Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama attended a "long life prayer" offered to him by the Central Tibetan Administration on behalf of the Tibetan people, a day ahead of his 90th birthday.

The ceremony took place in Tsuglagkhang temple in the hill town of Dharamshala, where the spiritual leader lives.

The Dalai Lama has often called himself a simple monk, but millions of his Tibetan Buddhist followers have worshipped him for decades as a near deity.

They also see him as the face of Tibet’s aspirations for greater autonomy, but have for years wrestled with the idea that he might be the last person to hold the role.

Family and friends of Portugal and Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother will gather for their funeral at a small church in his home town of Gondomar later on Saturday.

The Portuguese football players were killed in a car crash in Spain on Thursday.

Jota and his brother André Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight and burst into flames.

Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family.

China on Friday imposed anti-dumping duties on European brandy, most notably cognac produced in France, as trade tensions between Beijing and United States allies continue to rise.

Chinese authorities agreed to exempt some major cognac makers on condition they maintain their prices above minimum levels.

The announcement came during a European visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi aimed at ironing out trade differences.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the agreement is vital to “bringing the investigation into cognac and armagnac to a close”.

Pope Leo XIV will resume the papal tradition of taking a summer break outside Rome, in Castel Gandolfo where locals and faithful anxiously await his arrival.

Leo will transfer to the papal retreat of Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, from July 6-20 for a period of rest and again for a few days over the Catholic Assumption feast day in August, the Vatican said.

STORYLINE:

There will be a successor after his death, he announced, and the Dalai Lama’s office will lead the search and recognize a successor in accordance with past tradition.

It could also irk China, which insists that it alone has the authority to approve the next religious leader, a move seen as Beijing's efforts to strengthen its control over Tibet's overwhelmingly Buddhist population.

Tibetans in exile say they were effectively independent for centuries, and accuse China of trying to wipe out Tibet’s Buddhist culture and language, and encouraging Chinese to move there from other parts of the country.

STORYLINE:

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama attended a "long life prayer" offered to him by the Central Tibetan Administration on behalf of the Tibetan people to mark his 90th birthday.

There will be a successor after his death, he announced, and the Dalai Lama’s office will lead the search and recognize a successor in accordance with past tradition.

The decision is consequential for most Tibetans, who have struggled for decades to keep their identity alive — in Tibet or outside in exile — and rallied behind the Dalai Lama for that cause.

It could also irk China, which insists that it alone has the authority to approve the next religious leader, a move seen as Beijing's efforts to strengthen its control over Tibet's overwhelmingly Buddhist population.

Tibetans in exile say they were effectively independent for centuries, and accuse China of trying to wipe out Tibet’s Buddhist culture and language, and encouraging Chinese to move there from other parts of the country.

Beijing insists Tibet is a part of China.
