STORYLINE:

Thousands of people in Chile participated Saturday in Comic Con 2025, the largest and most anticipated event for fans of the geek world.

One of the most awaited appearances was that of American actor Sean Gunn, who stated he is willing "to work on a Chilean production."

During his time at the event, he interacted with the public by giving autographs and expressed enthusiasm about returning to a country that, according to him, is his brother’s favorite — the well-known director and current CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn.

This is Sean Gunn’s second visit to Chile. The first was a few years ago when he toured Patagonia alongside his brother James and their respective partners, who are now their wives.

Gunn is part of the cast of Superman, the highly anticipated film directed by James Gunn, premiering this July 10. He plays Maxwell Lord, the villain previously portrayed by Pedro Pascal.

The second day of Comic Con Chile gathered over 13,000 people who enjoyed activities such as wrestling, a Star Wars exhibition, a giant replica doll from Squid Game, and various cosplayers.

STORYLINE:

Rescuers scoured flooded riverbanks littered with mangled trees Saturday and turned over rocks in the search for more than two dozen children from a girls’ camp and many others missing after a wall of water blasted down a river in the Texas Hill Country.

The storm killed at least 37 people across the state, including 14 children.

Some 36 hours after the floods, authorities still have not said how many people were missing beyond 27 children from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along a river in Kerr County where most of the dead were recovered.

The destructive fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (8 meters) on the Guadalupe River in just 45 minutes before daybreak Friday, washing away homes and vehicles.

The danger was not over as torrential rains continued pounding communities outside San Antonio on Saturday and flash flood warnings and watches remained in effect.

Searchers used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue people stranded in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vowed that authorities will be relentless in rescuing and recovering victims. “We will find every one of them,” he said.

The number of victims climbed as more rain continued around Austin and a massive search continued in the nearby Hill Country.

At least three people died and 10 others were missing in Travis County, home to the state's capital.

Two people died in Burnet County, where a firefighter was among the missing after he was swept away by floodwaters while responding to a rescue, the county Emergency Management Coordinator Derek Marchio said.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said the bodies of 32 people had been recovered so far in the devastated Hill Country: 18 adults and 14 children.

STORYLINE:

A protest by hundreds against gentrification and mass tourism that began peacefully Friday in Mexico City neighborhoods popular with tourists turned violent when a small number of people began smashing storefronts and harassing foreigners.

Masked protesters smashed through the windows and looted high-end businesses in the touristic areas of Condesa and Roma, and screamed at tourists in the area.

Graffiti on glass shattered glass being smashed through with rocks read: "get out of Mexico."

Protesters held signs reading "gringos, stop stealing our home" and demanding local legislation to better regulate tourism levels and stricter housing laws.

Marchers then continued on to protest outside the U.S. Embassy and chanted inside the city’s metro system.

Police reinforcements gathered outside the embassy building as police sirens rang out in the city center Friday evening.

It marked a violent end to a more peaceful march throughout the day directed against masses of mostly American tourists who have flooded into Mexico's capital in recent years.

Tension had been mounting in the city since U.S. "digital nomads" flocked to Mexico City in 2020, many to escape coronavirus lockdowns in the U.S. or to take advantage of cheaper rent prices in the Latin American city.

Since then, rents have soared and locals have increasingly gotten pushed out of their neighborhoods, particularly areas like Condesa and Roma, lush areas packed with coffee shops and restaurants.

The Mexico City protest follows others in European cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and Rome against mass tourism.

Thousands of revellers took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday to participate in this year's Gay Pride parade.

Dressed in flamboyant costumes and waving flags and banners, they marched from Atocha Station and travelled along Paseo del Prado, Cibeles Square and ended in Plaza de Colon, where a stage welcomed them with music and the reading of a manifesto.

Considered Europe's largest Pride event, Madrid Orgullo, as it's locally known, features a week of parties, concerts and community events in and around the capital's Chueca neighbourhood, leading to a huge parade, with participants from all around the world.

Rocio Piquet, a 19 year old dancer, said: "Pride is a celebration where, like many people, we all stand up for what we truly like and we are free to walk down the street dressed however we want."

The name Julio César Chávez in Culiacan is like saying Diego Maradona in Argentina.

Chávez is the city’s idol and source of pride, known simply as "The Legend.”

Syrian Civil Defense teams continued efforts on Saturday to contain wildfires that are sweeping through the Turkmen Mountains and other parts of Latakia’s countryside.

Turkish firefighters worked with Syrian colleagues on Saturday to battle wildfires in Syria’s Latakia region, while also tackling a blaze on the Turkish side of the border.

A Syrian Civil Defense officer expressed concerns that the presence of unexploded ordnance from the country’s past conflicts might be contributing to the spread of wildfires in some areas.

“The wind speed caused the fires to spread and expand, leading to the ignition of vegetation cover. Sadly, the fires also reached civilians’ homes and agricultural lands,” said Ahmad Yaziji, a Syrian civil Defense officer.

The Syrian Civil Defense is a team of first responders operating in Syria - funded by western governments.

Raed Al Saleh, the Syrian minister of emergency and disaster management, said two firefighting helicopters, as well as fire trucks and water support vehicles, had arrived from Turkey to help beat back flames in Syria’s northwest border region.

“Although the intervention was scheduled for yesterday evening, sudden wildfires in Turkey led to a delay in the arrival of the participating teams until this morning,” he posted on X.

Hundreds of demonstrators, including relatives of the hostages who are still in captivity in Gaza, called on the Israeli government to implement a ceasefire deal proposed by the United States and to bring their loved ones back.

Gathering in Tel Aviv on Saturday, the protesters carried banners reading "Bring them home now" and demanded an end to the conflict.

Hamas said earlier on Friday it has given a "positive" response to the latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza but said further talks were needed on implementation.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.

Hamas has sought guarantees that the initial truce would lead to a total end to the war and withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

President Donald Trump has pushed for an agreement and will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday to discuss a deal.

Previous negotiations have stalled over Hamas demands of guarantees that further negotiations would lead to the war’s end, while Netanyahu has insisted Israel would resume fighting to ensure the militant group's destruction.

The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage. About 50 of them still in captivity in Gaza.

STORYLINE:

Rescuers were searching Saturday for more than two dozen children from a girls' camp and many others still missing after a wall of water rushed down a river in the Texas Hill Country during a powerful storm that killed at least 27 people, officials said. Among the dead were nine children.

The destructive fast-moving waters along the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet (8 meters) in just 45 minutes before dawn Friday, washing away homes and vehicles. The danger was not over as torrential rains continued pounding communities outside San Antonio on Saturday and flash flood warnings and watches remained in effect for parts of central Texas.

Some 27 people remained missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the river, said Dalton Rice, Kerrville's city manager. An unknown number of people at other locations were still unaccounted for, he said Saturday.

Searchers used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue stranded people in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads. The total number of missing was not known, according to the city manager, who said he didn't want to give an estimate.

The flooding in the middle of the night on the Fourth of July holiday caught many residents, campers and officials by surprise. The Texas Hill Country, which sits northwest of San Antonio, is a popular destination for camping and swimming, especially around the summertime holiday.
