STORYLINE:

Russia launched 550 drones and missiles across Ukraine overnight in the largest aerial assault since the war began.

The capital Kyiv was the primary target.

Authorities said one person was killed and at least 26 people, including a child, were injured.

Ukrainian air defenses shot down 270 targets and another 208 targets were lost from radar and presumed jammed, but dozens still struck or caused damage across the city.

Fires and destruction were reported in at least five of Kyiv's 10 districts.

The attack came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump held a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said later of Putin that “I don’t think he’s looking to stop” the war.

STORYLINE:

Family and friends of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother gathered on Friday at a church in Portugal where their bodies had been brought for a wake after the Portuguese soccer players were killed in a car crash in Spain.

Some hugged and wept before entering the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme, where the funeral for the siblings is planned for Saturday.

Mourners left flowers and candles next to a tree outside the chapel were visitation was held.

The brothers' parents were in attendance, as well as Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also visited to pay his respects.

Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames.

Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family, Spanish government officials said.

Jota and his parents both have homes in Gondomar, where he started his playing career as a child. Gondomar is a working-class town next to Porto, where Jota was born.

Jota’s death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year.

Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have caused by a blown tire.

Jota's brother Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.

The loss was felt sharply in his hometown, especially at his first soccer club, where Jota started playing at age 9.

Heading to England via boat Jota and his brother were driving overnight to catch a boat from Santander, on Spain’s northern coast, to go to England to rejoin Liverpool, when they crashed, according to Portuguese media.

Spanish police have yet to say which brother was driving at the time of the accident.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port of Spain on Thursday to a warm welcome from the large East Indian community in the Caribbean nation.

Late at night, he participated in a community engagement event at the National Velodrome, where several local artists and descendants from India performed in a vibrant display of cultural integration between the Caribbean and Hindu descendants on the island.

It is Modi’s first official visit to the diverse, twin-island Caribbean nation.

More than 35% of its 1.4 million inhabitants are East Indian, descendants of indentured workers brought from India during the colonial era.

Prime Minister announced that Overseas Citizenship of India cards will now be given to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago.

In his speech, the Prime Minister encouraged people to strengthen the ties with India.

Modi's day trip to Trinidad and Tobago is expected to boost investments in energy, health, security, and other sectors.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who is herself a descendant of India, bestowed Prime Minister Modi with the country’s highest honor, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

AP video shot from a helicopter Friday showed the sprawling center and surrounding land.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis says the facility will have a capacity of about 3,000 detainees when fully operational.

The center was built in eight days and features more than 200 security cameras, 28,000-plus feet of barbed wire and 400 security personnel. And the area features alligators, pythons and other dangerous wildlife.

Environmentalists and human rights advocates criticize the project, citing harm to wildlife and inhumane conditions. The state claims the location, with its remote wetlands and natural barriers, is secure and efficient.

STORYLINE:

Israeli airstrikes killed 15 Palestinians in Gaza early on Friday, while another 20 people died in various locations while trying to get aid, according to Nasser Hospital in Gaza.

Three of those killed died while attempting to get aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the newly created American organization backed by Israel to feed the Gaza Strip’s population.

Another 17 were killed while waiting for an aid truck to go by in Khan Younis.

Family members bid their loved ones a tear-filled emotional goodbye as mourners gathered around the wrapped bodies.

Funeral prayers were held for the deceased, before the bodies were taken away for burial.

"Enough injustice, enough death, enough genocide. You killed us and burned our hearts over our children while you are watching," said one woman.

The latest killings took place as efforts to halt the 21-month war appeared to be moving forward.

Hamas said Friday that it was holding discussions with leaders of other Palestinian factions to discuss a ceasefire proposal presented to it by Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

Trump said Tuesday that Israel had agreed on terms for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen.

Hamas will give its final response to mediators after the discussions have concluded, the statement said.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said the number of Palestinians killed in the territory has passed 57,000. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count, but says more than half of the dead are women and children.

The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages.

According to Palestinian witnesses and Gaza’s Health Ministry, several hundred people have been killed or wounded by Israeli troops when trying to reach the aid sites since they opened in May.

The military has repeatedly said it’s fired only warning shots, denies deliberately firing towards civilians, and says it’s looking into reports of civilian harm.
