STORYLINE:

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are hoping that ongoing negotiations to end the war in Gaza will stop the grinding conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people.

Their comments came as U.S.-led ceasefire efforts aimed at halting a nearly 21-month war appear to be gaining momentum. Hamas gave a “positive” response late Friday to the latest U.S. proposal for a 60-day truce but said further talks were needed on implementation.

Hamas has been seeking guarantees that the initial truce would lead to a total end to the 21-month war and withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. President Donald Trump has been pushing for an agreement and is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next week to discuss a deal.

The comments of people in the central city of Deir al-Balah came as Israeli airstrikes killed 14 people in the Gaza Strip and while 10 other Palestinians were killed seeking food in the embattled enclave, hospital officials in Gaza told the Associated Press on Saturday.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of Shiite Muslims in Karachi commemorated on Saturday the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims around the world, particularly Shiite Muslims, observe Muharam, the first month of the Islamic calendar, mourning the martyrdom of Hussain.

The mourners, mostly wearing black clothes, beat their chests in a show of grief.

They petted and touched a horse, symbolising Zuljinnah, the horse on which Imam Hussain rode in the battle of Karbala.

The mourners also denounced Israel for its military attacks in Gaza and Iran and burned flags of Israel and the United States.

They also held placards in support of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

More than 5,000 police personnel and law enforcement agencies have been deployed to provide security for the procession which stretched for many kilometers.

Cries of “It is warm!” rang out across the Seine on Saturday morning as Parisians jumped into the river — legally — for the first time in more than 100 years.

Public swimming was allowed in designated areas of the Seine, including two newly built wooden decks near the Eiffel Tower and the Île Saint-Louis in central Paris. Before sunrise, a municipal officer skimmed away the last few patches of algae with a fishnet. Soon after, a line of eager Parisians formed, towels in hand, waiting for their chance to jump in.

Woos and cries of joy echoed across the riverbanks as the first swimmers entered the emerald-green water.

Every swimmer wore a bright yellow lifebuoy tied around their waist, part of strict safety measures enforced by a dozen lifeguards in high-visibility vests. The current was weak, just enough to tug gently at their limbs — a reminder that this is still a living, urban river.

The return to swimming follows a 1.4 billion euro ($1.5 billion) cleanup project tied to last year’s Olympics. Officials now say the Seine meets European water quality standards on most days. Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who already took a dip last year, was there Saturday morning, holding up a transparent bottle filled with river water as a show of confidence.

Environmental authorities confirmed bacteria levels were well below official thresholds.

Swimming in the Seine had been illegal since 1923, with a few exceptions, due to pollution and risks posed by river navigation. Taking a dip outside bathing areas is still banned for safety reasons.

A massive Lego man called Dada welcomed visitors to the new Legoland resort in Shanghai, China.

The resort, which opened on Saturday, is the first in China and one of the largest in the world.

Built with 85 million Lego bricks, it was developed by Merlin Entertainments and the LEGO Group in partnership with the Shanghai government.

The park features replicas of real world sights like Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. Tickets range from US$44 to US$84.

“If you're a fan of Lego, and there are many of them throughout the world and indeed a growing number of fans also in the Chinese market, this is the clubhouse of the brand, the ultimate experience,” said John Jakobsen, Merlin Entertainment’s strategic chief.

About 85 million Lego bricks are used in this park to create 3,000 individual Lego models, Jakobsen said.

“We have themed areas inside the park that are based on Chinese IP,” he added.

Among the main attractions in the resort is Miniland, which replicates well-known sights from across the world using Lego bricks.

It features sights from across China like Beijing's Temple of Heaven and Shanghai's the Bund waterfront.

There's also a boat tour through a historical Chinese water town built with Lego bricks.

Friends, family and teammates arrived for the funerals of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church in Portugal on Saturday.

Jota, 28, and his brother, 25, were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames.

Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family, Spanish government officials said.

Jota and his parents both have homes in Gondomar, where he started his playing career as a child. Gondomar is a working-class town next to Porto, where Jota was born.

Jota’s death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year.

Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tyre.

Jota's brother Silva played for Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.

Agonized Israeli hostage families urged U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday to secure a ceasefire deal that will ensure the release of their loved ones.

In Tel Aviv, families of the hostages remaining in Gaza and former hostages released from Gaza gathered outside the U.S. embassy branch office to call for an immediate deal.

There are 50 remaining hostages inside Gaza, less than half of whom are said to be alive.

Ruby Chen, the father of hostage Itay Chen, whose remains are held captive in Gaza, called on Trump to make sure his son's body returns home.

"Today, as Americans across the country celebrate the 4th of July, a day that honors our freedom and founding ideals, we, an American family with a loved one, my son Itay, still held hostage in Gaza, cannot celebrate," he said.

"I appeal to President Trump to make my family whole again."

Keith Siegel, a former hostage, said of the hostages: "Only a comprehensive deal can bring all of them home. President Trump, you are the only one who can do it."

Trump said Thursday that Israel had agreed on terms for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen.

Hamas’ response emphasized its demand that the truce lead to an end to the war.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo met with swimmers at the Seine Saturday morning as the river reopened for swimming for the first time in a century.

The long-polluted waterway is finally opening up as a summertime swim spot following a 1.4 billion euro ($1.5 billion) clean-up project that made it suitable for Olympic competitions last year.

Three new swimming sites on the Paris riverbank will open on Saturday — one close to Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, another near the Eiffel Tower and a third in eastern Paris.

Swimming in the Seine has been illegal since 1923, with a few exceptions, due to pollution and risks posed by river navigation. Taking a dip outside bathing areas is still banned for safety reasons.

The Seine was one of the stars of the Paris Olympics in 2024, whether as the scene of the ambitious opening ceremony or the triathlon and marathon swimming competitions. That didn't go without challenging hurdles such as rainfall increasing levels of bacteria, which postponed some competitions.

This city's authorities have given the green light for the public opening, with water quality results consistently in line with European regulations.

Some Parisians also have shown skepticism toward the idea of swimming in the Seine. The feeling is often reinforced by the water's murky color, floating litter and multiple tourist boats in some places.

Until the end of August, swimming sites will be open for free at scheduled times to anyone with a minimum age of 10 or 14 years, depending on the location. Lifeguards will keep a watchful eye on those first dips.

"We are looking for a husband and father. He has been missing already for a year which will be on 6th of July. He disappeared in the Kharkiv direction, in the Lypetsk direction, near the settlement of Hlyboke. We have had no news for a year. As far as we know, about 300 guys have disappeared. These are only those whose relatives we found. None of them are registered as alive, dead, or captured. It is simply as if these guys did not exist, as if they disappeared somewhere. We go on exchanges, Sofiyka (daughter) is here for the first time, with the hope that at least someone will say, at least there will be some news that he is alive, that he is in captivity. STORYLINE:

A group of prisoners of war detained in Russia returned to Ukraine Friday as part of the ongoing exchanges negotiated between the two countries during talks in Istanbul last month, according to the body that oversees the exchanges.

In a post on the messaging app Telegram, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said the group who were classified as “wounded and seriously ill” were returned from captivity.

It did not say how many people were released but said the youngest was 20 and the oldest 59 adding that many had been held since 2022.

Dozens of relatives of Ukrainian POWs and missing soldiers came to a hospital in Kyiv to welcome some of the exchanged servicemen.

Among them was Liubov Demenkova with her 9-year-old daughter Sofiyka. She told The Associated Press her husband Ihor Demenkov went missing in July last year and has not received any information about him since.

"He was mobilized on Sofiyka's birthday," she said. "Now she doesn't really like this holiday, she doesn't like to celebrate it, because it is associated with sad events."
