ensure they got good viewing spots of Yuanzai.

Yuanzai's father was panda Tuantuan and mother panda Yuanyuan. Both were born in China’s Sichuan Province.

China gifted Tuantuan and Yuanyuan to Taiwan in December 2008.

Yuanyuan, the mother who is currently 20 years old, also gave birth to a second female panda named Yuanbao in June 2020.

Yuanyuan’s 21st birthday party is on August 30.

Tuantuan, the father, died at the age of 18 in November 2022.

All the remaining pandas of Taipei Zoo are female pandas.

The zoo currently does not have plans to breed new panda cubs.

STORYLINE:

At least 43 people, including 15 children, died in Kerr County after a storm unleashed nearly a foot (0.3 meters) of rain on Friday and sent floodwaters gushing out of the Guadalupe River through the hilly region known for its century-old summer camps.

Another eight people died in nearby counties.

State officials said 27 girls from Camp Mystic, a riverside Christian camp for girls in Hunt, Texas, still were unaccounted for about 36 hours after the flood.

An 8-year-old girl from Mountain Brook, Alabama, who was at Camp Mystic, and the director of another camp just up the road were among those confirmed dead Saturday.

Gov. Greg Abbott, who toured the camp Saturday with rescue crews, vowed that authorities will work around the clock to find the missing girls and others swept away in the storm that caught many residents, campers and officials by surprise.

Many more are still missing, and authorities said about 850 people had been rescued so far.

The National Weather Service said a flood watch would remain in effect for the Hill Country region through late Saturday night.

STORYLINE:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem visited Camp Mystic, where the search continues for more than two dozen girls who have been missing since the camp was hit by a historic flash flood.

The storm killed at least 37 people across the state, including 14 children.

Some 36 hours after the floods, authorities still have not said how many people were missing beyond 27 children from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along a river in Kerr County where most of the dead were recovered.

The destructive, fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (8 meters) on the Guadalupe River in just 45 minutes before daybreak Friday, washing away homes and vehicles.

The danger was not over as torrential rains continued pounding communities outside San Antonio on Saturday and flash flood warnings and watches remained in effect.

Searchers used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue people stranded in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads.

Gov. Greg Abbott vowed that authorities will be relentless and work around the clock to rescue and recover victims, adding that new areas were being searched as the water recedes.

Authorities were coming under scrutiny over whether the camps and residents in places long vulnerable to flooding received proper warning and whether enough preparations were made.

The hills along the Guadalupe River in central Texas are dotted with century-old youth camps and campgrounds where generations of families have come to swim and enjoy the outdoors.

The area is especially popular around the July Fourth holiday, making it more difficult to know how many are missing.
