About 40% of flights were cancelled Friday at all Paris airports due to a strike by French air traffic controllers seeking better working conditions.

Tens of thousands of passengers were left rearranging plans at the height of the summer travel season.

Disruptions started hitting airports around France on Thursday and intensified Friday.

The national civil aviation authority asked airlines to cancel 40 percent of flights Friday at Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Beauvais airports serving Paris, half of flights in Nice and 30 percent of flights in Marseille, Lyon and some other cities.

Despite the preventive cancelations, the authority warned in a statement that ″disruptions and long delays are to be expected at all French airports.”

Ryanair was among airlines that announced widespread disruptions, saying in a statement it cancelled more than 400 flights affecting 70,000 passengers.

The company said the strike affects all its flights over French airspace, as well as traffic in and out of French airports, and urged the European Union to reform air traffic rules.

One of the two unions leading the strike, UNSA-ICNA, said in a statement there are not enough employees to handle surging air travel and that inflation is eating away at salaries.

The unions also are protesting new reform measures aiming to more tightly monitor their work, prompted by a near-collision at the Bordeaux airport.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot called the union demands — and their decision to strike just as French schools close for the summer and many families head on vacation — ″unacceptable.″

"Thousands of Oasis fans, as you can see, are gathering here in Cardiff where, very soon, in a couple of hours time, the band will take to the stage for its first performance in 16 years. To say this is a much anticipated comeback is a bit of an understatement. When Oasis announced in August of last year that they were getting back together for a UK, Ireland and then world tour, tickets sold out within hours and there were many, many stories of people waiting in queues up to a million people long, and of having to pay inflated prices at the last minute just for the chance to catch one of these shows. A lot of the people here are perhaps in their 40s and 50s, and they talk about being Oasis fans since they were teenagers and what the band meant to them back in the 90s. And then there are also a lot of younger fans who maybe their parents grew up with Oasis and they, as a result, have learned to love the music too. There are singalongs already in the street to Oasis hits like Champagne Supernova and Half a World Away. There's a lot of quite good-natured beer drinking going on. The merch is flying off the shelves and it's just a very, very excited atmosphere."

STORYLINE:

Palestinian Americans who own lands and homes in villages in the central Israeli-occupied West Bank protested on Friday against the establishment of settler outposts they say have sprung up nearby.

The mayor of Sinjil, Moataz Tawafsha, said that extremist Israeli settlers related to the “Hilltop Youth” group had erected four outposts (rustic farms where often radical settlers live) nearby the village and have tried in recent weeks to establish two more.

The “hilltop youth,” is an extremist movement of Israeli settlers who occupy West Bank hilltops and have been accused of attacking Palestinians and their property.

Palestinian protesters set fires in a field nearby one of the outposts, a small wooden structure atop a hill overlooking the villages.

Footage taken by an AP cameraman showed over twenty settlers also on the scene with Israeli soldiers.

They appeared to be clustering around Palestinian cars.

No one was injured in the tense encounter.

Thousands attended a funeral on Friday in Homa Bay for Kenyan blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.

Singing and dancing took place as mourners gathered.

"I have sent off my son in peace, may he rest in peace," said Albert Ojwang's father, Meshak Ojwang.

Protests took place after Ojwang's death, where clashes with police were frequent and 22-year-old Boniface Kariuki was shot and killed by a police officer.

Ojwang was found dead while in custody at the Central Police Station after being arrested on June 6 in western Kenya, for what police called publishing “false information” about a top police official on social media.

Police attributed his death to him “hitting his head against the cell wall,” but a pathology report refuted the police account.

Kenya has a history of police brutality, and President William Ruto previously vowed to end it, along with extrajudicial killings.

Last year, several activists and protesters were abducted and killed by Kenyan police during protests against tax hikes. The demonstrations led to calls for Ruto's removal.

Family and friends of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother gathered at a chapel where their bodies were brought for a wake on Friday, a day after the Portuguese soccer players were killed in a car crash.

The war between Israel and Hamas began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said the number of Palestinians killed in the territory has passed 57,000.
